  • Looks a good deal, but personally I'm not sure if I want to store so much info on one HHD since I heard reliability of Seagate is not on a par with WD or HGST…

    • +1

It used to be the case but I personally have purchased 6+ Seagate drives over the last couple of years and there has been no issues.

    • I've never had a drive fail within warranty (touch wood), but I always swap them out before the warranty period ends. E.g. 2.5 years into a 3 year warranty. Not foolproof of course, but works so far. After a couple of years, hard drive prices have dropped so much it's easy to upgrade to something bigger and cheaper. The only problem is what to do with my old drives lol

edit: have a mix of Seagate and WD drives - external 3.5, 2.5 and also bare drives in a NAS

  • +1

    Just a note:
For those who've had issues with Seagate External Drives, I used to remove the drives from enclosure and use them as bare drives or via a docking station and they worked like a charm. But it seems in these couple of years Seagate has vastly improved the controllers with the enclosures anyway.

    • How appropriate/reliable would these much larger drives be, once removed from their casing also, and in an eSata Dock ?

I've used lots of Seagate 2Tb Expansion drives successfully in hdd docks, and would love to amalgamate all that data into one tidy receptacle.
Definitely would not be using them at an intense Enterprise level .. its for media processing/digital music workstation sort-of-thing.
Typical session might last for 8 hours at a time, when i'm on a roll …

  • Good price. I bought 2 from Amazon and after conversion is still slightly higher than this.

  • Worked out to be $43.66/TB, no deal for me.
I'm benchmarking Seagate drives BARGAIN to be under $38/TB.

  • Thanks very much for this. 8TB to be able to backup my NAS is a great option. The price of $349 with a local Australian warranty is excellent. JB Hi-fi is $559 for the same model. With my credit card I get Qantas frequent flyer points, and extra 12 months warranty, and by going through Virgin's Velocity website to get to ebay I also get Virgin frequent flyer points.
I expect to pay a bit extra for a very large capacity drive, but the smaller ones just can't do a backup of my NAS, so there's no value in that.
