Can confirm, would never wear this ever.

Excellent price. I would wear this in the cold mountains while trekking. It packs so light and tight so you can pack it. Patagonia trace their down all the way so that there is no live plucking or cruelty to geese. This is geese. 850 if I remember right. The higher the number does not indicate warmth or thickness, the higher indicates better compression. This one is not for warmth on its own. It needs an outer shell and a fleece too. But this is an amazing price for a pack able ethical down. Only morons buy down for city life.

    • Thanks for the tip on warmth. Was going to buy it, but sounds like it's too light as a stand-alone jacket for where I'm going (Quebec winter).

You probably do want this for Quebec in winter (other than it being hideous), you layer your clothing, so you will wear some woolen/polyester thermals, a shirt, a jumper/fleece/down jacket (in combinations depending on how cold), and then a windbreaker unless it is an unseasonably warm and windless day, or you go for a big jacket that is also a windbreaker.

Just remember, it's better to take off a middle layer like this jacket which will pack into a small area (if not into one of its own pockets) and put your outer layer back on, than to find yourself too hot in a big winter jacket but way too cold without it.

      • Quebec winter? Canada Goose is your friend. It's expensive as hell, but wow you will never look back. Also what nmartin84 said ^

Source: spent a good part of January in Montreal (-30 celsius).

    • Meh horses for courses. I find my down jacket really convenient for the colder nights in melbourne.

PS - The number indicates the loft or fill power of the down being used. The higher the loft the less of the down you need to use to provide the same level of insulation. So it may correlate to a lighter jacket and better compression than a jacket that has the same R value but is filled with lower quality down.

However don't assume that this jacket will be more compressible than a uniqlo jacket, for example, just because the down in the latter has a lower fill power. The uniqlos won't be made to be as warm and therefore will still be more compressible. To compare jackets (or doonas for that matter) you need to look both at fill power and warmth (as measured in "blankets" or ideally the R value).

  • bah, I just bought two for $129 couple days ago, and also COTD put up 50% off sale for something else I bought together! not happy!

  • Anyone smell a fake here? Doubt Patagonia would discount by this much.

You may be right as I've never seen it this reduced and as an underlay it doesn't need to be fashionable. It is expensive to make. And they are the only maker who ethically trace. I've only ever seen 30% off 280 via surf dive ski with a coupon. But it looks like the proper colour and style of last season. If a fake, if is an exact copy.

      • Nah it should be genuine. It's last season's, and they're selling it at near cost price I'm guessing.

        • I don't buy it. Patagonia is very selective about where they sell their stuff. I mean it is in the founder's book that they afford selling at places such as this.

        • Sorry, for my benefit having purchased one, how would I tell please?

@andrewm71: I can't help. I wouldn't worry if it looks like the pictures. The pictures are the right colours, fit (big around upper arms), and detailing (on zippers etc). a size medium will roll tight into a sphere of maybe 15cm by 10cm diameter. I don't know anything about forgeries though, but this looks exact. Tags should be attached presumably. It will feel incredibly light and not warm until you later it with other things. As I understand, the down in it is the superfine down closest to the skin on the geese, not the outer layers of the geese.

        • @grasstown: Thanks for giving me a heads up on what to look for.

Also don't worry if it has a very slight yuk feather smell if you put your nose really close to it. Though maybe these were reduced as they weren't stored in optimal dry conditions?
