Unlocked Google Nexus One Android 2.1 by HTC

Be the first to own this phone in Australia!

Have a look at the wiki on whirlpool for info about getting one yourself rather than from 1saleDay. You could save yourself $125, but you need to have some good proxy foo and there are many steps in the process…

http://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/?tag=Google_Phone

Also I wouldn't expect them to have a lot of stock so get it sooner rather than later, but be aware you are paying a premium price here for convenience.

This is cut 'n paste from 1saleDay…
The Nexus One features a 3.7in AMOLED display, with a 800x480 resolution. The screen has a 100,000:1 contrast ratio and a response time of 1ms. It has an illuminated trackball which can emit different colors of light based on the type of notification being received. The phone has two microphones, one on the front and one on the back, to enable noise cancellation to reduce background noise during phone conversations. A standard 3.5 mm headphone jack is also provided.

The phone features a 1 GHz Qualcomm 8250 processor, 512 MB of RAM, a 4 GB microSD card, 512 MB of internal Flash storage, a 5MP auto-focus camera with LED flash and digital zoom, GPS receiver, light and proximity sensors, Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR, and 802.11b/g/n Wifi capabilities. It provides hardware decoding for H.263, H.264 and MPEG-4 video, and is capable of playing MP3, AAC+, Ogg Vorbis, WAV, and MIDI audio, and displaying the JPEG, GIF, PNG, and BMP image formats. It has a standard micro USB port rather than the proprietary HTC connector, and the microSD card slot allows expansion up to 32 gigabytes of card storage. Applications can only be installed to the 512MB internal flash memory, of which 190MB are available for that purpose. During unveiling, it was mentioned that Google might eventually lift this restriction after addressing security issues.

The phone weighs 130 grams (4.6 oz), with a height of 119 millimetres (4.7 in), a width of 59.8 millimetres (2.35 in), and a depth of 11.5 millimetres (0.45 in). It is powered by a removable 1400 mAh battery, expected to last up to 290 hours on standby, 10 hours talk time, or 5 hours while browsing the internet.

  • I have ordered one of these directly from google myself, and it is a bit of a nightmare to get hold of one to be honest. Mine worked out at $700 even, but a load of hassle. eBay prices are similar or more than this. Cheapest you can get them for directly is around $685 depending on the exchange rate, and that is a big big hassle to do.

      • +6

Yeah, different as in it isn't a mini-dictatorship. I just hate the way everything is so locked down and restricted by apple. I agree that for most people the iPhone is a good option. But for people who like to tinker and not be restricted in any way shape of form, the Nexus One is by far the best mobile computing platform available right now.

        • +1

you mean Android is by far the best mobile computing platform available right now.

there are many other phones running Android, Nexus one is only one of them

          • +1

@uraha: Well yes and no. I was also including the hardware in that statement. I mean where is the removable battery on the iPhone? the memory card slot? the 5MP decent camera? the camera flash? the lack of gaudy plastic? Those things have been around on phones for ages, but no-one has put them all together in an iPhone beating size with a decent OS until now.

            • @stumo: milestone/droid?

              • +1

@rodh: the milestone/droid runs a slower processor, and isn't running android 2.1 yet.
And it isn't AMOLED either. All +1 for the Nexus One.

iPhones also don't multitask. Imagine what happens when you're navigating with the GPS while driving, and a call comes in. Or you want to surf the net or check emails while staying on MSN.

Or maybe you just want to set a custom SMS/email ringtone (!).

Or change the default browser. Or email client. Or keyboard. Or don't like notifications intrusively popping up all the time.

etc etc blablabla. There's a phone for everyone, the iPhone isn't for everyone. Unless they're clueless and got sucked in by the hype. Whatever happened to "Think Different"?

            • -1

@stumo: If you think the Nexus is "iPhone beating" you're living on another planet. Come back to reality.

              • @OzzyBrak: The actual quote is "iPhone beating size".

Only way ill consider upgrading to google phone from iphone is if u can use multiple apps and once and able to replace the battery easily…

    • +1

Umm yeah - you can do bot those things Gavman.

      Non-replaceable battery … no multi-tasking … that's only an apple thing!!

