CONNOISSEUR ICE CREAM Has Completely Changed Their Stick Icecream Range Opting For Cheaper Ingredients, Thoughts?

Ok so I probably just bought the last box today Ill ever buy of Connoisseur Kangaroo Island Honey With Pistachio sniff :'( It was the second to last box in the supermarket and the rest were just the new 2015 Connoisseur stick icecream range - http://www.connoisseuricecream.com.au/ranges/choose-your-nex… Everywhere seems to be out of the old range except service stations with old stock. So what does everyone think of them changing their stick icecream range, opting for cheaper ingredients ie. losing the pistachios and macadamias etc and opting for cookies and churros which are cheap to make. I dont usually eat icecreams but fell in love with the Connoisseur range cos they were so yummy and fancy. Now theyve got this new range, its ok, but not like their old range with Kangaroo Island Honey and Pistachio and Salted Caramel and Macadamia etc. Hmm so should we be picketing or just resign to the fact that theyre just a company trying to get by and want to maximise profits by cutting out expensive products like macadamias and pistachios from their icecreams. Anyway egh whatever, thoughts?

Go get a tub of messina or something lol.

    • Oh ok yeah if youre going to get into icecream shop icecreams Movenpicks pretty yummy. Havent tried Messina though, its nice is it? Says theres shops at Fitzroy and Richmond on their website - http://www.gelatomessina.com/au/about/ Must check them out. I guess I was thinking more easily accessible supermarket ranges like Magnums (yeah theyre ok) etc. Do you have any favourite supermarket icecreams?

Oh yes I love Movenpick! My favourite is their hazelnut one (not sure what the actual name is). Have a family friend working at Nestle who gets them at wholesale price which is awesome :))

Ooh nice your new best friend this summer maybe. The swiss definitely know how to make nice icecream :)

If you live anywhere near a Messina and have never tried it. You have missed out on life…

        • Lol obviously will have to try them then :)

        Anyway egh whatever, thoughts?

        Three thoughts spring to mind:

        1) paragraphs
        2) full stops
        3) commas

This reads like a random, long winded thought, and looks like a wall of text.

        In summary; TL,DR

I was about to post this, re: Messina.

Give the Coles brand 500mL range a go. I have tried their Peanut Butter ice cream and it's fantastic. Lots of nuts.

I also rate their Honey and Pistachio flavour.

There is quite a few flavours in this range. Obviously not the same luxurious feel as eating it from a Connoisseur tub, but at only $4 it's a clear winner.

      • Ok yeah Ive looked at the Coles range of icecreams but havent tried them, will have to do a taste test then. Ive tried the Bulla icecreams on a stick and they were ok but I wouldnt get them again. Ill definitely give the Coles range a go though, thanks :)

    • Messina is so good (and not too expensive, though they did just raise there prices). There icecream has textures!

      • Mmm sound yummy :)

Unfortunately, the product life cycle must go on.

I don't feel that they necessarily wanted to skimp on quality ingredients, but maybe give a slight seasonal change. Maybe there has been a recent decline in sales across the range. Consumer products need to stay profitable and fresh. If sales decline in this new product line, hopefully they go backwards and bring back the nutty stuff.

Sending an email to the company demanding to bring it back won't do much. I sent Birds Eye a heartfelt email about their Steamfresh range when they discontinued Broccoli, Carrots, Sugar Snap Peas & Water Chestnuts. This was a staple in my freezer. I was devastated. It's been over a year now, and I think I've moved on..

As with a previous comment, I highly recommend Messina. I'm not big on ice cream either, but if I am nearby Messina - I will definitely get myself a 3 scoop cup. Regret? Not even once.

I guess youre right. I just really liked them cos they seemed like a really premium type of icecream, now they just kind of feel like all the rest and non stand out'ish. Is probably a good thing though they were just making me fat anyway. And re your Steamfresh frozen veggies I remember getting the ones with the water chestnuts (absolutely love water chestnuts for some reason, so crispy). So are they discontinued now, that sux :( But obviously have to try Messina icecream now if you guys think its really nice, will put it on the to do list :)

        its still there
so maybe like mattelic said it is seasonal

        • Oh ok yeah they are in that link theyre not in the stores near me though. Theyve been slowly phasing them out and replacing them with the new range. Oh well itll be interesting to see what happens and if they bring them back or not. I guess itll depend on how well the new range sells

    • Just curious did Birds Eye do you the courtesy of a non automatically generated reply at least?

      • WHAT?! I CAN'T HEAR YOU….

you can still pick it in coles
maybe it just ur local store doesn't have room for all flavours

    • Oh ok yeah theyre not in the stores near me, but like djones145 said theyre still listed as a product they produce on their website. So maybe just the Coles stores near me have chosen to remove the old range and replace it with the new. I guess if they dont sell well they might bring them back not sure :(

Vote with your wallet. It's disappointing behaviour by a brand though they are misguided if they think people will keep buying them regardless of how they change things.

  • Ahm … that's what every food processor ever does.

You should try the Woolworths branded range of ice creams that look like magnum ice creams, they are pretty great for the price. They are often 50% discounted too.

    • Oh ok yeah might have to give them a go too :)

  • I actually like most of the new range they've introduced. They don't taste any "cheaper" than the old ones to me, just different. I wasn't aware they were planning to phase out the old flavours though (if they are); they are still available at the Coles and Woolies I visit.

OTOH, the new Magnum Americana flavours are rubbish (and a ripoff because they're quite small).

