I will update the thread as comment come in.

If you know of any shops that accepted AMEX last year, feel free to post in the comments.

and whether they charge a surcharge

most of the convenient stores (ezy mart, 7 eleven) in Sydney cbd accept amex, but have a 50c to $2 dollar surcharge

one of the old topics had a pretty good list

    here it is

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/168362

    • Also as I recall, 7-Eleven weren't part of Shop Small last year. City Convenience stores mostly were - they were where I did most of my Opal top-ups.

Not sure if that will change this year.

      • 7-Eleven was! I topped up my Opal from there with two AmEX in the city.

Based on that, I went to fill up$20 petrol from 7 Eleven last night and got nuffin!

    • On the small business FAQ, I didn't think they were allowed to charge a surcharge, here is what on the AMEX site for qualified small business:

      b) Do not differentially surcharge American Express Card Members or discourage American Express Card Members from using American Express Cards; and

      • They're not always going to know that. I got a credit at a bar last night that had 3% surcharge.

  • +2

Should we add - independent petrol stations that take Amex to this list?

    • This list is specifically for Myki - do said servos do Myki recharges?

  • Melbourne from 2014:

$20 452 Little Collins St (Daily news) $20 Top up, $10 cash back - they may have stopped this

$20.60 at Swanston St Lotto, 227 Collins st (Shop 3) - $20 Myki money, $10 cash back

$20 at Essendon Pharmacy 1049 Mt Alexander Rd - $20 Myki money, $10 cash back

  • Petrol Melbourne - liberty servo, 263 Ballarat Rd towards sunshine

    Liberty 151 Victoria parade fitzroy

Liberty 155 Epsom Rd Ascot Vale

The list goes on. Fill up $20, get ten back

    • Are you sure on these petrol station, I tried to look for petrol station on there map and I couldn't find any.

      • +1

Found them on the map - search for Liberty. Confirmed on google maps. I haven't filled up there yet though.

        • I filled up at the Victoria Pde Fitzroy servo, paid w Amex (tap n go), no confirmation email. Also, it wasn't listed on the Shop Small map, neither under Fitzroy nor under 'Liberty'. Not sure why you've referenced Google maps as I don't think this has anything to do with it.

        • @JJlikes2eat: I can 100% confirm that my card worked here - insert and PIN

        • @psionix: thanks. Not sure if tap n go or insert/pin makes a difference. I should see this on my statement eventually

    • Also, is it each individual or if you use it in 1 shop you can't use it in another?

      • good question, I will confirm once I use the same card at more than one Liberty

  • +1

Metro Lane Cove - 533 Mowbray Rd, Lane Cove North

    • Petrol that is.

      • Is there a surcharge?

        • I don't recall. I'll report back after I try it again this time.

        • There is apparently a 2% surcharge for Amex. However in 3 visits so far I have only been charged the surcharge once.

  • +1

What about go card recharges in QLD?

      Agree. Here's some:

@brazen00: Thanks for the info. I have included it into a new wiki I created: Amex Shop Small Guide

      • I can confirm $10 back from each of these.
George St news no surcharge. PO Square 55c
(ladies at George St would be worth a surcharge, but none charged)

        • Different experience here. Nothing mentioned or charged at George St, sign at PO Square said 2.75% but I didn't say "Amex" and he didn't charge me anything.

And definitely got the $10 at both.

"love a bargain" posted up a spreadsheet on their OneDrive last time, but link doesn't work any more.

Maybe somebody should resurrect it again, or using Google Docs…

There's still this list in the OP:
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/168362

  • Do i need to top up opal cards at $10 intervals at these retailers? Or can I top up say $23.50 or $24

    • +1

      Yes $10 intervals only.

  • Any place near Caulfield, VIC to top up a myki?

  • +1

Bankstown: Old Town Plaza Newsagency (Opposite to 7 Eleven - near the train station)

^I know where I am going now for lunch on Sunday, Pho Ann Bankstown :D

    • Went there this morning - was charged a 50c surcharge but after she processed it saw it was AMEX she asked/demanded another $2 from me saying if she knew it was AMEX she wouldn't have done it (despite me handing her my card which she insert herself into the machine…..) as they charge her 6% transaction fee - I had no cash on me so she had to let it go.