Android is an awesome mobile OS. Nexus One seems a great phone … just be aware that since Android is just beginning to flourish, the next "best Android phone" is probably only a few months away at most. But that said … you have to buy at some point!

    • Consider yourself a switcher then!
I suspect Apple will be forced to use Mutitasking in iPhone 4, I doubt they'll ever include a removeable battery and memory card slot though.. that'd eat into their profit margins too much.
(I'm a mac user too, just not a complete fanboy)

    • -1

      upgrading???

  • Too bad none of these new phones have dual sim.

  • -6

Anyone realise that the new Iphone 4g is looking like it may be released in April(instead of June)?

Also the rumored specs are quite likely to be true:
    removable battery,
    5-megapixel camera,
    LED Flash,
    Full metal case,
    Touch sensitive case,
    Front facing video camera,
    Contacts on home screen,
    Portable DVR functionality w/HD Video,
    OLED display,
    64GB NAND flash memory,
2Ghz ARM Cortex A9 dual core processor,
    PowerVR SGX545 graphic chip ,
    more RAM memory,
    Built-in RFID

Those specs if even somewhat true would beat the nexxus hands down, performance wise.

Jan 27th may be the day Apple tells all regarding specs etc.

    • +9

lol will believe it when I see it. They will properly just add a flash to it and add more restrictions.

    • +2

      "Tell him he's dreaming".

It won't have all that, I know that now! You've basically described a dream phone, which would probably cost about 2 grand!

It also doesn't change the fact that people who like these androids like open phones that they can do what they want with.

    • +2

If by "quite likely to be true", you mean "NFI", then yes, exactly.

If Apple releases an iphone with a removable battery, I'll happily eat my words. They're even moving towards built-in batteries on their macbook line.

Removable battery, 5mp camera w/ flash, video chat and front facing video — welcome to 2-3 years ago. While it sounds nice to tout "DVR functionality", I think you're forgetting who you're dealing with - if it has real DVR capabilities (and I don't mean recording straight off the camera source), then it's going to have DRM written all over it. G/l with that though.

Do I think the iphone is a good phone? Yep. I also think that Apple milks the absolute shit out of their products — releasing "features" that should've been included in their first release a year or more later. As has been stated, prepare for a price hike if you think you're getting all of those features.

    • Yes those things have been rumoured.. but most are just just I suspect.
      You're likely to see
      5-megapixel camera,
      LED Flash,
(no surprises there.. my 2 year old Nokia has those, actually it has a far better Xenon Flash)
OLED display, (or at minimum improved resolution LCD)
64GB NAND flash memory, (32Gb and 16Gb options will probably remain as with the 3G-3GS update)
      PowerVR SGX545 graphic chip
Touch sensitive case, (this is where you start to get a bit dreamy.. it sounds like a good idea and MIGHT happen)

Oh and release date will be June-ish like other iPhone launches.

      • isn't the release this year supposed to be a tablet? There hasn't been a great deal of "new iphone" rumors this time around

        • There's iPhone 4 rumours too. Even the suggestion that the upcoming January Apple Announcement will include iPhone 4 along with the tablet.
The tablet has been rumoured to run a modified iPhone OS.

    • rumours are rumours buddy. no one buys a phone based on what it MIGHT have, they buy according to what's available.

  • +1

ooo 2ghz dual core processor..sounds faster than a netbook =P.

  • +2

sux how it doesn't have multitouch!

    • -1

Software OS no mutisupport due to apple's patent on mutitouch software (so selfish)

BUT the hardware itself DOES support mutitouch. Get programs from the FREE market aps and you can use mutitouch.

eg. Dolphin browser supports mutitouch and works on the Nexus

    • I thought it did have.. or at least can have with hacking.

      • not really. if Downloading Dolphin browser from the FREE market is hacking then yea I guess.

Im sure there are heaps of other aps which allow mutitouch etc out there which again I say is FREE

    • Yeah as stated it does have multitouch, just not on the google supplied apps. This is because of Apple and their extremely litigious business model. And this is also the reason why I have never, and will never buy an Apple product (well, apart from the naff styling, lack of features, and silly restrictions on their heavily locked down products).

