HELP // Best Compact Camera ($600 - $700)

Hi guys!!

Having been using my iPhone 5S to take photos for the past 2 years, ive now thought it would be a good idea to invest in a camera. (FINALLY!)

Not looking for any special functions in particular but just wanted to have your thoughts on the best compact camera i could get that does the job.

Trying to stay away from a DSLR mainly because of the size, as i was hoping to carry it around on a day-to-day basis, taking photos of food, scenery and just anything and everything!

Also, on a little side note
Does anyone have any personal experience with any of the olympus camera's?
Ive done my research and the one I've been looking at is the olympus om-d e-m10.

However im, open to any suggestions :)

My budget is not really fixed but i was hoping it wouldn't exceed the $600-700 range.

Thanks! and looking forward to your ideas

    Sony RX100.

    • "A Powerhouse Pocketable Camera"

      i like it :D

    • I second this.

  • e-m10 is not pocketable. You would want one that has a fixed lens that can retract into the body

  • Panasonic lx100

  • Get Pana GM1 or GM5 for something as small as the SONY RX100, but with interchangeable lens and hotshoe.

Think of all the fast primes m43 has to offer.

  • Does anyone have any experience with buying electronics from Kogan?
Looking at the price of the Sony RX100, its listed as $409, compared to prices around the $670 mark on dicksmith, JB-hifi etc.

    • Kogan's are grey imports, meaning that you cannot claim GST back via TRS if that was a plan. Otherwise that's probably the only main difference. Also there's 4 versions of the RX100 if you didn't know so that may be a reason for the price difference!

You could probably wait for a good deal on Aus stock if you can wait a bit.

      • I've had people say some of their stock may be refurbished products, but they do have warranty on their products which makes it okay i guess?

  • I think your original idea of a om-d e-m10 isn't bad, especially now the new one has been announced, might be able to find a good deal on it. And then gives you thew option to look at other lenses if you want to get more serious. However, not nearly as pocketable and portable as the RX100.

If you are going to get an RX100, I'd definitely be looking at the Mark 3, if it can match your budget. Has a much better lens than the Mk1 & 2, and has pop-up viewfinder that it nice.

So, RX100 mk3 vs Em-10 Pros and cons.

    RX100 Pros
    - Smaller, truly pocketable
    - Much better video
    - Probably similarish image quality compared to Em10 kit lens

    EM10 Pros
    - Much more options and better image quality by getting other lenses
    - Better ergonomics (more fun to use for extended periods)

    Conclusion:
Go the RX100 Mk3 is pocketable is important, and/or you never plan to get extra lenses.
Go the EM10 is you don't care about smallest possible size, but would like to get specialty lenses (telephoto, super wide, bright, macro, etc)

(doorknob also suggested the GM5, which I think is an excellent choice, but more expensive that your budget.)

    • thanks for the overview!

based on your conclusion i would lean towards the RX100 Mk3, however… I've now been thinking to upgrade to the new iPhone 6s plus.
the new camera seems to be a crowd pleaser and it would be the most convenience considering i always carry my phone around with me anyway.
