AmEx Shop Small - Melbourne List 2015

Please find below a list of Melbourne based Shop Small recommendations I have grouped together for the Melbourne OzBargainers.

I have separated each post into Dining, Food shopping and General shopping and I hope this helps find a lot of new and interesting places.

Please feel free to add more below the relevant post or add a new category as needed.

        • If you wouldn't mind me asking, did Amex eventually credit you for paying the bill? Thanks in advance.

Some places that I have tried for Myki

Southgate News and Lotto ($0.35 surcharge for $20 topup)
South Yarra Newsagency 102 Toorak Rd (There was a sign which said $1 surcharge for AMEX payments however the staff member didn't charge this. Did three $20 topups with three different cards)
The Summit Convenience Store 163 City Rd Southbank (No surcharge)
Melbourne Convenience Store 327 Elizabeth St ($1 Surcharge)
Elizabeth Pharmacy 125 Elizabeth St ($1 surcharge)

    • Great list. I don't use Myki normally but an additional benefit will be the upcoming addition of Myki to the Airport Skybus line. It will still cost you $18 one way but at least with the AmEx deal it will cut the cost down by $10.

  • Amazing lists thanks. I am visiting Melbourne for a couple of days, and plan to do a shop-small-restaurant-crawl in the immediate areas of Southbank, Docklands, Spencer Street areas. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

    • Traditional Italian pizzas - 90 Secondi, next to Etihad Stadium (attached to the NAB building). Costs you $20.50 - made for ShopSmall lunches! :)

Are you interested in food for one person, two or a family? Shopping-wise, what sort of things are you interested in? Also, how many AmEx cards do you collectively have? How many meals do you need to plan for? Any food preferenecs?

Sorry for the 20 questions but it helps with working out an itinerary.

Personally I'd make sure I get/do the following:

      1. Shop in the CBD at Emporium/Myer area:

EMPORIUM SC GIFT CARD - 287 LONSDALE STREET, MELBOURNE, AU 3000 <— shop with that at Emporium(also works at Myer City) or get cheap snacks at the food court

      2. Have a Dumpling experience at either (go to Hu Tong if you are from Sydney):

DIN TAI FUNG - SHOP M0002 287 LONSDALE ST, MELBOURNE, VICTORIA 3000 OR
HU TONG DUMPLING BAR - 14 MARKET LANE, MELBOURNE, VIC 3000

      3. Enjoy a steak at either (both close to Spencer Street Station):

RARE STEAKHOUSE KING STREET - 42-44 KING ST, MELBOURNE, VICTORIA 3000
SQUIRES LOFT CITY STEAKHOUSE - 12 GOLDIE PL, MELBOURNE, VICTORIA 3000

      4. Have a nice sit on the sidewalk lunch at:

LEFTBANK RIGHT PL - 1 SOUTHBANK BVD, SOUTHBANK, VICTORIA 3006

      5. Visit Docklands and try out:

      90 SECONDI - SHOP 1A 700 BOURKE ST, DOCKLANDS, VICTORIA 3008
BYBLOS BAR & RESTAURANT - 18-38 SIDDELEY ST, DOCKLANDS, VIC 3008
ELEMENTS VIC HARBOUR - 833 COLLINS ST, DOCKLANDS, VICTORIA 3008
STEAKHOUSE GRILL - 66 NEW KEY PROMENADE, DOCKLANDS, VICTORIA 3008
THE JAMES HOTEL - 16-17 439 DOCKLANDS DR, DOCKLANDS, VICTORIA 3008

Can't think of much else right now but there are heaps of places to check out in the CBD even though that is not on your radar.

      • Great thanks for all of the effort.

  • I am finding the Amex Shop Small site really hard to navigate and search. Not sure if its me but its slow and can only see ten listings at a time? Live in the Eastern suburbs, Knox, Boronia, Lilydale Croydon - does anyone have a comprehensive list for those sort of areas. Last night got 2 x $10 credits at Pescare Restaurant in Glen Waverley by splitting the bill but was also charge 2.5% on each transaction….Believe Fast Fuel in Wantirna also accepts Amex but again will charge 2.5%
Thanks in advance for your help

    • It IS hard to use.
An important thing is to understand how it appears to work and, that is, that the location that you put in is key. The sequence of the listings, (yes, 10 at a time), seem to be based on the location entered with the first listed the closest.

I would suggest that you select a location for each suburb that you are interested in. Also, try using the (limited) filter feature once you have entered the location.

  • Any hardware stores in CBD or south which take Amex and are part of Shop Small? Is Pen's in Caulfield one of those?

I have found a couple of great restaurants + a pharmacy.

    Melbourne CBD

    • Takumi (Japanese Restaurant): 32 Bourke St, Melbourne VIC 3000 (no surcharge but there was a minimum spending which was $20 if I remember correctly).
It's one of my favourite lunch spot in the city. Price is very reasonable. It gets busy after 12:40ish. So it's better to make a booking or get there early.

    • Nova Pharmacy at collins place (no surcharge but the minimum spending is $30 for amex)
I think they are cheaper than other pharmacies nearby. But it's a shame that they have $30 minimum spending.

    South Yarra

    • Subi Q (Korean Restaurant): 407 Malvern Road, South Yarra VIC 3141 (no surcharge + no minimum).
Subi Q was a great finding. It has to be one of the best Korean restaurant in Melbourne. It's a small family owned business and they serve really great food. It seems like they only open for dinner from Thursday to Sunday (closed on Mon-Wed). The staff said they didn't know about the shop small and recently joined. They didn't have shop small stickers on the window when I went there but I got my email + $10.
  • Did not expect it but just received $10 credit from the Arndale Chemart chemist in Croydon

  • A new addition for Fuel

Dayef - 473 Upper Heidelberg Rd, Heidelberg Heights VIC 3081

  • Damn. I love that this list is still up to date. 😄

    • Updated Myki places from this promotion are now in the wiki + a new map.

      EMPORIUM SC GIFT CARD

      Not on the list anymore.

  • I have some further news and a few questions if I may.

    First

    GAMI CHICKEN

    need I say more?

    I found Gami chicken at

    GAMI
    840 Glenferrie Road , Hawthorn VICTORIA 3122

on the map. I've never tried it but have heard good reports.

That aside here are the questions

    1. What service stations in Melbourne have been confirmed in 2016?
    2. Are there any online stores that one can use as part of the Shopsmall promotion?
    3. What gift cards can one buy using Shopsmall?

    Thanking you