Nintendo is another one, can you imagine if you could get something like a PS3 with remote style motion controllers/games like on the Wii?

This business model stifles tech progression, and ultimately restricts all of us. The sooner these 2 dinosaurs are relegated to the past the better.

      • You wont have to imagine.. Sony are releasing motion control this year..

Don't buy Apple products cause they're locked down, too expensive or just don't do it for you but get off the high horse with the Litigious Business Model concept!

All companies are litigious when it come to protecting their patents, doesn't matter who you look at! It's par for the course. Required, in fact, to maintain the integrity of the patent!
Argue all you like about the merits of Patents, but don't blame the companies following the rules!

        • Well we could have all had motion control 10 years ago if it weren't for nintendo. And as for my high horse, I hope it is a big horse with room for lots of people, because the press is littered with instances of apple suing over very minor things. eg. with the new woolworths logo recently.

Yes all companies are litigious, but some companies are more litigious than others.

          • @stumo: I think Apple just gets lots of publicity…
The Woolies logo case is all about showing that they're protecting the Apple logo it's a Trademark dispute not a Patent dispute..
With Woolies now a carrier in the Mobile phone market, there is some business crossover between the 2. If Woolies chose to release a Woolies handset, there'd be even more crossover and potentially confusion in the marketplace given that the Apple is vaguely similar.
99% of any Apple litigation is for show, to demonstrate that they're protecting their assets, namely their ideas and branding, which is what Apple trades heavily on.

I don't think either MS or Sony were interested in what they considered to be a "small, toy" games market that the Wii targets, that's what held up motion control for so long on their platforms.
I'm unaware of any legal action or threats of action brought by Nintendo against MS or Sony with regard to motion control in gaming systems.

  • Based on http://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/?tag=Google_Phone these prices seem competitive but not exceptional. Am I missing something?

  • -1

    Not a bargain.

Dont forget "Delivery time: 5-10 days"

I wonder how they go about ordering it? Since google limit each google acount to 5 phones.
Must have have HEAPS of friends in the US. Wonder if they will have similar issues like what price usa have.

    • +1

And this is precisely why it is kind of a bargain. I'd kill for 5-10 days now. But I have already ordered my on the 14th, and it is now the 21st and it is still stuck in LA since the 18th according to the USD $54 DHL express shipping I used!!!!

I think the $75 to $140 premium you are paying on this deal is worth it.

  • It's around $670 delivered if you buy via http://www.priceusa.com.au/

If you click on last 100 orders, you can see someone has recently bought one for "US$570.69 + $37.75 shipping"

    • You will also notice that - http://www.priceusa.com.au/news/

"Update: Because of the trouble my agent is having getting this phone I will not be taking any new order until further notice."

      • Sounds like they're waiting to see if there are any issues with the last 16 phones before taking any more orders. Thanks for pointing that out, and I appologies for giving any immediate false hope to ozbargainers :)

        • With the limits placed on credit cards and orders per google account.
ie. google limiting to 5 per credit card I dont find it viable for companies to order heaps of stock.

          • +2

@Turd: Well 1SaleDay is selling them, they haven't sold out yet so surely this should be more about the deal rather than your thoughts on how many they can procure.

        • No, I've been following the whirlpool thread, and priceUSA have just screwed up basically. They continued to take loads of orders, even though they were locked out of getting hold of any more phones from Google. People were paying well over $700 and ordering on the day these released, over 2 weeks ago, and they are still waiting for their phones.

  • I jizzed.

I'm posting this without reading th rest of the posts here, but won't Google be releasing this to Australia for around $200 less in a short time?

    • Maybe, maybe not. Nothing has been announced yet. For all we know they could skip Australia altogether with this model.

If you wait for it to be released locally there will be some newer and more fantastic phone on the horizon that everybody will be holding out for.

    • +1

Vodafone have confirmed worldwide support for the phone, but how long till it gets here, who knows?

Personally I'd be waiting too, but then again, I'm still in contract.

      • I'm still in contract too.. But that hasn't stopped me changing phones twice in the last year.

If the price is right, I'll be getting a Nexus One!

  • for me, i never buy a new product. wait for 6 months, u will see cheaper price or new model with fixed bugs etc etc
newest model always full of bug and experimental only.

