Let's Carpe the hell out of this Diem!

Someone close to me is sick and we're putting together a bucket list. We could use some help/inspiration…

Thank you.

I always wanted to have ice cream til I feel almost sick from having it (just have a giant 10L tube, sit down with a spoon and eat away).
Or just go on a long cruise trip without thinking about cash or future.
I think going on a trip with someone I love would be something I'd really want to do.

I have other things in my mind, but my girlfriend unfortunately knows my Ozbargain ID.

    Any physical restrictions?

    • Jump out of a plane
    • Scuba dive (google "Discover Scuba")
    • Shark swim/snorkel (A lot of aquariums do this - they're grey nurse sharks so you're more likely to die from boredom waiting for your turn than from the sharks)
    • "Blind Dinner" (totally black room and you are served meals and eat in the dark)
    • Skinny dipping (don't combine this with the shark dive)
    • Abseil / Rock climb adventure outing
    • Meditation retreat (1 day, vow of silence)
    • Talk to a nursing home and see if there is an opportunity to come in and read or talk to residents who don't get many visitors
    • Buy a huge canvas and $100 worth of coloured paints and just go crazy

Try to include one extra different person for each activity. It's a nice way of creating a special memory for each person too. The caveat is that the experience must be a positive one, so encourage them to be the uplifting spirit and allow your loved one to enjoy the moment and not dwell on their sickness as best they can while getting out and about.

No physical restrictions and quite a daredevil:-) Also a romantic.

Done all of the above, some multiple times :-) A close friend is blind. She sometimes forget to switch on the lights when she has guests over. Sometime we remind her ; sometime we just play along :-)

      • +4

        Even better!
        - Spelunking
        - Zorbing
        - High Ropes course
(A trip to NZ might make this a bit of fun/easier with some great activities)

        How about doing some drugs?

They got nothing left to lose anyways right?

        • +4

          @Cheap Charlie:

yes, drugs is not part of my life either

but if I was dying, I will say "What the hell, what more do I have to lose?"

Might as well try some of the drugs at least once in your life..
and when you know you are not gonna live any more, what do u have to lose…

        • @tyler.durden: Spot on mate.

Drugs exist for a reason and that's to provide instant happiness.

    • +2

Wow… I've realised that I've inadvertently done all this (except the mediation and nursing home one) and I'm only in my 20s.

So out of my list (some recommended by friends):

      Travel wise:
      - South Africa hike to Machu Pichu
      - African safari
      - Antartica
      - Jerusalem
      - climb Mount Everest (not to top)

      Crazier:
      - airlift via helicopter to top of a mountain and snowboarding down untamed wilderness
      - High Altitude skydive from 30,000FT in US
      - Krav Maga training / camp @ Tel Aviv
      - BJJ training in Brazil
      - Go to a Bob Marley concert in Jamaica
      - Drive a high performance car around Autobahn / Nürburgring
      - Fly a fighter jet in Russia
      - Taste 50YO Scotch whisky (just crazy expensive)

      Probably not possible anytime soon:
      - Go into space, and even better, each the Moon or Mars

  • What a lovely idea! What's the illness (only if you don't mind saying).

So many thing to see and do, perhaps a trip abroad to Paris, very romantic!

    • Cancer.

      • +4

Have they got kids (young or adults)? Could do some meaningful stuff for and/or with them.

        • Young kids. Thanks Turnip :)

      • -3

        What type of cancer?

        and is it terminal?

        • Do you mind if I ask you how old you are?

        • +11

          @Jar Jar Binks:

Just curious what cancer it is…it's your thread..

If u gonna create a thread then it is natural for ppl to ask questions..

        • +3

          @tyler.durden:

To clarify, I vaguely remember tyler.durden saying he was 15(?). Hence the question.I would rather abstain from having a discussion on the merits of using drugs with a minor.

      • +1

Jar Jar - I am sorry to hear that. It can be a difficult disease to live with.

        • Thank you

      • +1

Ahhh that is harsh, probably no long trips or air travel right?… maybe do a short cruise with them, a few days to an island and back if a dr can approve

  • +1

Eat instant noodles on a blazing hot day with the aircon on full blast… Start with small things I guess :)

    • +9

I remember eating Mi Goreng on a really hot day, in my undies, sitting in front of a fan :) Hasn't every single uni student done that?

      • +6

        Every Indonesian has.

        :D

        • Indomie with rice

      • You gotta do it complete naked… it will accentuate the breeze of the fan

  • Ive got a family member in a similar situation too, so I am interested also to see peoples suggestions.

    • A good friend of mine in NZ is friends with this Julia. She cured herself by eating weeds. I'm keen to try this as I'm very ill myself!

I hope this is of some use my friend:)

      • @bargainslut, I wish you a prompt recovery.

        • +3

Thank you. I'm trying everything I can think of. This thread helps. Love and peace.

      • +1

Do you know which weeds she ate? This would be very useful information.

I wish you all the best with your health. So many in the same boat. Sometimes life can be very challenging.

