  • Does anyone know if this is the same product? If so, it's worth reading the feedback comments.

    http://m.newegg.com/Product/index?itemnumber=N82E16822178354

Eg. There seems to be a problem with the USB controller for some people. Removing the drive from the enclosure doesn't allow you to read the drive, unless you reformat the drive (which means you can't access the data if the USB controller fails).

Don't know about the controller issue, but this is not the same product. The newegg one has a smooth case and lies flat, where as this version has a dimpled case and sits on its edge.

How do I know this? I had a 2TB drive similar to the newegg post which died after about 2 yrs. Seagate replaced it under warranty for one similar to the one in this post. The newer one has better ventilation in the case.

Can you remove the hdd for pc use?

        • I'm keen to know that, specifically can I use this HDD for NAS

        • +8

i bought this exact HDD and removed the hard drive.
          it works fine.

        • @Arghs:

        • @Arghs:

        • @TilacVIP:

          @TilacVIP:

a bit late, but confirming that my drive was a ST4000DM000

        • @Arghs:
          Thanks anyway

For comparison Seagate 3.5" 4TB (ST4000DM000) HDD only at MSY is $195.

Buy this for the HDD and toss the enclosure?

  • With the Cashback, I take it you first need to sign up then buy this drive via the link on their web page ??

    • +1

correct. you need to signin to cash reward and navigate to ebay from the link on their website

Seagate 4TB's in particular have such a bad rep, would be interested if it wasn't for that.

  • Does this spin down like the WD Greens when not in use?

  • +1

I'm pretty sure this is a dupe as I bought this yesterday following another post on here.

Either way it was the best value external hd across the ebay 15% and DS 30% deals.

  • looking at a HDD for an old NAS, looks like this is the cheapest I'll get a 4tb

  • Agh, I was hanging out for this to be cheap for so long that I eventually bought a 5TB HDD from The Good Guys during the $50 back eBay promotion. Oh well.

  • Can this be Picked up via eBay store?
EDIT: Ok, you can.. but no stock in Melbourne CBD..grrrhh!!

  • Awesome!! Thanks

Be careful, it is only 1 year warranty, Dick smith's information is incorrect, the modal is not reliable, use the cheapest HDD, not suitable for NAS. the model No. is STEB4000300, you could check SEAGATE website!

    • Just got it today. Box says 3 year limited warranty. Check seagate also said 3 years warranty for our region. Not sure why it is different for other region.

  • Good deal thanks for sharing.

  • This is a Good deal, Does Anyone know if this is reliable? I don't want it to crash again on me like my old WD mybook and lost all my backup

  • Anyone know if there is there a way to use Dick smith gift cards on eBay?

  • Anyone having luck with the click and collect option?

Whenever I try to search it it comes back "Operation timed out, please try again in a few minutes."

Damn, sold out. Please mark as expired. No wonder: 3 different people purchased 15 of them! That a rather impressive pornographic collection they must have to back up. Or perhaps they are resellers?

    • Still available around me.

    • Also still available near me in Brisbane south side.

Not a reliable drive, but better than the 3TB Seagates.. There was a study published earlier this year that found the larger Seagate drives were notoriously unreliable. If I had data on one of these I would recommend you also have it somewhere else.

Its ok, Dicky can replace em under warranty, always the best backing up habit is made multiple copies.
