        • Somehow they didn't even included in the transaction list yet

        • @neil: I did my top up on 30th and didn't receive the notification email or didn't know up in my transaction list. It came up and received a cash back after 3 days.

      • I went there today and I politely declined his offer to charge me $4. :)

        • +1

Report him to Amex. I don't mind covering the surcharge, but basically splitting the credit is just scammery.

        • Wow. That's the winner of the biggest surcharge. I guess that's probably the most popular spot on our list as it's centrally located.

        • +1

          @neil:

It was1 dollar per card. I had 4 cards. He was polite though. Lol

        • +1

@djcharliek: I don't mind paying $1 per card. That's basically just giving them back the merchant fee they're losing, and you still end up $9 better off.

        • +1

          @djcharliek:

Ah ok. That clears things up. $1 per card is reasonable.

          @JohnHowardsEyebrows:

This is ozbargain! hahaha. I've found that IGA's do it for free! IGA here can be added to the list.

IGA 37-49A Best Street, North Fitzroy, VIC, 3068

    • MCS, 327 Elizabeth Street didn't accept Amex for Myki topup. And of course they mentioned it after they had topped up my myki. So had to pay with the other card.

      • That sucks. Thanks for trying.

EDIT: You might want to try pinging AMEX and tell them. There is a good chance they will credit your account $10.

      • Confirmed. But I first asked if they top up. Reply was "not with Amex". I walked out.

    • Cross off Rathdowne Newsagency. They did the whole horrified "no amex here" routine

    • Is there any other spots? A full comprehensive list?

    • 327 elizabeth does work! Just paid $.5 on too to cover their fees.

    I need more Amex cards!

My girlfriend and I have a total of 6 amex between us, this means lots of dining out

    • +22

'… this means lots of dining out'

Yeppers, and some 'fun stacking' can be done in this respect, particularly if you have the 'Entertainment Book' and are into 'Dimi' or QFF points…

For example, you can go out as a couple to a place you've booked via Dimi (which 'earns' you $12.50 towards a $50 meals voucher), and use a trusty '2-for-1' main-courses voucher from the E-book to get two $20 main courses for a total of $20, then pay with AMEX to receive $10 back… meaning that for a total outlay of $10, you get $40 'worth' of main courses, and $12.50 'worth' of Dimi voucher.

Alternatively, for a larger gathering/ if you're into QFF points, you can book via the Qantas scheme that awards a certain amount of points to the 'bookee' per diner, use an E-book voucher for '25% off the total bill', and get $10 back from AMEX.

      Good times.

      • +7

TIL I am a complete amateur at ozbargain

      • Just checked the Dimmi thing you mentioned.. it says 1000 points towards your 8000 points required for a $50 voucher. By my calculations, this is the equivalent of $6.25. You've doubled it somehow. Surely it doesn't count per diner?
Unless you're counting the other stuff you have to do to get another 1000 points (review?)

Also probably important to note that the $50 voucher must then be used at one of the places on the list - not that it's a bad thing, just a little more restrictive than simply being a "$50 EFTPOS card" for example

        • +1

Re the Dimmi points, now that you mention it I think that to get 2000 you do need to comment on your experience on their website; but this can be anonymous if memory serves, and their term 'review' is a bit overstated as a couple of sentences (requiring a total of 10 or 20 seconds to construct) seems to suffice. Re the $50 voucher, that's a good point you make; particularly for those not residing in/near capital cities. In fact the choices are quite limited, unless you're in Sydney or Melbourne.

Church of scientology came up under "shopping" in perth.

Trying to find a cult and have a $10 bucks to spare? This will double your donation.

    • Sin no Scientology is a religion but donations are not deductible unless its a registered and approved charity. As for the former - Justices Mason and Brennan said:
Charlatanism is a necessary price of religious freedom, and if a self-proclaimed teacher persuades others to believe in a religion which he propounds, lack of sincerity or integrity on his part is not incompatible with the religious character of the beliefs, practices and observances accepted by his followers. and The High Court of Australia restored Scientology's tax exempt status in 1983.[46] The High Court's decision, dismissing the earlier judgements, now serves as the current precedent for defining religious groups from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scientology_in_Australia there is some interesting readings on this. At 16 even then I could not get through L. Ron Hubbard's Dianetics which is still in my library.

    • buy a $10,000 course, get $10 back.. Bargain!

Time for me to stock up on pre-paid coffee cards

I enjoy my Amex rewards, but can appreciate smaller outfits not liking them. After all, they're the ones that get screwed. Their turnover is lower, but don't get the lower merchant fees the big guys get. If your margins are high, Amex fees are easy to absorb. If your margins are thin, better not to offer Amex at all.

    • +2

Amex does currently give a discounted rate to retail merchants (1.51%, IIRC) that qualify for Shop Small. This is lower than the rate for some higher level (platinum/Signature/World) Visas/MasterCards (though many merchants have a "blended" Visa/MC rate that means they pay the same rate for all Visas/MCs).