        • I'm not 100% sure. This link may help http://www.juliasedibleweeds.com/edible-weeds/

If not just contact her directly. She is very kind and wholesome. I'm just starting to forage for weeds in the ACT area, my knowledge is a little limited though.

Please keep in touch as the Information on weeds and nutrition is very limited. Progress will be made in numbers my friend!

      • Sorry to tell you this but any alternative medicine that actually worked would just be called medicine.

        • +1

No need to be sorry. The massive amount of nutrients in edible weeds can cure disease. That's what really counts.

I have not told anyone to skip conventional therapy or that this is a cure. It is on the internet and available for anyone to see. It may be of assistance for them to work with their oncologists.

      • What a fantastic article. Thank you very much.

        • +1

          No problem. Take care.

        • @what: Will do. What
did you think about the edible weed link, just curious.

        • @bargainslut:

Yes. I did have a look at the site and it is very interesting. I think I may have to email her so I can get more specific information.

Hire an awesome 4wd, head on a crazy adventure and see some of Australia's beauty. Stories around a campfire eating basic food in the middle of no where is pure bliss.

I'm fond of Aldous Huxley and his take on mind altering substances to expand consciousness and experience different states of mind. My bucket list includes trying cocaine.

My take is that it is a bucket list and hence things you want to try. why leave it to things like an adrenaline experience (e.g. skydiving) or visiting some destination or eating a certain food.

I was thinking that I'd like to set up a spontaneous bank robbery with someone who had a bucket list. -obviously everything would be planned out with the banks approval and actors/volunteers as customers, people out on the street told what was happening, police informed, etc - like a surprise party where everyone except the guest knows it's happening.

why not think outside the bucket?

but that's me. Other people like what they like.

    Just being honest.

    • My bucket list includes trying cocaine

I'd have thought LSD might be a better choice if you're wanting to experience different states of mind.

      • had a bad experience years ago….

        • And you think cocaine is safer?

        • +1

@pjetson: it's more of a stimulant which is shorter lived than LSD. LSD is a psychotropic which drastically alters your perception.

they are different drugs with different properties.

I believe cocaine to be safer than LSD.

But with every drug there are inherent risks - including legal drugs

caffeine is a stimulant and I trust that.

I tried mushrooms when I was in Japan which was interesting. but didn't do much for me (some nausea and a perceived luminescence glow over everything

        • @altomic:

Cocaine is definitely safer than LSD.

If your friend wants to experience absolute serotonin rush induced euphoria for once in his life, I'd suggest a (carefully dosed) try of MDMA.

        • +5

          @altomic:

"Drugs are a waste of time. They destroy your memory and your self-respect and everything that goes along with your self esteem." - Kurt Cobain

        • @MikeyR: They gave very high doses of LSD to people in clinical trials not very long ago. There is a hilarious video of a 50's type stepford wife on LSD: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Si-jQeWSDKc

What facts are you basing your "cocaine is safer than LSD" on? It is a lot easier to OD on coke, that is for sure.

That MDMA would need to be very clean, for it to feel that way, without it ripping out your heart in the morning, which is extremely rare in Aus. Please don't buy mystery "pingas", though I guess you're too old for that anyhow, and if you do www.pillreports.net - every time.

        • +2

          @Jar Jar Binks:

If you were dying it is good to try it at least once…

You will experience and perceive the world in a completely new way.

Steve jobs did LSD..and some other drugs when he went to india

        • @tyler.durden:

I'd have to agree, may as well try it. It is eye opening (literally).

Oh and you might also want to add acid to the list

        • +1

@tyler.durden: You can add nearly high power profession to the list who have tried drugs. Commonly used by Bankers, Lawyers and even them Doctors lol

Also it should be noted that many medical treatment has the same impact as 'recreational drugs'.

        • @tyler.durden:
I've heard the sand of mushrooms, couple of friends tried it for the first time recently my and called both times two of the best days they've ever experienced. Think you need to have a safe, calm environment though.

Cocaine is a neuro-toxin, and there is no safe dose. Doesn't sound very safe to me.

    • +2

      alcohol is a neuro-toxin.

    • +1

There are neuro toxins in drinking water, food & even in our vacciens we frequently administer.

    • +5

The dose makes the poison, may I interest you in some dihydrogen monoxide?

      • Who knew…. we are surrounded by poison…. our fearless new born again leader Malcolm should make it a top priority to ban this substance ASAP. It has been proven to kill, it is in most commercially produced food in Australia, if inhaled it can kill even in small quantities, a recent survey showed that 20 out of 20 murderers admitted ingesting dihydrogen monoxide in the 24hrs before their crime. It is in nearly all commercially available baby food in Australia.
        THINK OF THE CHILDREN…….

        • Every single person in history who has ever ingested dihydrogen monoxide has died

        • @Dnkei:

or if they are still alive …will die someday:(
          Dihydrogen monoxide

  • +5

If your friend is yet to (and I say this with the utmost seriousness), one night with as high a class escort as he can afford would definitely be one to tick off.

    • "My friend" is very pretty. I reckon she might feel slightly insulted if I suggest that she pays for sex :/

      • +1

how about one night with Jar Jar Binks

        • +7

I'm more addictive than any drugs. One night with me isn't going to be enough ;)

  • +4

I'd probably want to try some illicit drugs, like acid or meth. If i'm dying anyway it's not going to have a long term effect… and i wouldn't be around long enough to get hooked.

