I will update the thread as comment come in.

If you know of any shops that accepted AMEX last year, feel free to post in the comments.

        • @noskich: just like to check. are you sure they not offering another rebate if you shop around City Convenience or Ezymart etc etc?

so this mean we can only go to one City Convenience store in the whole city? There are so many around whole Sydney region even in Parramatta, Chatswood, North Sydney etc???

        • @noskich: Or go to different IGA stores then count only one rebate?

        • @leehungfei:

As mentioned previously both City and Ezy did not accept amex at various locations. I haven`t tried to spend in two stores of the same chain, I was just told by amex on the phone only one store qualifies.

        • How did the pharmacy trip go?

        • +2

@macadamia: Can confirm, St James Pharmacy has amex with no surcharge. Just received the amex email. Owner is a lovely dude (swear I saw him wince when i asked about Opal CC topup), so felt guilty and bought a pair of earplugs for $1.

        • @carwashhair: Update - earplugs are quite useful for those shopsmall merchants that say they don't accept amex

  • Tried at Northpoint Newsagency (North Sydney) today as it's a participating store but they do not accept any credit cards for Opal topups.

    • I offered to pay a surcharge and their story changed. But they said they didn't accept Amex at all any more - which is a change since last year.

  • +6

Convenience Store Village accepted without surcharge
    38 Harris Street Pyrmont

  • Rathdowne Newsagency, 410 Rathdowne St, carlton north.

Was there this arvo, they refuse to accept AMEX for topping Myki. Should have called b4 getting there, wasted my time. Please cross off!

    • @ssholes.

    • Maybe if you offer to pay a $1 surcharge?

  • +1

Ok, some late night cross referencing between the Shop Small map

    https://maps.americanexpress.com/AUShopSmall#?type=storefron…

and the list of Myki Retail Outlets (http://ptv.vic.gov.au/tickets/myki/myki-retail-outlets/)

    Confirmed today:

Essendon Pharmacy - 1049 Mt Alexander rd.
    Swanston St Lotto (Surcharge)
Station St IGA - 140 Station St Fairfield - They do Myki. They also have Connoisseur Chocolate Obsession which is impossible to find elsewhere, just so you know.

Rathdowne News, 410 Rathdowne - reported as not accepting AMEX

Glass Street Milk Bar (37 Glass st, Essendon)
Went here today. Myki sign is up but the chinese lady politely informed me that they didn't take Amex.

    For future investigation:

Zouki Convenience Store (300 Grattan St - Inside Royal Melbourne Hospital)
Pharmacy - 66 Merchant St, Docklands VIC 3008
Gertrude St Mini Mart - 169-171 Gertrude St
Halfpenny Pharmacy - 381 Sydney Rd Coburg
Kirschners Pharmacy - 333 Napier St Strathmore

    • +1 for the Station street IGA. No surcharge and email confirmation received straight after.

  • Getting error…..The system cannot validate your Card information at this time. Please try again in a few hours.

Can we have a separate Sydney list? (Perhaps even a new posting/thread)

Given someone already started a Melbourne list, I think the other cities (SYD/BNE/CBR/ADL/etc) would appreciate a separate post to make it easier to take up the Amex offer.

    I can add (for Sydney):
    a) Izakaya Arigato (Railway St Chatswood) does NOT accept Amex (it is on the shopsmall list)
    b) Chatswood Westfield Newsagency asked for 5% surcharge when we asked if we could do an Opal top-up
    c) Metro Petroleum Castlecove accepted Amex with NO surcharge (got my email as I used chip/pin)
    d) Metro Petroleum Lane Cove accepted Amex - no surcharge charged, but no email (was a tap/contactless) - will keep checking online statement.

    • Is Metro Petroleum Lane Cove do Opal top up? or just on petrol purpose?

  • +1

From past year's experience, most convenience stores in Sydney treat customers paying with AmEx as if they are doing them a favour despite charging surcharge anywhere from $0.50 to $3. They also get pissed in case you have multiple cards :)

    • +1

you are right. i experienced it today.

  • Well done for everyone checking. The OP seems to have disappeared so have updated the post. Keep checking and I'll continue to update the list.

    • couldn't update because editing button disappeared, Please add long term editing neil

      • It locks out edits by default after 2 weeks, so Oct 29. You should now have access.

  • Caulfield convenience store does not accept Amex.

