  • I've been interested in purchasing a security system for some time now and have always seen these at costco, but never knew if it was a good buy or not.

Anyone had experience with this system?

    • Same here - always thought that its not a necessity hence have been putting of my purchase..

Last week my next door neighbor got burgled and that just came as a wake up call to get one..

Now the task of installing 8 cameras is going to be fun!

      • I've always wondered, how exactly do people expect "security" cameras to protect them from burglary? All they do is let you know you've been burgled. Which you probably already knew, since your stuff isn't there anymore. Putting a DVR in my car doesn't stop people from crashing into me (though it might help prove who's at fault) so how does adding a camera to a house make it safer?

These are not a security systems. They are surveillance systems. People seem to think if there's a video recording of a the thief the police are suddely going to be able to catch them. Police don't care. The video is usually such poor quality nobody can even see a face.

I know this from experience. I sat filming the house next door when I could see two people breaking into their car. I was on the phone to 000 while recording. The police did absolutely nothing. After spending ten minutes watching the guy disable the immobiliser and hop in to drive away, with the police saying they were too busy to attend, I ended up just driving my car up and parking the guy in, so he couldn't steal the car. Despite perfect photos of the thieves, the police didn't even bother doing anything, just told neighbour to contact their insurance company about repairing the damage done to the car. Because the police did nothing, neighbour had to pay insurance excess anyway.

You're basically throwing away $799 if you think it's going to protect you. Some fake cameras or security stickers would probably work just as well and be far cheaper to install.

        • I think it would act as some kind of deterrent (though a lot of members here argue it would cause reverse effect - one sees a surveillance system so must be a lot of valuables), but yeah it is mainly to monitor and see what actually had happen and also to set deterrent telling thieves to 'go away, you are being recorded'.

It's like all those shops that has a board saying 'smile, you are on camera'. They don't put hidden cameras but rather big ass obvious cameras as a sign of telling you that they are watching. In reality, they couldn't do anything either when people steal, they just got to write off the loss.

  • Also tempted, but most reviews of Swann products seem to be less than favourable.

  • The Theft Deterrent Stickers would be the only part of this that may be useful.