    • Good to know thanks, yeah I havent tried the Americana ones. Lately generally if I get Magnums its the Ego Caramel, theyre pretty sweet though and almost taste like youre eating a chocolate bar with a bit of icecream in the middle so dont feel overly good for you but taste nice. I guess what icecream is good for you, but you can get ones that are bit better for you like using better quality ingredients and nuts n stuff. Yknow what would be nice is to have like an icecream with bits of goji berries on them or crushed pumpkin seed bits or something?? Which'd be different to the icecreams being coated in macadamias or pistachios but cooler/less cheap ass/healthier than bits of cookie or churros.

      • +1

Ok so my hour project of the day was to come up with stick icecreams that could be covered in bits of goji berries or crushed bits of pumpkin seeds (refer to my comment just above). Started with the goji berries, looked up where they were from, one of the places was Tibet n Im like yeah Tibetan something or other could work, looked up what products are native to tibet which was not a lot not unless you make it from Yak milk, they did seem to use tea in their sweet dishes, ginseng grows there but I think people can be allergic to ginseng or it raises the heart rate?? or something like that so probably a bad ingredient to use. Fruits/nuts that are not native but can be grown there are apple, chestnut, orange, walnut, apricot, peach, plum, cherry, banana, pear, strawberry, grapes and rhubarb. So in the end I came up with - Tibetan Cherry and Goji Berry. What do you think? Didnt even get around to the pumpkin seeds :(

        • Yeah so thinking goji berry and pumpkin seeds are a bit outside the square maybe but just something better than covering stick ice creams with cookies and churros would be nice. But lastly back to the cherry ice cream idea I went to the Gelato World Tour when it turned up in Melbourne a while back and I swear by far the best ice cream was the cherry ice cream made by the people that ran the event. It was seriously amazing. Also Brunettis had an entry at it with their fig ice cream which was pretty nice too. Also +1 to Brunettis postachio ice cream that I tried recently there insert pic of Homer drooling here

          @Lucky13:

I love ice cream, but you sound like an ice cream freak LOL. Perhaps you should get a job designing flavours for Connoisseur.

        • +1

          Hey Lucky

I am actually in the process of opening up an ice cream store in Melbourne and currently experimenting with flavours. Your idea of Goji berries is very interesting. If you are willing to forego a royalty on the use of Goji Berries in ice-cream, I would love to invite you and a few of your friends to come and try cherry and goji berry flavoured ice-cream made just for you. :P

I will PM you details if you are interested.

        • @Justing197: Oh ok thanks for the offer Justing197. I might decline though, but if you want to use the idea in a new ice cream creation thatd be great and I dont have any problems with you using the idea. If you do it though maybe you could post some pics here or something for everyone to see which'd be nice :)

bulla ice cream is good (no caps lock here) but movenpick is in another league of its own.

  • Actually one Ive been meaning to try is the Mars and Snickers Ice Cream bars has anyone tried those? Are they any good? Also the Cadbury Marvellous Creations Ice Creams looked ok. I was going to try them but I noticed the other day they werent at my Coles. Now searching on Coles Online I dont actually see them there, maybe Coles doesnt stock them anymore.

EDIT: Ok re the Cadbury Marvellous Creations Ice Creams cant seem to see the stick version of it on their website so they mightve discontinued it, but theyve got a tub version of it - http://www.cadburyicecreamland.com/products

    • +1

I like the Mars ice cream bars (more than the original bars actually). I think I tried the Marvellous Creations ones once (or maybe it was the chocolate itself) but didn't like them. They look like they might appeal more to kids.

      • Oh so you tried the Mars ice creams and loved them, nice, Ill definitely get them now. Ive looked at them heaps to buy but havent tried them as yet, so Ill definitely get them now. Thanks heaps :)

I still personally think Connoisseur changed the receipt for the tubs some time last year. I use to love the stuff, couldn't put it down. Now it feels relatively unremarkable in terms of texture and the flavours are 2 dimensional. I raised a thread many months back but no-one else really seemed to agree with me.

    • I actually have never tried the tubs only the stick versions. So you think theyve changed, thats interesting. Ive noticed brands do things like that probably instead of increasing prices over the years they change formulas or reduce the size of their product. Maybe this is whats happening, could be

  • +1

surely they would pass the saving onto the consumer, cheaper ingredients so cheaper ice cream for everyone??

joke of the day right here.

  • I'm not a fan of the around the world marketing they're doing. Himalayan, Canadian rolls my eyes just say salt and maple

    • Lol yeah they do seem to be a big fan of the restaurant lingo ie. describe things hard to try and make it sound better. I dont know I dont mind it, it makes it sound fancy :)

  • I tried connoisseur's "Emperor Nero" the other day and it was literally the best thing I've ever eaten in my life.

    • Coffeeee!! Nooo why you do this Connoisseur. Ive never been able to stomach coffee and the smell too so horrible. Freshly brewed coffee in the morning… bleagh worst thing ever lol. Ive learned to live with my disability though but I swear everyone drinks coffee, feel so like the odd one out = sux. But apart from that it sounds nice :D

  • +1

i use to work for a FMCG consumer marketing business, so dealt with quite a few of these food companies. If there are enough people not buying the new range, and/or enough people venting their anger on social media about the changes, they would usually bring the old range back.

    • Oh ok nice thanks, I guess we'll see what happens then :)

  • +1

Looks at new range….. OP maybe you should look at "KING CYRUS OF PERSIA" its PISTACHIO WITH CINNAMON, HONEY & DATE. Might be pretty much a direct replacement for the one you loved that went away.

(sorry for the caps, copy and paste, too lazy to correct)

    • Ok yeah I should expand to the tubs I guess and just put Ice Magic on it instead of only strictly eating the stick ice creams. That ice cream does sound pretty specky though, will have to try it maybe :)

keeps some old sticks and make you're own? :)
