Tommy Hilfiger Polo Shirt $35 @ Costco Ringwood, Melbourne, Membership Required

460

Bought some of these Polo's, some for myself and some for family. I paid $75 for one when Myer had a sale one last year, usual retail price is $100+

Great deal, best to try it on as sized as US medium = EU large

    • Yeah $35 is a lot these days for a polo shirt to be called a bargain.

I would go as far to say $35 is at the premium end of the market, unless you pay full price. Who does that!!

      • +3

I would happily rather pay $35-$50 for a single RL Polo Shirt rather than 10 Aldi polo shirts. I will only be wearing the thing for a few years on the odd social occasion and then probably replace it and off to the Brotherhood Bin goes the old one. I want it to look good for the few events I wear it to, if I bought 3 or more chances are they would sit in the packets for 3 years in a drawer and then be off to the Brotherhood Bin unopened.

I have had cheap polos before from Target/Big W etc and my experience is that the material is much thinner and quality much poorer. I would never pay $120 ish for a full price RL Polo but I would buy a discount one that looked good from an outlet rather than multiple cheaper ones from a supermarket. There are plenty of deals around for stylish clothes. I get a kick out of wearing the exact same clothes people pay stupid $$ for……..but I buy them cheap!

      • -3

If you think $35 is the high end of the market, you obviously dont buy your own clothes. Probably your wife or mother does that for you…

Edit: My fat finger accidentally clicked on the + sign for your comment. It should be 2 -ve votes for you at the time of my post.

        • Well it is the higher end unless you are paying RRP? RL, Lacoste both available under $50 relatively easily despite RRP $100+.

        • +1

          @nubzy:

Find me an RL that is under $50 and it is not from the DFO's XXXXL bin…

If you don't like Tommy Hilfiger, just move on. Some people might find this a bargain, just like how people like expensive apple phones over androids. No need to give yourself an compliment. You don't need 'online' validation.

      • -6

What made you assume that I dislike TH or sought 'online' validation (whatever that means)? Why would I go into a TH shop if that was the case? I was merely pointing out that I compared the quality/price of two products and decided that the one from Aldi was a bargain. If the TH Polo was of a much better quality I would have considered it.

        • +1

Simple answer, if you are after a functional cheap polo don't buy a designer brand.

        • @2ndeffort:
There used to be a big difference between designer/brand name and more generic brands stuff in terms of quality. The gap was so wide that all the cheaper stuff were just not worth considering and I would happily pay the premium for top brands for the quality. But it's no longer the case these days as the generic brands get better with each iteration of their products. A few years ago, I would pick up a Polo shirt from Aldi and put it back because the quality was bad. There would be stacks full of them unsold, unlike the one I bought which was the only one left. In contrast, some top brands have slackened off and have introduced product lines that are clearly inferior in quality, relying instead on their brand name to flog them.

    • Lol everyone is a consumerist these day, no need to pretend to be on a high horse.

    • +2

You are obviously not middle class, and don't understand their mindset. True middle class folk are obsessed with high end clothing brands, just like they are obsessed with Apfel electronics, SUVs, posh coffee (take a look at a Nespresso flyer), expensive whiskey and connoisseur wines. If they cannot afford the genuine article, like a new monogram covered Lois Vuitton bag, they will choose the second best thing, a LV counterfeit from Commie China. The Middle class is status fixated, and in our consumer capitalist society the main way to acquire status is through the acquisition of luxury good.

True middle class people avoid 'ALbrecht DIscount' stores like they would lepers.

A lot of people here, in Oz, think TH is a premium brand… but in the US, Tommy Hilfiger is a cheap brand.

Very similar with Calvin Klein; Another "good-side-of-cheap" brand. (but expensive here)

I've bought many TH shirts for less than $15USD (from their official stores) - the same shirts in David jones for around $80 - $100

  • Which Costco store?

    • They were at the Ringwood store when I was just there.

I actually bought a Nautica polo shirt there for $28.99 as they fit me better. Both good quality shirts.