Accepted at Malvern Authorised Newsagency at 114 Glenferrie Road, Malvern

  • went to 22 Campbell st today. they don't take amex

  • Central park newsagency charged me 50 cents surcharge to do the myki top up

  • Just an update for opal card top up, went down to Convenience Store Village 38 Harris st and the guy in store is charging $1 for opal top up unless you spend $5 in the store

EzyMart 11-23 Rawson pl haymarket surcharge $1 opal top up as well

  • I have not tried them yet but the Amcal Chemist at 517 North Rd Ormond appears on both the myki and shop small maps. Same for East Bentleigh Tatts at 761 Centre Rd. I will try to get to them this week but let me know if you have any luck.

    • Did you get a chance to try? I'll suss it out on Sunday if they are open.

  • OP, Please update the following

    1) Update 155 Sussex street to 257 Sussex street
    2) City Convenience / 580 George street Sydney/ $1 surcharge for 2 cards
    3) City Convenience / 25 Market Street Sydney/ $1 surcharge per card

    • Done

    • 25 market st opal machine is back in operation? i went yesterday and it was down =(

  • So stupid question time. From the list of stores in Sydney, with my opal I can request $20, pay a small surcharge and walk out with a receipt for $21 and get $10 on my next statement.

I don't have to get 2x $10 recharges? Can you even request $19?

    • I think the Opal device can only do $20, $40, $60 etc.
There might be an option for $10 but definitely not $19.

  • +1

$1 surcharge for Opal top-up at Fastway Convenience Store at 27 Park St Sydney (near Pitt)

    • I did search for this one on the map, but couldn't find it.

This is really a convenient store as it's next to the bus stop, good to take advantage of opal journeys.

    • Can you confirm if you have received e-mail confirmation / credit ?

      • deleted

  • Ezymart at 52 Martin place - $0.50 surcharge. Confirmed by myself today.

    • added. Thanks

      • +1

I topped up Opal there today - surcharge has increased to $1.

        • I have tried topping it up there this afternoon.

Asked to split my $40 payment and have been refused to top it up for me. (not refusing the split, but the whole $40 altogether). Wtf?

        • @googleyahoo69: Successful top-up with a $1 surcharge. Email received immediately.

        • +1

          @fusela:

went there this morning, taught the cashier and his friend how to register the amex offer themselves, in return he did 5 cards for me with no surcharge. the machine paywave don't work on amex cards, so it was painfully slow to select credit and punch in pins multiple times.

  • +2

EzyMart at Rawson Pl, Haymarket - machine was down this morning.

Also, pro-tip courtesy of World Square Newsagency:
If you're using multiple cards just tell them in advance. That way they can just put through a single Epay transaction, and just do the multiple CC payments separately through their EFTPOS. Saves them time having to do both multiple Epay AND EFTPOS transactions (not sure if it also saves them transaction fees for Epay).

    • Great point! Thanks for the tip

  • +1

IGA at Putney - no surcharge

top up there over the weekend and no fees, got e-mail. Will try couple of places at Eastwood and Macquarie and report back.

    • Are you talking about IGA in Putney or the Putney Newsagency?
I did at Putney Newsagency (2 cards) and got email in one and didn't get on another. I was charged 3% surcharge for Opal Recharge.

      • I went to the IGA with no fees, didn't know the Newsagent next door participate. Will have to go back there if I get a chance.

        • Did you do Opal Recharge at IGA?

        • Got statement credit email from IGA after buying Opal. Thanks JKF.

        • I topped up 2 OPAL cards today at IGA Putney. Very low-fuss transactions - no surcharge, paid by paywave and both emails received before I left the shop.

  • +1

Halfpenny Pharmacy - 381 Sydney Rd Coburg (66 cent surcharge)
Kirschners Pharmacy - 333 Napier St Strathmore (25 cent surcharge)

    Still winning

Opal and Myki must be wondering why the sudden spike in sales in early november. Just more of our cash for them to hold in an investment account I suppose.

    • +1

If it's noticeable (a few thousand Ozbargainers and other die hard bargain hunters) out of how many of the millions of users the systems have, it would probably only be picked up by very keen analysts IMO. More likely the retailers wonder why they get bombarded with $20 top ups on Amex.

      • Some already knew the deal on Friday (world square news agent, sydney cbd). Imagine how many people had been there already on Day 1!

    • I dunno about a spike in sales, but definitely a sudden spike in stored value in the system.

  • Fastway Convenience Store 27 Park St Sydney $1.00

this store is not on the AMEX map.

    • Did you get an email or account credit yet?

      • cmc 16 hours 10 min ago

$1 surcharge for Opal top-up at Fastway Convenience Store at 27 Park St Sydney (near Pitt)

Someone suggested this and OP added to the list.. but this store is not on the Map.

