TravelEasy.com.au Has Gone Bankrupt and Now I've Lost All My Hotel Deposits for My Upcoming Trip

Hi All,

I have been using travel easy over the years to get discounted prices on hotel bookings. It's an Australian based hotel booking website. It always worked out cheaper than trivago/ booking.com ect. I used it recently to book around $1000 worth of hotels for my upcoming trip in December to Cambodia and Vietnam.

I then got this email from Travel Easy :

Important Notice!
As at 29 September 2015, hoteltraveleasy.com / traveleasy.com.au has ceased to trade. All bookings from today that are not yet checked in will not be honoured. Notwithstanding this, to apply for a full refund of any payments made on your credit card in respect to the bookings, please contact your financial institution. You can also contact your hotel direct to make further arrangements and for general assistance. Alternatively, contact Rodgers Reidy for further information: [email protected] or call +61 (2) 9262 1894. The fast declining Australian dollar leading to excessive currency losses and competition within the market selling below cost has led to this position. It is with great sadness it has come to an end

I had not yet purchased travel insurance for my trip. What are my options from here? I have contacted my bank ANZ and they have advised I need to take it up with the company direct. Do I have any options which won't fully leave me out of pocket?

Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

If you paid by credit card, you can lodge a claim with ANZ. If you paid in some other way, you'll need to take it up with the accountants.

    • Agreed. Since they have stated they won't be honouring the booking you have good cause to file a credit card dispute.
I think credit card was the only form of payment they accepted?

Alright well I'd contact them and find out what the deal is.

Definitely call ANZ back and tell them that you are meant to lodge a claim with your bank.

Also next time make sure you buy travel insurance when you buy your tickets :)

  • Here is a link to ANZ disputed transaction form.

Note you can do this via internet banking as well.

Thanks for the advice guys. Now waiting to hear back from ANZ. Will update to advise how I go. Cheers.

  • With banks it is often down to the knowledge and self-motivation of the operator. If you ring again you may get a more helpful responder. But it looks like 'Baysew' above has given the best option.

Sounds like you've had a lot of trouble with this trip.

    • You're not wrong!! ANZ ending up getting our hotel money back to us. I'll let you know how I go with jetstar and my travel insurance company.

      • That's a good start.

  • you had said above that you had not bought travel insurance. However, many tvl ins companies do not cover travel companies going out of business. So interested to see how this works out.