Overall you're still right though, I can appreciate why many lower-margin places aren't as happy to accept Amex. Such is life.

(source: Australian Frequent Flyer, where Amex acceptance is a very common topic…)

      • +1

A lot of the times, the discounted fees are for a token turnover limit and/or time. But still, 3% is $3 per $100 or $6 for $200. For low cost items, you have to work on higher margins.

What I do find abhorrent is when the merchant charges higher fees from the retailer and still charges high annual fees to the cardholder!

  • Thanks OP

  • Good timing to top up Myki. Thanks OP.

    • Actually can get quiet stressful trying to maximise bang for your buck especially when retailers give you grief for card spitting

      • +10

I would give you grief too if you spat on your card before giving it to me.

  • When i run out of buying tasty food at the fresh food markets i buy scratchies - always get my money back and then some if im lucky :)

  • Amex charge small business 3% fee while visa/master charge 0.50~0.70%, thats why many of small business refuse to take Amex.

    • +1

Not if the small business gets off its ass and learns negotiation skills.

Source: A small business owner told me they called AMEX and got the same rate they were getting from Visa/Mastercard.

      • Is it what Amex sales told them?

  • Thanks OP!

  • The T&Cs say connected cards are accepted but I can't work out if each card can be used 10 times, or 5 each?

    • +2

Each card can be used 10 times.

  • Hi guys, can't seem to find save my card to be registered for the deal. Anyone can help.

Silly me, didn't read properly. :)

Register for Shop Small on American Express Connect from 28 October.

    • Looks like you have a lot of time on your hand.

  • Read the above :)

  • How would this work with HICaps?

  • Is American Express from commonwealth bank valid for this offer?

    • used DJ card last time. Try to register if works good if not you have your answer .

    • Worked with Westpac Amex last time.

      • And it also worked with NAB AMEX, and ANZ AMEX. I don't think you'll have a problem.

    • Yep it's valid. I've saved it to my card successfully.

I really like the shop small promo.
I live in a tourist town, so many of the shops are gift/souvenir/premium wares that I usually have little time or budget for, but they often run a few discounts towards Xmas, and the shop small promo makes them price leaders for some gifts. It is the one month of the year where I can shop at little boutique retailers and get good value.
I should finish by saying I'm not anti-small retailers. They are often the best to buy what I want. But my spending is largely consumer staples (think groceries and generics at that!) and extremely specialised items (a specific model of an unusual item) that is available at only a few small retailers, and usually no big ones. Examples are electronic components, roller derby gear, music stuff - not the kind of stuff in Kmart or BigW.
So at Xmas I tend to spend on a few other people who are less choosey, and I like to visit my local shops and feel I am getting a good deal.

  • Pro tip: buy gift vouchers/cards from the store.

Just make sure you use them before they expire tho.

    • how to find which gc (merchant) are available for this?

      • +1

        Trial and error. :(

  • I don't have Amex card, which card should I apply for this pro? I check Amex website, application form required to filled out my annual income, and want my employment detail, contact phone number..

    • Yes. If you're getting a credit card, they want to make sure you earn enough income to be able to pay it back. They need to confirm this with your employer.

You can apply for any Amex card that suits your needs, either from a bank or direct from Amex. Since it sounds like maybe you won't be getting a lot of use out of it, perhaps a no annual fee card would be best.

    • +2

You can try to get the Commonwealth Bank 40,000 QFF point deal they have right now.
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/214530

Otherwise there is the free for life one from Amex itself.

      • thanks, I'll check that out.

  • I never have credit card and don't want one, do they have debit card that qualify for this promotion?

    • +4

      No.

    • +2

You could get a $1000 credit card from a bank to take advantage of this. If you get the ANZ one, you can use ShopSmall, spend $2.5 over three months (you can prepay to stop getting into debt), then you'll get 25,000 Qantas Frequent Flyer points (enough for a return Melbourne-Gold Coast flight), and no annual fee.

Worth doing, even if it's only just once in your lifetime.

      • -4

what the, what does that have to do with this promo?

        • +2

Two birds with one stone. You may not want a credit card, but if you want to use ShopSmall, may as well take advantage of the numerous offers around.

      • +1

'… spend $2.5 over three months'

        Cool, that's a spend requirement of only 84 cents a month… where do I sign? ;P

    • Thats a paddlin'

  • I have two AMEX cards from different bank.
Should I register a separate AMEX account for each card?
Can you register multiple AMEX cards under the same account?

  • Any good deals on the South side of Brisbane.
    Thanks OP

  • Can't find where to register my card?

  • +1

Its one time $10 per merchant. If the shop has several branches, can I use at different branches and get more $10 back?

    • +1

That depends on their banking setup. If Amex thinks they are the same merchant then no.
If they are independent franchisees then probably.

      • How to tell?

        • You won't know till after, whether you get the email or not.

        • Ask the manager.

      • Anyone know if this will be the case with NightOwl? Looking for some go card credit.