    • +2

      If i'm dying anyway…

Hate to be the carrier of bad news but you're dying. We all are. The day we were born, was the day we started our inexorable journey to death.

      • +3

obviously i meant short term death

        • I should add that I wasn't encouraging you to take drugs. I'm a firm believer in self-determination…unless of course you're under 18, in which case I would say that DON't DO Drugs, KID! DRUGS ARE BAD!

Edit: I've noticed that there were quite a few 13-14 year olds lurking around on ozb lately.

        • @Jar Jar Binks: Anything that does things to brain can have detrimental effects on a developing brain. Since brain finishes developing at around 25 (I got that number from a course I did few years ago), I suggest staying away drugs and such until 25 at the very very very very very least.

        • +8

@Oversimplified: Please also stay away from televison, McDonald's, and our entire weird, patriarchal society, until you are 25, these can also have a detrimental effect on developing brains and bodies. It seems to be quite widespread, actually.

        • @woolfenstein: Because consuming chemicals that can disrupt neurotransmitter activities, can cause dependencies and can cause changes to how we react to neurotransmitter is the same thing as what you are talking about (i.e. "televison, McDonald's, and our entire weird, patriarchal society"). Am I correct?

        • @Oversimplified: Whoops.

        • +1

          @Oversimplified:

steve jobs did drugs and look what he created.

He saids after doing drugs LSD and some other drugs
it alter how he viewed the world.

        • @woolfenstein:

          how about alcohol and ciggies,

        • +3

@Oversimplified: There is more chance a person will become obese/suffer from an obesity related illness, than sustain long term damage by using most recreational drugs/ruin their lives becoming addicted to them. Nb. shooting up is not a recreational activity. Sugar and salt addiction in our society is real, the youngest child ever with type 2 diabetes was just diagnosed in the UK. People are getting stupider. The gender norms and etc. forced upon everyone are killing at least one woman a week in Australia. How many dying of true OD (not including I took a mystery pill, always turns out it was all pipes)? But yeah, drugs are bad mm-kay, kids, society is golden, drugs are your biggest threat. Worry about them as you pay to live in a world made of carcinogens, which are sometimes sold as food.

        • @tyler.durden: That's called fallacy of composition, you bring a part from a whole and claim that the whole has to be exactly the same as the part you've taken out. With your logic, why do we have rehab and why do we have such thing as drug addiction?

I honestly think binge drinking and smoking is bad as well. What I've said sort of follows this kind of logic, brain while developing is more prone to damages from these chemicals, therefore I wouldn't take them during the time when it is developing. I think same logic applies to binge drinking and smoking, binge drinking can cause damages to brain therefore I'd suggest the same.

        • @Oversimplified:

what are u going on about?

        • +4

@tyler.durden: You are using one example, i.e. Steve Jobs, and try to stretch that to the entire population.

        • +2

          @Oversimplified:

          Not stretching anything…
you are reading too much into it..

All I have said is that steve jobs did lsd, and he said it changed his outlook on life..

          ===

          Not to mention

there are many tribes and american indians who do/did some sort of drugs as part of their culture..

        • @woolfenstein: You are twisting my words around to prove your point, I will restate what I've said again. Anything that does things to brain can have detrimental effects on a developing brain. Since brain finishes developing at around 25, I'd recommend staying away from them during that time.

It's like how you'd recommend pregnant women to not take medicine unless it's absolutely necessary. Why? Because the chemicals can cause damages to the fetus. I'd recommend not doing any drugs before 25, because it can cause damages to brain and damages during development is bad. I didn't mention anything like what you are saying. I think diabetes is a problem and alcoholism is bad. I'd tell kids to eat healthy and do things that are associated with being healthy, especially if s/he has a family history of diseases.

I am not trying to attack on the idea of recreational drugs (I don't really have an opinion on it yet, tbh), I am simply saying that people under 25 are more prone to possible brain damages because it's still developing. Therefore they shouldn't do it at least until their brain becomes fully developed.

If you think I am wrong or something, I can dig out my notes from my old neuropsychology folder.

        • @Oversimplified: Not gonna re-read it then mate, nothing new to add? Don't waste my time, only I get to do that. You didn't get my point. And that's ok. You can be "right" about this if you want.

        • +1

@tyler.durden: The after effects of alcohol, ciggies and abuse of prescription medicines cost us more than any illegal drug. Decriminalise and regulate them all. Now I'll stop my hijacking though.

        • @woolfenstein:

you should read what he/she said about my steve jobs post above..

        • +1

@woolfenstein: boom! Bloody good post. I'd give +2 if I could.

        • @tyler.durden:

Yes, and look at the other millions of drug addicted in the streets of cities all around the world, and tell me what they are creating. Steve Jobs (a marketing guru) did not achieve it thanks to the drugs, but hard work and commitment

    • -1

Always choose acid. Meth is boring unless you do it right, and ruining your life tends to be an after effect of that.