  • I just bought a HTC Hero, damn it

  • -1

i've been reading up about these. Anyone planning on useing this phone on Next G dont buy it as it doesn't work on that network. Also there is a new one being released in Feb/Apr called the HTC Bravo/Passion which will work and will probably be a better phone.

Seen them on ebay sell for $550.

      GSM/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz)

Telstra "NextG" operates on the 850Mhz frequency, right?

Also, a lot of phones such as my HTC Touch Diamond were updated to support NextG with a ROM update. So don't be so quick to judge.

You do know the HTC Bravo is EXACTLY the same phone right? With a different casing & a couple of extra buttons.

I have also seen them on Ebay for $550 from people with ZERO feedback. :/

      • NextG is 850MHz HSPA..
850 GSM/EDGE is 2G/2.5G only so Xandak is correct, the Nexus One is not NextG compatible.
And a ROM update will not and can not alter the capabilities of the hardware in the radio. Nexus One will NEVER support NextG..

HTC Bravo is being touted as very similar to Nexus One.
        http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/20/htc-bravo-gettin-overexpo…
But no-one knows for sure yet.

        • If you look at the tech specs of the HTC Diamond;
          http://www.htc.com/www/product/touchdiamond/specification.ht…

You'll see there's also no mention of the hardly used, Telsta NextG freq, but I'm sitting here with a HTC phone which features "850Mhz HSPA" after I updated the radio. You can never, say never, in this game.

The specs for the Bravo are identical, the dimensions, screen etc etc. All seem remarkably the same to me and many others.

          • @Koonit: Clearly the HTC Touch Diamond had a 850MHz capable radio chip in it but for whatever reason support for that element was not activated in software.
If the nexux One shares the same radio chip as the Touch Diamond it may be possible to do similar for the Nexus One.
850 support was possibly disabled due to an exclusivity agreement between a carrier and HTC.
Google has no such arrangement so has no reason to disable any hardware functionality. it's likely that the Nexus One has a Radio chip only capable of 900MHz HSPA.

Please don't buy this phone expecting the possibility of a NextG upgrade cause it is highly unlikely to never happen.
Note: it will work on the Telstra/3 2100MHz 3G towers in Metro areas, but not in country areas.

  • -1

    negged.

Can get it cheeeper.. way cheeper

    • In 5-10 days? With a single click? Local company for warranty? No risk of having your google account locked? no.

      • Yes in 5-10 days, Obviously requires more then 1 click as we are bargain hunters and not lazy. Warranty you can just send to US.

In other words, you can save 200$ if you order this yourself. Check out the whirpool thread for more details…

        • Please provide a link to the WP post/info where someone has landed this phone for $600. Or maybe you could just post your piece of fiction up there too and then link it from here, job done.

FYI The cheapest you could ever possibly get it is US$529 or around AU$585 direct from google, but you would need to get it flown from Oregon (no sales tax) in the US to here for free by a friend or by yourself. So how do you get it here for only $15? please share.

    • Ok then, if so WHERE?

Tell us how we can get it "way cheeper"

  • Shoppingsquare doing the same price with no postage.
They seem to be doing as a preorder

    • Yes they will all be price matching now. 1SaleDay were the first locals to lower the price this side of $900. And pre-order, no thanks this thing has been available for well over 2 weeks now.

      • I cant say 5-10day deliver is not a pre-order.

  • Can be cheaper if you want to use a mail forwarding service and buying direct from Google. There are plenty of mail forwarding service such as PriceUSA. Even using PriceUSA, who isn't the cheapest provider, still ends up cheaper than 1SaleADay.

    • I didn't say you can't get it cheaper. But note that PriceUSA aren't talking any more orders, and they can't even fill the orders they have already taken.

If you do want it cheaper I can recommend comGateway. Look in the whirlpool wiki link at the top for more info. But you won't be getting it in 5-10 days.

  • Check the below site for a comprehensive review & detailed report on this phones capability/usability.
    http://www.gsmarena.com/htc_google_nexus_one-3069.php

This site, I think, has the best information & reviews for just about every mobile phone ever conceived on the planet.

