Magshop Boxing Day Special - $59.95/Year APC Magazine Subscription

190

Boxing day sale from Magshop.com.au — up to 50% off some of the magazine subscriptions. For example,

  • Money — 11 issues for $39.95
  • APC — 12 issues for $59.95

Well this day and age I guess less people are reading the dead tree version of publications, but it is still quite a lot cheaper when I was their subscriber a few years ago.

  • Is APC any good these days? I used to subscribe few years ago, but it was going down hill.

  • +2

I fondly remember my metre-high stack of APC mags from the early 90s. They fueled my interest in computer hardware and kept me on the upgrade treadmill which ate a lot of my income.

Funnily enough I now subscribe to Money. It's nothing groundbreaking, a bit commercial, but a good starting point for staying informed about personal finance issues and counterweight to the spend-spend-spend messages everyone's bombarded with.

  • Pc magazines are a total waste of time now. You can get better, longer and more detailed reviews for free online, and more up to date news online. Alot of PC magazines also need to employ proofreaders and editors who can actually read and write english. APC is not so bad, but magazines like Atomic are woeful.

    • Indeed. I have not subscribed to APC for ~2 years and I have been a subscriber for like 10 years prior to that. I guess it depends. If you want the latest news, there is no place like finding it on the interweb.

APC however has some good write ups that's relevant to the Australians (a lot of good sites online are US-centric). I just don't have time to read them :P

      • I find APC still stand head and shoulders above the rest of IT mags in Aus.

I still subscribed for last 10 years or so. Sure you can find news and any relevant stuff more up-to-dated from Net, but can you do this with the computer+Net:

        • read an unbiased review for a test with half dozen of computer/laptops/mobo/any similar devices - show me any website that can do that every month.
        • take it for a long journey on train, plane without break your back carry your laptop battery
        • take it to a sunny backyard/beach without worry it get dirt or wet
        • take it to a dunny!

One thing I wish APC can do is to remove the accompany CD/DVD. They should provide as a bundle option - and charge extra postage accordingly.

  • Cool thanks. Just subscribed to Money :)

  • I don't know if the subscription to Money is that good a price - I subscribed to it back in April for $42.70 for 12 issues.

  • Does anyone know any sites to get Aussie magazines on student discounts? I remember they used to advertised in the uni diaries etc, and the prices seemed quite good… just realised that this would be a great Christmas present for my dad (we're not celebrating Christmas till mid Jan, so I have time). He's into some 4x4 magazine, just have to figure out which one…

    • studentmagazines.com.au

      • both are still cheaper here but i guess it's good for when it finishes

I think.. I subscribed to money magazine for 42.$$

  • Sometimes it is worth getting the magazines just for the DVD's that come with. I subscribe to PC User magazine, and the free software that comes with it is excellent. I get all of my burning software, security software etc as well as something to read.

  • I prefer PC Authority

  • Even though information is so easily accessible on the Internet sometimes there's so much you miss important articles or think "I'll read it later".

Haven't subscribed to a PC mag in maybe 7 years now but if you put one in front of me I will read it cover to cover no problem. I enjoyed reading PC Authority and APC is also good, many moons ago I was subscribed to PC World and PC User which wasn't bad either.

There's still plenty of value in these magazines and they do have interesting content. You can skip the overly bias nature of some tech blogs and just get decent information from them.

Just my two cents.. won't subscribe to either but a good deal nonetheless.