Did get the e-mail afterwards though so all good there.

  • $20.20 (0.20 surcharge for CC) for Myki top up at Southgate Newagency - inside Southgate precinct near the IBM and Herald Sun towers.

    • Please confirm if you get the email.

      • Pretty sure I did get one last year, unfortunately none this year, so maybe this place is not part of Shop Small after all :(

        • The surcharge is what makes me wonder - did you tap and go?

        • @JohnHowardsEyebrows:

Nope there is no tap and go option, used chip on my credit card, but no email as yet

    • +1

I just did a topup at the Southgate newsagency, and the total surcharge was $0.35, and paid using tap and go. I got the email straightaway.

      • Think I know the reason because when I see the receipt it was coming through as a Master card payment, for some reason hence I didn't get the American Express offer, even though I am pretty sure I purchased with an Amex card. They might have applied the wrong surcharge for the card or something. Bummer.

      • I came back from Southgate newsagency, there is a written note on the wall that card will have surcharge. Same as Shortee, I was charged $ 0.2. Still got to wait and see.

    • Success - used across 4 cards $0.35 surcharge

      • Doesn't appear to be part of 14-15 May weekend Shop Small and is now charging 60 cents for an Amex transaction.

  • +4

Here are a list of stores that are participating in the Shop Small promotion and are also Opal retailers:

    • just a question, is it all EzyMart stores or just the opens that appear on the SHOP SMALL webpage, as there are lots of EzyMart stores around Sydney but only a few shown on the website??

      • +1

Not all EzyMart stores. However, the Shop Small map is neither definitive nor comprehensive, i.e. some stores on the map no longer accept AMEX and some stores that aren't on the map are part of the Shop Small promo.

        • So how can you tell before spending $20 + surcharge or do we need ozbargainer to try each one out and confirm/report?

    • I did a search but couldn't find any participating IGA store around Bankstown area. You sure this information is correct?

      • As mentioned above, the Shop Small map is not comprehensive. All IGAs should be part of the promo, but not all IGAs will do Opal.

    • +8

Sorted roughly from Haymarket to Circular Quay:

Retailer name Street address Suburb Surcharge

City Convenience 19-21 Hunter St Sydney $1.50
EzyMart 58 Pitt St Sydney $1.00
      • Hi, thanks for the list - perfect! So did you try different ezymart or city convenience and get separate Cashback for each individual store or are they all treated as 1 Cashback per store chain?

        • +3

Yes, the former. Each EzyMart and City Convenience is an independent store.

        • Perfect - thanks again!

        • Successful top-up at EzyMart 58 Pitt St with a $1 surcharge. Email and cashback received within 48 hours.

        • @fusela:
          Not sure what's happened…
Ezy Mart 58 Pitt St is no longer on the Shop Small map.
Went there yesterday, bought $20 OPAL with $1 surcharge, no email.
Checked the map and it's no longer on there.
Suggest crossing this off the list.

      • +1

As below, add St James Pharmacy, St James Arcade to the list, no surcharge.

        • Can also confirm this. No surcharge for Opal topup (although I'm still waiting for the email).

      • +1

Ezymart 11-23 rawson pl surcharge $1. serve by young lebanese guy. pls update

      • Thanks but just went to 265 Castlereagh St and he said they don't accept Amex at all.

      • +1

Please add to the list -

City Convenience, 155 Sussex street Sydney, Surcharge $1.00 for 2 cards.

Recharged for $40, paid $41.. $21 on first card and $20 on the other.

      • +1

        Convience store
38 Harris st Prymont is now $1 surcharge. served by a lebanese man.
        pls update

        • are shops upping their surcharges because of the promo/demand? amex have a complaint channel for this.

        • I visited there on the 5th and he was very happy to do it for $1. However his machine rejected my Amex card, even with manual swipe and multiple attempts.

      • 22 campbell st not taking amex

        • used amex there this afternoon for Opal top up. $1 surcharge.

        • @scozbargain: so confused. I asked the guy like three times and he just pointed at the sign behind him where he had crossed it out in pen and said no amex

      • 419 Pitt St charged $1.50.