      • Can confirm nautica polo for the same price at the lidcombe store. Bought one today

    • Costco Ringwood , Melbourne

  • +ve for outing yourself as a Broden

  • +1

Now I will avoid this brand.

Don't pay premium prices for Costco bargain hunters to get it on the cheap.

    • +1

The brand appears on COTD, all the time

      • They would be legit right?

        • I recently bought a th tshirt from cotd, and found the logo was a lot more inwards compared to one i got from an outlet, which is like directly above the nipple. Also the material is thinner. So not sure if they are fake or just selling low quality.

        • @jonolad: I don't think COTD will ruin their reputation selling fakes. Though they reserve the right to source the brand from other countries, which is probably this case. Quality standard can differ between country factories.

        • @gamechanger: I would be more concerned they were inadvertently selling fakes. Like the time target was selling fake Mac makeup. Obviously purchased through some shady channels.

    • I thought 'Bargain Hunters getting it on the cheap' is what OzBargain was all about??

  • -1

    chav wear :(

    • lol - can't tell if you think that is a lot, or not much.

      Either way, very funny

  • I'm assuming these are regular fit and not slim fit?

    • haven't bought TH for a few years, but in the past they have been like wearing shopping bags

  • What makes those "Tommy Hilfiger" + "Polo Ralph Lauren" and possibly other brand name polo shirts have a very expensive price tag?

Which will weigh up on the top, "Brand" or "Quality"??

    Your thoughts?

    • +2

Depends on whether you want a cheap functional piece of clothing or a stylish fashionable piece of designer clothing. You pay extra for the latter. I am wearing a RL Polo as I type this and it is much higher quality, in a nicer colour and looks a lot better than the cheap target polo I cut the lawn in or the cheap embroidered polos that my work gives us for wearing to the office. All the polos are OK functional clothing, the RL one is the nicest and as something nice that I would wear to a special BBQ or visit to friends etc it is far and away the best looking. I'm not really a fashionista but if I was taking my wife somewhere nice or going to a special occasion I would probably rather wear the nicer top rather than the plain, functional one that cost the least. If I was simply after something cheap and functional to cover my body I would wear the $10 Target one!

      • +1

I agree with you, they just fit better and look better.
I have cheapies and rl, hillier etc. The designer ones keep their colour and shape for a lot longer the cheap ones I find. Actually Gazman are pretty good too but are not super cheap if not on sale.
Only designer one I don't like are lacoste they shrink/lose shape like target ones.

      • +1

If you wear Ralph Lauren while browsing OzBargain, then what do you wear when you go out?

        • +1

Just been out at the MCG Open Day with the free tickets I found from the link on OzBargain. Drove there in the new Volvo I bought from the link here on OzBargain. Whilst there I played 'kick to kick' with my son with a football we bought on some discount I found here on OzBargain. Both of us were wearing runners we got off some deal here on OzBargain. The Polo shirt is probably the only thing I didn't buy via an OzBargain deal…I bought it in a factory outlet in the states.

I cant afford a second wardrobe to have specialist 'bargain hunting' clothes! I just have to make do with whatever I have on from the day's efforts! ;)

        • @2ndeffort:

What Volvo did you end up getting?

In terms of design, do they really have a big difference between each other. As i honestly cannot tell except the logo haha..

        • Yes, the cut and the materials are different.

Better ones hold their shape better, and generally have thicker collars. Having said that some Polo RL are cut terribly and look sloppy.

The cheapest of the cheap also pill.

    • +1

      Quality for me.

The majority of the time the brand name polo tops (and clothes in general) are better quality than no-name or store brand (K-Mart etc) polos.

Having said that, it's not always the case and you have to look at it on a case to case basis.

Occasionally you'll get a no-name polo which is excellent quality, so don't dismissed them.

I've had bout 10 Polo RL polo tops over the past 15 years and they are good quality, I usually get a few years wear out of them. After that they look shabby so I just wear them at home.

I find good Polo RL tops hit and miss with their cut, some just look sloppy, maybe they cater for the US sized person (obese).

These days I stopped wearing Polo RL tops, but still have 2 brand new ones as people give them to me as presents because people seen me wear Polo RL so frequently over the past 15 years! lol.

