  • For comparison, anyone know how much the whole pack would be in shops?

    • Expect at least probably $40 in shops. I know they were selling the gold edition (just the first 2) for $30 at jbhifi before.

The benefit of the Steam version is that it does all the downloading and patching for you. Buy the retail version and you're going to have to install 1 patch at a time (1GB+ of patches you'll have to download).

  • Whats online play like? And what do most people play.. ie do I need the addons for decent online play?

    Thanks

    • +1

Online play is where the game is at. Definitely the best part of the game. The first game includes the American and Wehrmacht armies and an American campaign. Opposing Fronts includes the British and Panzer Elite armies and a campaign for each. Tales of Valor is a pretty poor expansion in comparison as it has no new factions but introduces a few new vehicles along with some short campaigns.

You can play online with everyone regardless of which ones you own as all games share the same game files (just that you can't access the features of the games you don't own). The first 2 games are essential but Tales of Valor can be passed if you don't want to spend the money.

Thanks for the reply! I will grab the first 2. $7.00US bargain.

        • How many gbs did Original + Opposing Fronts take to download?

          • @donnytuco: About 8gbs I imagine. All 3 games share the same game files and you need to download ALL the game files even if you only have the first game. This is so that you can play online with others who may have all the games.

Damn steam and their sales… I'm buying games quicker than I can play them! Not to mention keeping my data cap at its limits! :) Anyway, what's single play like? (I'm unlikely to play online.)

    • +1

who are you with? If you are with many ISP's you can setup steam to download quota free.

      • TPG - I've never seen anyone say you can get free Steam downloads with them, but then again I haven't actually researched it either! :)

      • can this be done with optusnet?

      • yup, you can also prevent Steam from downloading via other mirrors with a tool like Freys: http://members.iinet.net.au/~chapman.j/

        • how i downloaded war in conflict and it used all my dls??

    • +1

Single player is very fun too. You can download the demo on Steam to try it out if you want. I think it's about 1.5gbs.

  • Just to let everyone know - ToV is the best value since ToV includes all 4 armies. You won't be able to play the original and OF campaigns but you will be able to use all 4 factions in MP.

Sucks as I just bought the Anthology edition from EB games a fortnight ago for $35!

Well the first 2 games or ToV = same price. The first 2 games will give you all 4 armies and their campaigns. I'd personally still go for the original 2 games unless you want the game purely for MP. ToV only adds a few units anyway which are more or less just alternatives to pre-existing units from the first 2 games.

  • Don't forget the new gamemodes too…

plus if you don't get ToV you can't spam Roo carriers as brits! :)

    • +1

Yeah the gamemodes in ToV are good fun. Seeing its cheap, i wouldn't miss out on the full pack. Having every unit, map and gametype available for lan or online is worthwhile.

  • Very good RTS game, i recommend it

This is a great game - visually outstanding and the gameplay mechanics are top notch.

I'm a competitive COH player (level 12 all armies) and this is a fun game but if you expect Starcraft like balance then you may want to reconsider. Panzer Elite army is vastly underpowered, there are some overpowered mechanics in the Wehrmacht and American armies (but still ok) and the British army is plain broken and vastly hated and loathed by the competitive community. Really the only good match up is the US vs Wehrmacht match up, or any team game without the broken British army.

The additional game modes are horribly balanced and banal - really the only great game modes are the classic army vs army matches (ranked is best) and the singleplayer campaigns are a decent experience.

However this is a cheap price for hours of fun so I'd recommend it for any casual RTS player :)

    • Agree. The British are annoying because of artillery spam and the American's higher rate of income and cheaper priced units can make it hard at the beginning if you're versing them. I only usually play as the Wehrmacht or Panzer Elite because I find them more enjoyable.

  • how does online work? Does it have a matchmaking system etc?

    • There's a list of lobbys which you can join or you can make your own lobby and wait for people to join. Of course there's a filter so you can choose what game modes you want to play or levels of other people you want to play with.

    • Yes you connect to Relic Online (even if you want to play singleplayer).

Of the classic game types you can choose to play competitively (ranked ladder games) or for fun (unranked basic matches).

Ranked games will put you against opponents of similar skill. Ranked games are always Victory Point 500 games. You need to contest (usually) 3 Victory Points, if you hold more than the opponent, you drain their victory counter which starts off at 500. Whoever reaches 0 first loses, or whoever's base is completely destroyed loses.

Unranked games - you set up a lobby and anyone can join, and you can choose the game modes (VP250, VP500, VP1000 or Annihilation).

Then there are the 3 new game modes (Panzerkrieg, Assault, some defensive one). There's only 1-2 maps per game mode so it gets old fast. Balance is non-existent and gets boring fast due to lack of variety of units and maps.

  • If you buy from the UK store, you can get CoH gold (First 2) for 3.75GBP (under 7 aud) and ToV is 2.5gbp (5 aud). Comes to total under 12 AUD for everything.

    • Sounds good.. but when you go to purchase it says "Your billing address doesn’t look like it matches up with your current country. Please contact support for assistance or use a payment method registered to your current address.". What is the best way to overcome this?

      • +1

Should have added that , sorry: Just change your country to UK and you should be set.

    • Ah yes should have mentioned this. But you can only do this with a credit card and not all credit cards may work.

  • Gotta love unmetered steam! :)

    • what ISP are you with that gives you unmetered Steam?

      • I know Adam do it, Internode do it, Bigpond do it, westnet/iinet do it.

Best to use the steam filter mentioned above though. If you have vista/7 you can use resource monitor to check what hosts steam is connecting to to make sure its working.

  • ARGH sooo many steam games!!!!
I have bought so many games over the past few weeks with their crazy deals.
Awesome prices with the satisfaction of owning them legit.

    • lol same, if all companies didnt charge ridiculous prices of $74 - $100+ for a game id go legit with them all. i mean the cost of producing a dvd cant be $50 worth as opposed to hosting an expensive server for u to download from. i figured id pay the cheap price and dl it faster than bittorrent and be able to play online. everybody wins!

now make mw2 $10 as well steam! lol

      • I think we are starting to see more and more software/games produced with high volume/low price in mind - just look at the app store on iphone and of course steam (mostly old games are cheap atm though).

In the case of the iphone GTA chinatown wars came out this week for $12, considering its a full port of the DS/PSP version which retail for $40+, thats a pretty good price. No doubt Rockstar know that they can sell 10 times as many copies at the $12 price point than if it was $40 so they are still way ahead.

  • Can i just buy opposing fronts? It is an 'expansion' but im thinking I might be able to buy just that, anyone know?

    • It is a standalone expansion so yes you can buy it on its own but you will only be able to use 2 of the 4 armies and play 2 of the 6 or so campaigns.

  • Great deal from Steam. I downloaded this last night - 7.7 gigs. I noticed that downloads were switching between mirrors - Freezone (3FL) and my peak quota on iinet. Downloaded Frey's tool (as posted by Radar above: http://members.iinet.net.au/~chapman.j/) and the rest downloaded as part of my free quota without a hitch.

Excellent value deal and nifty little app from Frey.