        • The guy asked for $2 at 419 Pitt today. Needless to say I went elsewhere

It seems like they change it daily or something.

        • @prequel2thesequel: Unbelievable. Surcharge cowboys!

      • Thanks - used Wu's Pharmacy (50c) and World Square Newsagency ($1) on Tuesday 24 Nov.

Just a note, Wu's Pharmacy top up hasn't appeared on my Opal though, so I'm chasing it up with Opal and I have the Opal receipt from the transaction.

    • appreciate your list. But e.g. is it means any IGA store? Sydney only have Annadale or Putney on Shopsmall but have you or any tried and confirm this on other IGA store? so many IGA elsewhere we can top up. right?

Example. Harvey Norman Cannington weirdly on list but doubt will class as shopsmall

      • I have not tried any other IGA besides Annandale (and that was last year). As mentioned above, the Shop Small map is not comprehensive.

      • I bought opal at North Sydney IGA about 30min ago but no email still. So it looks like it may not apply to all IGAs?

        • Not getting an email doesn't mean you won't get the $10 credit. 2 out of 3 places I got an email. Received cashback the next day. 3rd place, no email but definitely on the list.

        • I'll suggest go for save bet. only do shop or top-up at the listed store in Shopsmall map even claim the map is not comprehensive.

At least when disputing to amex you are safer to prove the credit if not there

but pls let us update if you received a surprise credit :)

        • Also look for the ShopSmall sign out front or at the counter. If it's there, they'll have a hard time denying you the credit.

        • @ufohunter Any update on this? Did you get your credit for IGA North Sydney?

        • +1

@roughana: No, didn't get any credit from there.

        • I'm thinking some of the IGAs would definitely turn over more than $1.3m / year in Amex transactions, disqualifying them from Shop Small. I'm definitely not game to try Crows Nest IGA for that reason. No idea how big North Sydney IGA is but given its location I'd say it's highly likely it won't be "small".

        • @zzyss: In case you didn't know, emails may not always be sent https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/215492?page=2#comment-3188451.

        • @samlor:

True, but Crows Nest IGA is not listed in the Shop Small map, and they're almost certain to have processed an Amex transaction within the qualifying period (Jul-Oct), since I've used mine there in that time… which leads me to deduce that they don't qualify for Shop Small.

    • Metro Petroleum, Castle Cove don't have Opal top ups.

  • If I recharge opal at two different City Convenience stores will I get 10 dollars off for both or just one? Are different stores of the same chain treated as one store? Thanks.

    • +1

If you know the at least the address of each city convenience store, then look for that on the shop small map. If they turn up individually then $10 off each. If not, likely $10 only at one.

      • +1

Yes they do turn up individually. If anyone tried already please do let know. I will advise after I try it out myself. City Convenience stores seem to be the best option for Opal recharge in Sydney.

        • +1

Just tried City Convinience at 327 George St, first they offered to take amex with a $1 surcharge and when they tried it in their machine it didn't work. One to cross off the list.

        • @fusela:
Thank you for this useful information. I am planning to go to corner Liverpool St/Pitt st where there are one EzyMart and City Con across each other.

  • I called AMEX membership rewards and they told me that we can only get one cashback from one store within the chain such as City Convenience stores and Ezy Marts regardless of their location.

    • This is different to last year

    • +1

That would be party line. They have less control of who gets credits than their t&c's state.

    • I guess maybe they're quoting this line in their T&C's:

Limited to ten (10) statement credits per Card Member, with no more than one statement credit per merchant location.

      Source

Connaught Newsagency on Liverpool St (between Elizabeth St and Wentworth Ave, opp Hyde Park) - 50c surcharge for Opal topup by CC

I should also mention, St James Pharmacy in the St james arcade (behind David Jones, enter from castlereagh and walk behind the escalators) does opal topups and the owner dude was nice last year. I will report back if there's any surcharge this year, there was none last year.

    • Have you tried the first one today? City Convenience is out, tried at world square, not accepting, Ezy Mart at world square also not accepting.

      • +1

Yep, Connaught is good. Purchased, email received. Might try St James pharmacy later.

        • Recharged there as well, got instant email from amex! Thanks
