Philips Hue Starter & LivingColors Iris for $309.00 (Free Aus shipping) at Simply-LEDs.com.au

110

For those looking at the Smart LEDs/bulbs this deal includes:
1x Philips Hue starter pack includes 3x Hue bulbs, the bridge, ethernet cable, power adapter
1x LivingColors Iris lamp in black

A decent priced bundle considering the cheapest I can find the Hue Starter kit by itself goes for $249 (w/o Shipping) from Kogan.

The Hue bulbs are LED smart bulbs that allow you to use an app to change their colour and intensity.

Note: Max 600 lumens means this may not be a suitable bulb replacement for high ceilings. I'm waiting out for another sale on LIFX bulbs for the extra lumens.

EDIT 1
Potential uses for a smart bulb:
- Gentle light alarm to create an artificial dawn as a wake up alarm
- Turn lights off in bed via phone app (no more rock-paper-scissors with the partner on who has to get up and flick the switch)
- Mood lighting (or for the ultimate trippy experience)
- Disco lighting for parties at home with friends (or just by yourself) with lighting colour and pulses synced to music
- Lighting automation to turn on/off periodically for when you're on holiday and can't/don't want a house-sitter
- Alert notification (screw it into a desk lamp and use IFTTT for the light to change to a certain colour when you get an OzB PM)

100 bucks for a light bulb.

    • A smartbulb*

    • I updated the description to try and point out the uses that make an LED smart bulb different to your everyday lightbulb. Hope that helps with the comparison.

  • You can get this kit at Apple store and online for $289.95

    http://www.apple.com/au_smb_4860/shop/product/HA779X/A/phili…

    • @flowies the deal I posted is the Starter Kit + Iris lamp for $309, your apple link is just the Starter Kit for $289.95. Pay $20 more and you get the Iris Lamp too. The only Australian site I can find selling the Iris is also Simply-LEDs and they sell it separately for $199.

@fuzcatt My bad! jumping the gun, sorry mate

I've been wanting to buy a "smartbulb" for a while now, it seems the biggest flaw from most of these bulbs is the shitty software with the phone app.

Also, shame this is just the screw fitting, I have the bayonet :-(

@kaneissik There are a lot of 3rd party apps out there for the philips gear, I am using lightswitch on iphone which is great.

      • +1

Yeah, I've heard a lot of good about some 3rd party apps, it's just unfortunate that the standard software sucks.

Ah bayonet fitting… the other reason I'm holding out for LIFX to go on sale…
Saying that, IKEA has a 2pack of B22 Bayonet to E27 Screw adapters for $2.95 and I'm sure the local hardware stores will have something similar.

      • Wow… I didn't even know there were adapters… How reliable are they?

        • +1

Unfortunately I don't know how reliable they are personally.
I would assume electrical components being sold at Aus hardware stores are required to meet Aus Stds.

        • @fuzcatt:
Interesting. I'll look into it, thanks for the suggestion!

most Hue bulbs are E27 screw bulbs.

there's a few UK variants for down lights, and US variants for 120v, you'd only need a transformer to run those anyway, and you could adjust the voltage/amperage for those.

bayonet adapters are cheap enough on ebay, about $2 each, i bought 5 for $8 last year when i picked up a Hue kit. The quality / cheapness is fine, because the bayonet has a socket, an insulator, and a metal stub to convert the screw to the bayonet fitting.

There's generally a low fire risk of absorbing heat or melting plastic, Hue LED bulbs use about 7.2w (on a power meter). Even when on for days, they really don't get hot enough to melt cheap plastic, or heavy duty plastic. the base (the part with the receiver/transformer) is warm, about 40'c to 45'c, perhaps a cup of coffee that's been left for 5 to 10 minutes from boiling water, the glass on top is less severe, about the temp of a mobile phone, perhaps 33'c to 37'c

it's nowhere near as bad as the thermal heat produced by the LIFX, those are much larger, warmer bulbs with more LED elements and wifi receivers, they use about 23w from memory, more than the average LED or fluorescent replacement.

          Thanks for all the information!!

Edit: I accidentally negged you so I can't + you, sorry!

  • When you are after the IRS Lamp too it's an OK deal …

I personally invested in the system from limitlessled.com. For around US$80 you get three lightbulbs, remote and WIFI bridge … so far cheaper.
Not as fancy as IFTTT integration is missing but the system is great quality … for the price you can't beat it (esp. as a strip light controller is only around US$12 and you can use any strip lights from eBay.

For a third of the price.

    • limitlessled come up quite a bit in my research for RGB smart lights; do you know if there's third party app support for them?

      • I use their own app and "Home Remote" on iOS (has even watch support) and the Mac … works pretty well and integrates even with my WEMO switches … for me they are the cheapest and most cost effective quality lights. As said I miss IFTTT and the support and integration for the Philips should be better (but at a high cost). For starters I always suggest to have a go with the limitlessly system … the RGB lights are usually just for play and I prefer the CW/WW lights.

        • if you want to get your hands dirty you could potentially integrate with IFTTT using the Maker channel. https://ifttt.com/maker

I haven't had a look at limitless led's API or anything but if it can take requests from the web it may work

        • @barnetas:

Yep … I think there are some posts around on the net of people managing IFTTT integration … there will be a way but not a nice out of the box way. So far the system is enough for me … just a nice to have.

  • Is it possible to connect and operate iris lamp with the hue app?

    • I believe all Hue (& Friends of Hue) products are able to operate via the official app (and a whole host of 3rd party apps)

  • that name for the product though…
    "Philips Hue" :(

  • I ordered :3

  • +1

Owned this for a while. It works pretty well and I don't remember having any issues with it (using iPhone app).
At the end of the day found myself using only a single colour of light so couldn't justify hanging onto it considering I was using it as a regular bulb.

  • Any plans to bring Philips Hue Lux to Australia?
