Showing Samsung is $88 to me

    WD shows as $109

Wait till they open and update the prices. Sometimes they are a bit slow in doing this.

  • +3

    so tempting…
(i wish they'd improve the sorting criteria on their site it's so awkward)

    • +2

the classic tech business with website that looks like ass

    • The only shop I know that can't link StaticIce properly… Main page every time, and each click after that results in a new tab each time. Ergh. And that's their modern site.

      Classic MSY.

is the 2TB WD drive a portable one? Or does it require external power?

    • +1

      Desktop requires external power.

From the web site description Just connect the power and plug the drive into the USB port on your computer to instantly add more storage.

    • Could the drive be removed and used internally?

      • I have done in the past, piece of cake.

      • +12

Generally Western Digital external enclosure drives have a modified SATA interface (drive attached to interface PCB) preventing you from doing that. Seagate, however, will usually be fine so long as you don't mind that brand.

        • Seriously a neg for providing information/answer to a question? The post below mine showing similar info too. Check the neg vote guidelines.

          @Phil Anthropist:

Must have been a Seagate fanboi getting his undies all mixed up… here's a plus vote to balance it out ;).

        • @UFO:

Cheers for that :) I didn't even bag Seagate - just pointed it out as a working alternative DOH

        • @Phil Anthropist:

Brought you back up with a +1 vote :)

      • +2

I have removed the Seagate 2TB Backup Plus (2.5" version) and used it in my PS4 successfully. It's a great upgrade over the stock 500gb drive, using about 40% of it now though :(

I tried with a WD 1.5TB before the Seagate 2TB but the drive connection was just soldered directly onto the drive and it had no SATA interface so to speak so was not possible to use in another device.

    I've always wanted a 'machanical' keyboard…

    • +2

I have a few mechanical keyboards but so far I have yet a machanical version.

      • Mine's a maniacal one.

    • +1

Its for use with the iMach.

      • Thank you! I lol'd :D

  • Awesome getting one now, been needing a new HDD for a while now. MSY are decent I got my last computer from them.

MSY has the absolute WORST retail website in Australia…….FACT : (

Their site now registers the $89 but when you try to pay for it, unsurprisingly jumps back up to $109. Same old, same old, their site is well known for doing this type of bait and switch prices at their Checkout.

    • Boggles the mind that they can afford mechanical keyboards for the staff computers but not a new website.

    • still showing $109

    • +3

Look, you can't have it both ways. You either sell stuff at a high rate but have quality websites, presentation, support and customer service like Harvey Norman, or you can have REALLY cheap prices like MSY do, but have no store to browse, minimal staff and presentation and not great customer service. MSY is for people who know enough about computers to not care about any of the stuff Harvey Norman has to offer. Don't like them? Feel free to go to HN or Big W.

      • +2

It's not too much to ask to pay the price you are shown…. has nothing to do with product selection, if they advertise something as on sale and then charge you the regular price that's not really excusable.

      • They have a store to browse…

        • +3

at many of their stores, you can't actually browse though, it's all behind the counter

        • +1

Yeah, if your version of browsing consists of staring at 4 year old laptops in glass cases.

  • For anyone who received a $30 voucher from Catchoftheday, and has Clubcatch membership for free shipping, they are now selling the WD 2TB portable HDD for $90 delivered (assuming you use the $30 voucher and receive free shipping as a Clubcatch member).

Better hurry as it's only on for another 4hrs 50 min.

  • Guess if you are after Samsung hard drive, not the best deal, best price for this model is $88 from COTD promo, but that was ages ago, a year ago when our Aussie dollar was doing well. Besides, double the capacity https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/167786

I guess the 2tb WD is the best bang for buck at the moment.

    • The 2TB WD is a 3.5" powered external though, not really comparable to a 2.5" USB drive.

      They have a 1.5TB Seagate External for $99 - http://www.msy.com.au/viconline/5-external-hdd/15729--seagat…

      or a 2TB Seagate for $129 - http://www.msy.com.au/viconline/pc-components/15730--seagate…

      • Ops, my bad, didn't see that properly.

      • I just read a review site that claimed portable drives have smaller platters and slower speed than powered desktop ones. (If that's true and you don't need portable - you would want one that is externally-powered.)

        • Well yeah they are slower, there's a reason they can run off a usb cable supplying power and data at the same time. USB3 portable drives I use for ISO and media storage mainly so speed isn't a huge factor. On usb3 normally get around 80mb/s sequential write and 110mb/s sequential read. If you are working with tons of little files or just want a drive to use at one pc for say Backups then an externally powered 3.5" is better

  • Auspost has a 1TB portable Imation for $69

  • For those that got a $20 discount from COTD by using visa checkout, you can get the portable 2TB WD for $100.

The $99.00 1TB portable hard drives are $74.00 at Dicks today with the code FAVE25 click and collect - http://www.dicksmith.com.au/computers-tablets/usb-hard-drive…

  • +1

"Check out our full range of laptop" lol

  • Good as a NAS drive?

  • No change in price at checkout but with postage and handling added for delivery to my address the price ends up $106.38:
    Total products (tax incl.): $89.00
    Total shipping (tax incl.): $15.29
    Handling fee(Delivery Order Only): $2.09
    Grand Total: $106.38

Price was tempting but as I don't need to have a new backup drive right not I think I'll wait for a click & collect OzBargain from somewhere local.
