Corolla Car Tyres- First timer

Hi ozbargainers. Breaking my posting-cherry. My tyres are getting very worn on my Corolla Ascent Sport. Was wondering where do I start with car tyre research, what tyres do I select and how much is it likely to cost me to replace all 4?

    Don't cheap out on tyres..
Your best bet is to replace them with the same Brand and Style as they come from the factory.

I would disagree with that. Often car manufacturers will not put really good tyres on their cars from factory. It comes down to cents per tyre with the tyre manufacturers competing for the contract.

Many here can probably remember the substandard tyres that came with locally manufactured cars in the 1990s. Even today, changing the brand and model of tyre on a Honda Jazz completely changed the dynamics for the better. It drives like a different car. If I known the change it would make I would have replaced the tyres at the start.

Same size, width and speed rating; yes. Same OEM tyres? Not necessarily.

Better than putting on some no-name brand tyres.

Brand new brand-name tyres start from about $70 each fitted.

If you live near a Costco they can do a set of four while you shop, and you don't have to research anything - they'll pick exactly the right tyre size, and they only stock like two brands (top-quality stuff, as you'd expect).

Bridgestone/Firestone also have a "buy 3 get one free" going on when I got mine done a few days ago, it's probably still on ($99 each plus balance, so still came out around $340 for all four). That's really a great bargain, but I just needed it done quickly.

Plenty of dodgy places will offer you mis-matched sets or slightly wrong sizes (which can be OK if you understand exactly what the difference means and know what sizes work with your car, but could also be dangerous, use more fuel, etc) but typically you only save like $10-$30 per tyre.

It's your money, and as long as you research a lot online and know what you're doing, it's up to you, but if your time is worth money and you're not already a car enthusiast, err on the side of safety.

Good tyres can literally save your life. Few purchases are that important.

Just go and get some quotes - Kmart Tyre and Auto, Bob Jane.

Buy tyres that are good in the wet. Way less scary driving when it is raining.

Quite a few years ago, I developed a fear of the rain and when it rained I wouldn't leave the house. Wasn't till I bought new good tyres (yokohamas - were on special at Bob Jane at the time) that I realised I wasn't scared of the rain anymore. I was scared of how the old tyres on my car made the car behave when I was driving in the rain. No fear at all with yokohama tyres. So get good tyres.
