    • Did they charge you a $1 fee for the first amex card and then no surcharge for the second? Sorry, just trying to see how the transaction works.

      • +1

        yes, first card only

  • 22 campbell st sydney and the marrickville metro newsagency arent taking amex

    • Just used amex for opal top up at 22 campbell st sydney today. $1 surcharge -didn't get email from amex.

    • When there today, and staff said they don't take amex card at all

      • Marrickville Metro or City Convenience?

        • City Convenience 22 Campell St Sydney. I went to a couple other City Convenience stores, staff was happy with $1 surcharge.

        • @hesky: this is so odd

        • @chocfrogs456: went again yesterday and he said def not accepting, maybe the other person got served by a new person

  • For places that are on the shop small list, but claim to not take Amex, or charge your a surcharge, be sure to tell Amex about it, they will refund you the money.

    • Can't see how you can ask for a refund if you've agreed to the surcharge before making the payment.

      • +1

I have done it with no fuss from Amex.

        • amex-issued or bank-issued card?

        • @Love a bargain:
          Bank-issued.

        • @Banana: Did you complain to the bank or AMEX directly?

        • @Love a bargain:
Amex, just send them an email.

        • +1

@Banana: oh. At which email address? The only contact I can find that does not seem to be specific to amex-issued cards is the Customer Relations Hotline on 1300 736 659.

Called them once and they don't seem to care about bank-issued card holders at all.

        • @Love a bargain: yes. how to contact amex about credit issues for bank issued cards?
          what email?

        • @Banana: how did you email amex that they refund your surcharge without fuss? did you say purchase something or opal top-up etc?

        • @leehungfei:
Just asked my SO about this since he sent the emails. Apparently it's just the usual customer care line on the AMEX website.
Last year we complained about a restaurant that charged us 3% surcharge and AMEX gave us extra $10, on top of the one from the promo.

Today we went into a newsagency to top up my Myki card, they didn't want to take card at all. Emailed AMEX about it and 2 hours later they gave us $10…

        • Leehungfei, Which Amex email address did u use?

        • Thank u kindly, Banana :)

        • @2308:
It's my pleasure to be of service :)

        • @Banana: which email address? I have tried emailing and have not heard back

        • @chocfrogs456:
Hi, if you go to the link I posted above, raymond y has outlined all the details :)

      • +1

Amex themselves will pay it, not the merchant. However, the Merchant will probably get a warning at the very least from Amex, since they would be receiving a preferential (discount) rate specifically for not surcharging. Amex usually charges a higher rate for businesses that surcharge.

  • These both appear on the myki and Shop Small site, but success TBC.

City convenience store on Flinders Street does not accept Amex even with surcharge. Lolz

    • I've added places that don't accept AMEX as reported by users. Those entries are crossed out.
    • I've also added another column that links to the comment where the user tried to make the transaction. Some comments are being made on the original thread.

If you are successful with a topup, even if it is already listed, please make a comment so we can add another verification to the table.

  • City Convenience 257 Sussex St Sydney asked for $3 surcharge to do Opal topup.

  • Melbourne Collins Place News and Lotto, they didn't accept AMEX for Myki top up.

Victoria Harbour Pharmacy & News at Docklands accept AMEX and no extra charges. No extra 3% or 5% which surprised me :-)

    • Interesting. I just went to Collins Place during the lunch hour and they said they did accept, but with a surcharge. They weren't able to tell me exactly, but for a $20 top-up it would be "$1.60 odd". I did not top up.

Elizabeth Pharmacy also allow AMEX myki top-ups, but with a $1 surcharge per card. I didn't top up there, either.

      • Depends on the attendant I guess. The lady that me that they don't even accept the credit cards and she was Indian looking.

        • Yeah, I spoke to a (white) male.

    • Just got back from recharging here.

They definitely take Amex and charged me a 3% surcharge, he mentioned he had a lot of people this morning doing it and I explained why, he didn't know what shop small was.

Can confirm accepted Amex with 3% surcharge at Collins Place. Served by middle-aged slim white male around 2PM today. Email notification received immediately after.

  • Many places in Newtown, Sydney don't appear to ve participating and the one Ezymart closest to the train station told me their payment system doesn't support Amex despite being list in the Amex search.

  • East Bentleigh Tatts appeared on AMEX transactions as (LOTS & SORTS PTY LTD, BENTLEIGH EAST 3165). 0.60 $ extra charges for Myki top up.

    • so did you get the $10 credit or did you have to chase with Amex?

my charge has appeared but no email nor credit.

      • Yes I did. But mine show up after a couple of days for some reasons.

  • +1

For everybody having trouble using their amex card on places already listed on the shop small site, I recommend spending a moment to report the business to Amex who would want to know this info https://www316.americanexpress.com/iFormsSecure/un/iforms.do…

    • This merchant has probably caught on, they have a nice little notice on the edge of the counter, "No Amex for Opal". Probably only good for Fuel or in store product purchases now.

      • Just did topup opal card there yesterday afternoon,no issue,no surcharge at all

        • Hi Neoika,
So I took my chances and visited this site again. The counter no longer has that message "No Amex for Opal", however the counter attendant proceeded to issue my an Opal credit before asking what card I was using. I advised it was Amex, he then proceeded to ask me do I have any other form of Payment as they didn't accept AMEX!?

So Neoika, you were lucky that time, but this is not going to end well. They will be reported to AMEX for shifting the goal posts.

        • +1

@theone83: Flatly refused to accept AMEX yesterday for Opal top-up.