  • not really cheap compare to using comGateway.

  • This is NOT a bargain at all, but the easiest you can get the Nexus One.
Asked a friend in Hong Kong to order one directly from Google and then send it to Australia. Way cheaper than this.

    • Good luck with HK, I have read on whirlpool about people being stung with a $150 tax bill when it arrives there. And then DHL HK refusing to ship it out because it has a battery!

      • don't use a branded courier, use EMS. No tax when it arrives.

        • But please make sure you fully insure it too. Someone on the 'pool had a consignment of 5 phones stolen when shipped via USPS, and they didn't take out insurance! The boxes were tampered with and arrived here empty.

          • @stumo: Oh man, that sucks. Question is, how did they purchase 5 phones in one shipment.. :/

            • @Koonit: They had them sent individually to a friend in the states (free local shipping from Google). Then the friend sent them on via USPS, only when the boxes arrived they were each 150grams lighter than the label said, and the boxes had been tampered with.

              • @stumo: More details:

He bought 5 phones (the google limit) sent it to friend address.
His friend sent 2 in one box and sent it to Australia to a different address using one USPS office in one location.
Send another 2 in one box and sent it to a DIFFERENT Australia address using A Different USPS office in a different location.
Finally sent 1 in one box to yet ANOTHER Australian address using yet another USPS post office in yet a different location.

End result all phones were stolen.

                • @Turd: That is the most complicated and mixed story I've ever heard. Did they also say in big writing on the boxes "Googles new phone. Not insured, please don't steal me"

                  :P

                  • @Koonit: Well im not surprised that someone in the "system" took them. Seeing 100 of packages everyday of the same size all with the labels "MAY CONTAIN DANGEROUS GOODS ie. Batteries Inside"

If you knew that one of them is not insured and not trackable you'd definately be on the clear in taking it.

But I agree sounds very fishy and dodgy, but Aus Post have a 97% garentee rate so probably that 3% is acceptable loss.

      • A lot of courier companies have a similar policy (even AusPost now — road only transport) regarding shipping batteries. The easiest thing to do is just put it inside a box and they're none the wiser.

        • Yeah, trouble is google put a label on the shipping box saying it has a battery.

Like I keep saying… there are many traps for young players if you want to go down that route and save yourself up to $125 (and can wait).

          • @stumo: … which is why I said to rebox it yourself.

        • Isnt that false declaration? So when it blows up in your(mail handlers) face you'll be liable for damages.

          • @Turd: Yeah, because it's quite a frequent occurrence that batteries blow up and all.

            • @pais: Then why did they put that stupid rule out?

              • @Turd: There has been instances where things have caught fire. Common sense applies — if you wrap everything correctly, this will not happen. I can't even think of the number of laptops/netbooks I've shipped without issue.

                • @pais: Dell's main business model would collapse to the ground if shipping laptops with batteries quickly was very dangerous.

And if a courier got burned up by a laptop battery, we would definitely hear about it. But even though Dell and others sell millions and millions of laptops via mail, there hasn't been a single incident.

                  • @eug: From what I undetstand, the exploding batteries only happened when they were under stress. IE; charging or running extremely hot and that heat transfered from internal components into the battery.

      • +1

I use EMS and it's fine. It is under $1000 and you don't need to pay any import tax.

        • What about the tax from USA -> HK? ie. the ones that HK charges (if any)? I dont know as I do not live in HK.

          • @Turd: As far as I'm aware, import duties are only applicable on certain goods (i.e. tobacco, alcohol, etc.), and they don't have import taxes (or anything tantamount to GST) that's applied.

            • @pais: nbn is right, anything over a marked value of $1000 will incur import tax.

              • @Koonit: Yes - in Australia.. Turd's question is pertinent to HK customs/importation laws.

                • @pais: Well this is a silly place to ask a question about HKs tax system isn't it! :)

  • Mods, how do I put bold text in the deal?

Seems people are missing reading that first few lines. It says there you can get it cheaper, but those options require more skills than most people have, and a bit of risk included, and many more hoops to jump through.

This is a good bargain for anyone who wants it in 5-10 days with a few clicks of their mouse.

    • You can use the hash key:
