Car Hire for Under 21 Year Olds ?

Hey Ozbargainers, just wanted to gleam some experience from some of you guys that may have been in this situation before or have a way out of this.
Basically, next month a group of 17/18 year olds are planning a trip to Port Stephens. However travel is the only issue being the supply of cars. We have legal drivers just no one has a car to drive in for 4 days. Is there anyway around this?
The car hire places seem extremely expensive and will only provide cars to 21+ year olds.

Any advice is appreciated!

Thanks :)

Go to a car hire shopfront if you can. I was 20 last year and I was stuck in Tasmania, and every single web enquiry and phone call was met with the same line: "yes we have cars for hire…you're a P2 licence holder? Sorry we don't have cars today"

When I rocked up in person they suddenly magically had cars.

  • Take someones mum on the road trip?

    • Well wouldn't that be interesting

  • I wonder if it has anything to do with being younger than 21 and the car hire contract is not enforceable in the event of an accident….

    • and the car hire contract is not enforceable in the event of an accident

It most certainly is enforceable. The age of majority is 18 in Australia.

    • The age of being able to contract under Australian Law is 18

    • It has more to do with people being under 21 are a risk which their insurers aren't willing to cover.

  • Invite someone else you know definitely has a car. Problem solved.

      I have a car!

  • Chances are they will hire it to u, the excess will be crazy though. Prolly over 3k if you.have a crash!

    Maybe train and bus it
Or train it there and hire a car there.

Buy an old banger. It would end up cheaper then sell it when finished

Keep your eyes open for a bargain… Car City!

  • Borrow your parents car and give them the cash to hire a car.

  • How big is the group? Perhaps a parent could drive a minibus to drop them off and pick them up. If they plan their itinerary in Port Stephens they could share taxis. Taxi with 4 passengers could work out cheaper than hire car and certainly less stress for whoever puts the bond up for the hired car.
For that matter, train and taxis - perhaps worth doing the sums.