        • Yes, I received the email straight away after spending $20 + the $1 surcharge.

When I look at my account online though, none of my 3 credits are showing….as yet…

        • @cmc:
Credit may take upto 5 business days.
as long as you get an email, you shud be safe.
          please keep us posted

    • hmmm, i did not receive the email confirmation

  • Please remove 265 Castlereagh St from the list. They don't take amex.

    • OK, done.

    • Funny, they have amex stickers at the entrance to their shop (though not shopsmall stickers). Perhaps I should offer to 'redecorate' their stickers. Or just report them to amex…

  • Please add this to the list:
City Convenience , 368 Sussex street, Sydney , $1 surcharge per card

    • i was just there 1hr ago, they force me to buy something from the shop >.< so i left

  • +1

Convenience Store Village just adds the surcharge without informing customer. I found this kind of practice to be very dodgy and would avoid spending any of my money there in the future (whether cash or card, whether shop small or not).

    • +1

Report them to Amex. Futile, but might as well.

      • I think I will.

      • I've got a bank-issued AMEX. Wonder if I should report them to AMEX (if so, how) or dispute the charge via the bank.

  • I think it very much depends on the worker at the store. Acts of one worker are not always representative of the whole store. At Convenience Store Village I was charged 1 dollar surcharged on the first Opal recharge, however the two other recharges were free.

    • -1

An employer is responsible for the action of its employee. Full stop.

      • Well, it seems like Amex employed us as their evangelists to promote them to small business which might think wow, so many customers are using Amex, I should enable that facility. We 're paid to locate and negotiate with obscure retailers to install Amex which is charging unreasonable fees and paying no tax in Australia even though it made billions profit.

  • City convenience, 60 Macleay St Potts Point. $1 charge, got the email.

    • it doesn't appear on AMEX map?

  • Opal top up: Lucky Charm Pavilion at Town Hall Station $2 surcharge.

  • Confirmed: Essendon Pharmacy - No surcharge

    • location please

      • 1049 Mt Alexander Rd

Darling Harbour View (24-26a Erskine Street) do opal topups with $1 flat fee surcharge for all credit card transactions.
J.W News (275 Kent St) do opal topups and charge a 3% surcharge (60c for a 20 dollar topup).

Both used paywave and I received confirmation emails instantly.

I made a map for the sydney folks if they want to go walking around! This isnt a definitive list though and will be updated…

    https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=zUTu8fOMF6gM.kGPTjTuV…

    • I was doing the exact same thing. But you beat me to it 😁. Will need to get extra opal cards this year to maximise the offer

      • +1

        and extra Amex cards ?

    • thanks for the list but 300 George refuse to take amex when i went few days ago

  • all updated

    Keep them coming

    • +1

Please delete this as its not there on the map.
Fastway Convenience Store 27 Park St Sydney $1.00

      • what do you mean. They dont take AMEX

        • Not sure if they accept AMEX or not.
but its not on the AMEX shop small map - https://maps.americanexpress.com/AUShopSmall

$10 credit may not be applied !

        • +2

          @spk:

Not all shops are on the map. Thats why we have this wiki :)

        • +1

@easternculture: Excuse my ignorance but I thought all the shops in the shop small map were potentially participating (some don't accept amex) but anything not listed definitely wouldn't be? You would also have no grounds for amex to manually award you the credit if it's not on the map (if it doesn't automatically come through).

        • @YadaYadaYada:

Some shops are not listed but still are participating. You can ask the shop if they received the information from AMEX and they will also tell you if they are participating if you ask

        • @easternculture: even if you ask the shops, they would just need a reason to refuse AMEX.

I think its a bigger problem if you use AMEX at shops that are not on the maps.

        • +1

          @YadaYadaYada:

They only get listed on the map if they accept Amex and processed a transaction between July and October. It must be some kind of system that Amex uses to scrape the data. But essentially any "small business" (turnover less than $1.3m) that accepts amex is a "qualifying merchant"

        • @zzyss: And $1.3m of Amex turnover means a very high turnover, as virtually nobody does most of their sales in Amex (except maybe Myki resellers during ShopSmall month!). Hence places like the Hawthorn Football Club (membership revenue $10+m) count as ShopSmall.

        • @JohnHowardsEyebrows:

As did Westmead IVF, from personal experience!

        • @YadaYadaYada: If you take the map as gospel, there are a number of businesses supposedly 'participating' that have closed altogether…

        • @carwashhair: Yeh I know that some of the businesses on the map aren't all participating. Some don't accept amex which is kind of annoying.

    • Very cool of you.
