    • I also visited BANANA JOES FRUIT MARKET 256-258 ILLAWARRA ROAD , MARRICKVILLE , NEW SOUTH WALES 2204 - They sell OPAL, they are a AMEX shop small store, they say they don't accept any form of card to pay for OPAL!?

    • QUAY NEWSAGENCY Alfred street Circular Quay has opal topup.
St James no longer does opal topup via AMEX according to the reports above.
      Thanks for sharing your experience!

      • I realised I forgot to add that Quay does both, I purchased phone credit as an alternative to Opal as my balance was already full.

  • Shopsmall map show this

    TELSTRA STORE
229 KING ST , NEWTOWN, NEW SOUTH WALES 2042

    02 9564 8200

Really curious if we can paid their bills on AMEX from this Telstra store. Anyone tried?

    • You're probably bound to the paper payment statement fee if you did.

  • Having real bad luck finding a place in Sydney CBD that charges less than $2 for an Opal topup. Have been to four places, one said cash only for Opal, one claimed the system was down even though he just processed one for the customer before me (not sure if he paid AMEX), and two said $2 surcharge.

    • Try World Square Newsagency

      • Cheers. Finally found one convenience store on Pitt that charged only a $1

Just a heads up with St James Pharmacy. A colleague of mine went into St James Pharmacy and the lady in there went a-WALL. She said "we can do Opal top ups but not on Amex". She said they had too many people coming in to do the top up. My colleague offered to pay a surcharge and was then limited to one AMEX card. This is concurrent to the previous reports. Why bother with "Shop Small" then…. you wouldn't get the traffic otherwise? I guess it'll teach us that their service is also provided selectively. On a happier note, the Newsagency at World Square is very obliging. Someone went in with 10 AMEX cards and they took care of them. There were two people serving at the back counter, a man and woman (husband and wife team). They serviced them with a smile and said and acknowledged, yes, we know about the AMEX deal and the shop small deal. If I needed anything from the newsagency, I would make the trip to that particular newsagency and purchase it from them. Small shop is suppose to encourage us to give the "small shops" a go. If you give them a go and they treat you like a second class citizen, well, really would you think of them if you need anything from a "pharmacy"? They forget that it is in their best interest to service positively as AMEX is trying to give them a shot at "winning" customers back for a non-AMEX non-shop small transaction and period. Penny wise, pound foolish outlook with poor customer service - zero longevity. From the AMEX website "Shop Small is a national movement dedicated to supporting the small business owners of Australia. Shop Small reminds Australians of the important place local business has within our communities and helps encourage us to continue to support them". Will you continue to support St James Pharmacy? Or any other outlet that has not treated you positively with your experience?

    • I also tried St James Pharmacy this morning. The gentleman there showed me a printout of this thread, with the comment a few pages back calling them bullsh*t highlighted, and said they'll never accept AmEx again because of that comment :(

      • This is why we can't have nice things. Self-entitled misers pay out on perfectly reasonable people for having the gall to limit their losses in the face of a stampede of negative value Opal card rechargers, and it comes home to roost.

Hopefully a lesson to this forum to show some perspective, and understand that small business is not easy, so don't treat them like 'the man.'

They didn't happen to show you the praise that @madmouse58, @theone83 or even @Zippy7 provided them with? Selective engineering then? Their positive comments and experience don't count?

    • St James Pharmacy were a special case because they were the only ones not to charge a surcharge for Opal AMEX topups and consequently plenty of OzBargainers rushed to their doors to takr advantage of the situation

  • Connaught Sydney Newsagency said 50c surcharge for Opal topups but then she didn't punch it in so for me, no surcharge.

Hyde Park City Convenience says their machine doesn't accept AmEx.

  • Society convenience store, Syd have increased their opal limit so worked for me tonight. $1 surcharge. Not sure what time they're open till

completed our final rounds of Amex trip today with our last slots of our 4 cards.

Rebel Petrol Earlwood $0 surchage Opals + Petrols

IGA Annandale $0 surcharge on Opals

Croydon Crust Pizza $0 Surcharge for dinner (add on their complimentary pasta promo).

