  • great price if you want a good gaming laptop, weight isnt too bad either(2.3kg) but haventg found the batt life, price almost matches newegg btw

  • Good price, I was gonna buy the same thing off ebay for $1300 with blu-ray but got this instead as is $200 cheaper and don't really need blu-ray plus it has warranty in Australia.

  • yeah it's suprisingly cheap for a sony

a better specs(CPU) goes for only $450 on ebay!
    http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=110481…
it also has longer warranty than this, why would I pay two times the price(one grand+) for this?

    • Indeed, further more there are many reports on the net about CoTD customers who waited months for delivery. By the time you receive it, the goods will be obsolete.

Not a good comparison at all. Your linked laptop beyond it's superior CPU looks ancient. 14.1" 4:3 ratio screen, not even 16:10 let alone 16:9. I thought 4:3 laptops went out of production 5 years ago. Then there is the old 80GB HDD and the 1GB RAM. Not sure abouts its video card but I'm guessing its equally as outdated. So to compare this laptop you'd need to do some upgrades and be happy with a 4:3 ratio screen. Not a just reason for negging this bargain.

As for battery life I've found someones comments from newegg and with sadness I must say it's probably the weak link in the Sony:

"Battery life on power saver mode, while typing reports and just basic serfing, no vids. is almost 4 hours long! wich really suprised me. was getting alittle over 2 hours 45 min while watching a mkv move, before it went to hybernate mode. verry quiet, and cool."

I was hoping for 5 hours from light usage and 3 from heavier. I guess it's not "poor" but it's the one thing that's got me holding back at the moment.

I agree that the comparison is s**t mainly because the linked item is USED, in addition to having one-quarter the RAM, one-quarter the hard disk capacity, a lousier video card, an older chipset which uses DDR2 among other things, lacking wireless-n, lacking HDMI out, lacking Windows 7 and lacking a webcam, BUT it does have a 16:10 screen judging by the 1280x800 resolution. So yeah, the neg is completely unwarranted for this deal.

Regarding CoTD's delivery time - my most expensive purchase from them, an Asus netbook, took less than a week to get to me. For my other previous orders one of which included a small adjustable table definitely didn't take any longer than two weeks to get to me either.

        • Have some of you forgotten that CoTD are dishonest?

          Read their horror stories: http://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/store:catchoftheday.com.au#…

Don't let yourself become the catch of the day!

          • @Profiteer: They sell millions of items a year so i'm not surprised that a few transactions go awry. I however have made over 20 purchases from COTD in the last couple of years and have never had an issue.

    • A HP laptop. Right..

    • similar specs (slightly inferior graphics) for $770 from acer

    http://www.citysoftware.com.au/Acer_Extensa_5635Z-434G32MN_-Dual_Core_T4300_2_1GHz-15_6_inch_ACN1638.aspx

    • a 4500HD is much inferior to a 230M!

    • +1

      Not even close.

Firstly, 15" are generally cheaper for the specs and in this instance, you will certainly get what you pay for in an Acer.

This Acer is 4.0kg. -> Please explain how this is similar to the above Sony @2.3kg? Almost twice the weight, not to mention gfx is heaps better (not Slightly):
      http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Graphics-Cards-Benchmark…

      230M is ranked 59
      4500M is ranked 165

100 places is not even close.

      • The Acer laptop weight is 2.5KG (see acer website), Citysoftware includes the weight with the packaging for the purpose of calculating shipping (when approprite).

Citysoftware also gives 3% cash certificates with their smartbuy offer (works out to < $750). I picked one up yesterday (no wait) for my son and NOT everyone requires the high performance graphics on their laptop, when there is PS3s and WIIs to do it - but happy to take the $250!

But then all of them are sold out, have to wait for the next bargain :(

PS: I have no connection with Citysoftware

  • This item is inferior in price/performance and is last generation compared to current generation Sony CW from the United States.

    • +1

But at what price points? That's what it's all about.

    • that is applicable to every single laptop here in australia!

  • it seems that the battery of this is a pain…also getting hot very soon if you play games
