I've done a couple of search for 1 adult, SYD-HON return, during those date ranges, and the cheapest I came up with was $746. How do you get the $519 price?

    • Because IWantThatFlight is a very smart app - I got a flight on the Expedia web site that was cheaper than the Expedia search engine returned by 25%.

Did you even click on the link? There is a graphical representation of the entire sale periods flight costs. It is very easy to find them.

      • Ah ha, thanks - yes I clicked the link, but the first thing I saw was the search facility and I thought we had to use that.

        • Hi Kothos,

Are you on mobile? If so, we might trial having the dates/prices at the top & the search box lower as a few other people have had the same problem.

I got excited last time there was a sale to Hawaii, bought tickets and got ready for a week of awesomeness.
… Then I discovered that basic 4 star accomodation was ~ $500 a night (once all resort fees, taxes, duties and gratuities were included).

Then, ANYTHING you want to do in Hawaii has a tourist tax attached to it, converted in AUD and you may as well spend 1/10th of the cost and just go to a local beach!

(PS - Hiking and sailing in Kawaii was the highlight for me! If you do go, get off Oahu and explore the other islands!)

A couple of years ago our party of 4 stayed at a 2 bedroom timeshare apartment around the corner from Waikiki's big hotels and beach for $230 / night. It was great. In other parts of Hawaii you can find great private rentals - in Hilo we paid $200/night for a new 3 bedroom house.

A massive hire car for getting around cost considerably less than something similar here. The beaches and natural highlights were free.

It seems like you got really ripped off? When we went to Hawaii (admittedly, about 4 years ago) we found 4 or 5 star dual-occupancy hotel room right on the main drag of Honolulu for less than $200 per night.

Not only that, everything in the shops was cheap as chips, even if it was more expensive than mainland USA. However, at the time the Aussie dollars was USD$1.10, so that helped a lot!

      • +7

I don't understand how you can say I got 'really ripped off', when your circumstances were entirely different.

$200 four years ago, would be equivalent to $220 this year due to inflation
While the AUD was worth $1.10USD back then, it is now worth a little under $0.70USD today. Which brings the equivalent to ~ $320

Factor in your experience was a year after the bottom of the GFC, so tourism to the middle of the pacific was at its lowest, I think it's fair to say that $400 to $500 is inline with what would be expected to pay today.

So my comment stands, and is reflected in a basic hotel search in the deal date range… But thanks for your input I guess.
For anyone else considering a holiday to Hawaii THESE DAYS, it's worthwhile considering the total trip cost, and not just the airfare.

(I'm not saying don't go the Hawaii, but just be aware of what you are getting yourself in for)

That's turning hearsay into an analytical report! +1 Bluboy could you look into whether the government did or did not tell the cruise co to hire overseas people?

      • +1

$200 a night will get you a 2 star these days. You don't need to spend $500 a night but it depends on what you're willing to settle for.

  • +2

Remember to buy it through the actual Jetstar website so you can save on credit card fees. Ends up being $498 from Sydney.

Forgot to include that in my post. I have updated the OP to mention this.

With our dollar sinking south toward USD60c this will not be an impulse buy. But so tempting.

    • Yes, by the time these flight dates come around, our dollar could even be in the fifties - i.e. less than 60c USD. Great news if you are an Australian exporter, like the education or tourism sectors.

      • a guess, could be higher too

a guess, could be higher too

          It's not random… It's based on economics.

        • +2

@jv: if you were certain the dollar will go down against the USD why don't you short the aussie and buy USD now and make a fortune, nothing is guaranteed

        • @jv: Guesses need not be random and can be based on economics.

        • @clintclint:

if you were certain the dollar will go down against the USD

          Not 'certain', just likely…

why don't you short the aussie and buy USD now and make a fortune

The likely further drop of the $AU has already being factored in… So no fortune there…

        • People, don't argue with jv, he is an economics expert since reading the news headlines and not actually clicking the link to read the article.

        • @jv: wrong again, #guesser

Desperate times are coming for the budget overseas carriers. Very little value in our currency at the moment (unless you go to Canada, Japan or NZ :))

  • Seems like none of the cheap fares are available when the kids are on holidays…

When you take into account the Aussie dollar will be around 60 cents US soon… Not much of a bargain…

    • Still a bargain just not so much from WA were we pay almost double?

      • Still a bargain

Not for families with school kids…

        • …or the homeless or low income migrants, single parent families, yeah I get ya. I feel your pain:) these carriers are also being hit by the $ so makes it even more a bargain.

        • @MMM:

these carriers are also being hit by the $

and much much cheaper fuel prices…

    • gone up 6% since this comment

    Sucks to live in Avalon:

    Avalon (AVV) to Honolulu $1755

A taxi ride up to Tullamarine saves you a whopping $1263 :)