My thinking of this year November Shopsmall is much strained than last year one. Sydney CBD opal top-ups become like a surcharge topic between various stores. a lot of effort is needed to look for stores that accept AMEX and include no surcharge. We need to chase up with AMEX few more transactions this time than last year e.g. Priceline Broadway, Speedway West Ryde

Anyway, it is a good campaign. Have overall good fun look around hard everywhere on Shopsmall map to get reward. Feel like surcharge is everywhere this year around sydney.. I see compare the list we have here Melbourne have more good merchants willing to not surcharge AMEX. I wonder what will happen next year… but guessing would be even more efforts to find good value

  • I didn't receive any email confirmation nor credit by topping Myki in Piedemonte's IGA 37-49A Best Street North Fitzroy.

  • I don't know if my map is still useful for this new round and I apparently it maxes out at 3 times, not 10 :/

    • your map was really useful in the last shop small. thanks! but this time round, i couldn't find many stores to top up myki. for example, melbourne convenience store (mcs) and elizabeth pharmacy seem to be off the shop small list as far as i can tell. can anyone confirm?

      • The map is open and unlocked I think, so it can be edited. I didn't bother with this particular round, since it's (apparently?) 1 transaction per store, 3 transactions per card. To attain the same profit as last time I'd need at least 3 AMEXs and I still only have 1 :(

        • You'd better get prepared for next time then!

        • i think the issue here is that this time we have only 2 days and so by the time people report back about which stores they managed to get a successful hit, it would be too late for us to confirm that on your map. just looking at the official amex shop small map, however, it does seem like (and i'm confirming what i read on a lot of ozbargain threads) a lot of stores have gone missing from the map. unlike you, i have multiple amex cards and so this info is valuable…

        • @cache: You got multiple AMEX issued AMEX or other bank? I wanna run 2 AMEX but I'm not gonna bother applying unless I can run 2 of my own.
          I don't suppose I can refer myself, can I?

  • Limited shops this time around

    • How do you know? The Amex shop small map has always been completely unreliable.

    • I'm really hoping the map is inaccurate, because I've come home from my city walk and noticed two stores I didn't get email notifications for, are not listed on the Maps.

  • Can i go to same shop 3 times?

    • To redeem the offer, Card Members must register by saving this offer to Card and spend $20 or more on their registered Card instore at participating Shop Small Merchants, in one transaction, from 14/5/16 to 15/5/16 to receive one $10 statement credit. The offer can be redeemed once per participating Merchant at a maximum of three different Merchants.

  • Ashfield Service Station (Ashfield NSW) - went there this morning and did Opal recharge however didnt receive the email - Upon checking the AmEx Shop Small map, that shop is no longer there - wtf?

What are my chances of getting a credit? If I dont get it, can I email AmEx screenshot of the last credit they gave me and ask for this time again? I have 4 amex cards so did 4 x $20 transactions. thanks

    • was about to go there mate…

    • I have the same issue with Nextra Chatswood. I should have checked the map first. Doh.

  • 96 Carlisle street Convenience store works.. 50 cents surcharge though.. as mentioned in the list. Thanks..

  • +1

Hey, I registered for AMEX ShopSmall and used my cards to top OPal on 15/5/2016, but received no credits. I then enquired online at AMEXConnect, this is the answer I got:

"Thank you for your enquiry. I have checked our system record and found that QUAY NEWSAGENCY (Circular Quay), World Square News agency and Wu’s pharmacy are not Shop Small participate merchant. Unfortunately, we are not able to apply a statement credit in this instance."

    kimle

    • That explains. I got a 33% success (got a credit for Grocery Zone Sussex)

    • are they listed on the map ?
If yes, you can call their suppport… they will search the map and if the merchant is listed, they would manually credit.

  • +3

Time to update this list, guys.

    • +2

      Updated list here

  • Just a quick warning:
Waverley Road Authorised News is at the same address as Darling South IPO (post office hence not eligible for shopsmall), I went in to top up Myki and they charged me $1 surcharge.
Then AMEX won't give me the cashback - no way I'd have known since they are at the same address. Biggest waste of time.

  • Please see the Amex Shop Small Guide wiki page and page discussion post for the latest information.

  • Hello Guys,

I am new to Amex , sorry if i sound dumb,so if i spent lets say 240 $ on opal on qualifying shop , will i get 120 $ back ?, thanks

    • $10 back per shop up to 10 different shops (NOT the same shop)

  • Essendon Pharmacy no longer takes American Express for Myki. Demarte Amcal is still good.