On at trip to the US 5 years ago I purchased a Abercrombie & Fitch polo top as the cut was perfect for me (tighter fit and shorter sleeve) and felt very well made- http://www.abercrombie.com/shop/wd/mens-polos-clearance/icon…

The quality is far superior to PRL & Tommy, much thicker and keeps its shape after washing it over 50 times. Even after 50+ washes, it still looks like new. My RL ones would look worn out by then.

I purchased another A&F polo here at an outlet somewhere in Australia for like $30 on sale, unfortunately only had 1 colour in my size.

I was in Malaysia on holidays a few years ago and went into FOS which use to sell genuine Ralph Lauren clothes cheap. I found they stopped selling Ralph Lauren polo tops, but they sold a Northern Rock polo which was identical to Abercrombie & Fitch except for the brand and logo. Even the stitching and the internal lining was the same (I suspect it was produced by the same factory). I bought one to test out for $10-$12, wore and washed it a couple of times, and yep, felt exactly like the A&F one, so about about 5 more on the same trip.

I still have a couple of unworn Northern Rock polo only because my existing Abercrombie & Fitch and Northern Rock polo's still look as new even then they are 5 & 3 years old respectively.

So if you have a chance, check out Abercrombie & Fitch (or the Northern Rock copy), you'll never buy another Polo RL or Tommy.

Polo RL or Tommy are regularly sold for USD$20 or less at the outlets in the US.

  • Any at docklands?

Lacoste. Now that's a polo shirt

    • +2

Lacoste are crap now. Absolutely terrible. They fit like a tent and the material is much thinner, also far too short. Made in China too, but still a premium price normally around $80 on sale though David Jones had some for $49. Never buying another Lacoste. Will stick to Ralph Lauren on sale at the outlets. Only thing Lacoste has going for them is the mother of pearl buttons and the logo which will always be a classic.

      • I've never bought as the material feels really …. slinky(?) …. not sure if it's good quality or poor quality.

      Bargain.

  • Any guys can weigh in on this? When you see a girl in a polo, do you think it is unfeminine?

    • +9

Not at all, polos are one of the most feminine cars around ;)

    • +1

No, you can get girls cut Polo shirts. When you see women wearing oversized men's cut polos as a large curtain-like block of fabric they look unfeminine in the same way as a massive oversized t-shirt does but the polos made to fit females look very feminine.

  • -2

Brands. Marketing. Perceived styles & fits.

A real differentiator is where they're made:
    Made in Melbourne
And before you ask - they cost less.

    Edit: some are $10 each

  • The report card.

    Result: F

  • This whole thread is like comparing a Porsche 911 to a Kia. They tell me Kias are improving all the time and they make some nice reliable cars now. In terms of functionally transporting me around and getting me places both would perform the function exactly the same and the Kia would cost a lot less to buy, own and operate. If I had the choice and I could afford it I would still buy a Porsche though!

    • And Porche disproportionately profit from that transaction.

      • How is that disproportionate, If we in the market are collectively stupid enough to pay their price then good luck to them. There is no 'fairness commission' for pricing. Yes they are getting away with robbery but every Doctor or CEO that buys a Porsche is free to spend their $$ on a Kia instead yet they still choose the Porsche. If Porsche can market their products to a position where they are paid way overs for the privilege then well done!

        • The 911 will always be worth something. It may even increase in value.

The Kia's value is in freefall and will hit ZERO, just of matter of when.

        • @Son ofa Zombie: And the Kia you will lose a maximum of $30k, whereas a 911 will lose more than $30k in long term.

  • If anyone sees whether there are women's ones please post…

    • my wife saw some women's tommy hilfiger polo top at costco lidcombe today.

      • Thank you!

  • Is this expired?

  • Got a polo from ringwood costco last week, they had heaps of stock but not many size small, which is actually "US Small/EU Medium" (MURICA!) so not that small.

Anyway, they only have grey and black, and this is actually "Hilfiger Golf" range whatever that means, but its pretty similar to other TH polos I've bought in the US.
