AmEx Shop Small Donations

While going through AmEx shop Small comments I came across the fact that quiet a few donations count as valid transactions and trigger the $10 cashback.

This means we end up paying:

Tax Bracket Out of Pocket
0 – $18,200 $10.00
$18,201 – $37,000 $5.80
$37,001 – $80,000 $3.10
$80,001 – $180,000 $2.20
$180,001 and over $0.60

*2% Medicare Levy included in calculation.

I personally have 3 AmEx cards and have used around 5 transactions on each. I am planning on using the remaining tranasctions towards the end of the month to donate to various charitable organisations.
In the past we have had quiet a few discussions on merits of donating and the amount of money which actually ends up being used for the stated purpose. Based on data published it seems to me that ~30% of the amount donated ends up in the right hands and ~70% ends up being administrative and operational cost. In my case I end being out of pocket by $3.10 but ~$6 ends up in the right hands which makes it a no-brainer for me.
In my research I have come across the following charities that accept AmEx and are listed on shop small website:

*RFDS - VIC and WA don't accept Amex as a payment method

Edit: The table above now includes organisations as reported by other users

I would love to hear if you have found any other organisations that are a part of AmEx shop small promo, or if you have had success with the above organisations. My aim in starting this thread is to compile a list of organisations and donate to worthwhile causes(subjective) and also encourage others to do the same.

  • Good idea!

  • Fantastic work op.

  • Great job op!

Cerebral Palsy Alliance is also listed, and I've made a donation and received the email (though it does say they are checking whether it qualifies or not)

Westmead Children's Hospital is also listed.

If they do allow the credit, it's an added incentive to donate to needy causes

    • UPDATE: I received my $10 credit back with the Cerebral Palsy Alliance Donation

  • What a great idea - I have just tried RSPCA and Heart Foundation - will report back if I get the $10 rebate

    • Hi tristanium, did u receive an email from AmEx? From my experience that is a good enough indicator.

      • +1

I did Beyond Blue and got email almost instantly. Keen to know if it works for RSPCA as well.

      • No, I didnt get emails for these two, but my rebate has shown up today anyway.

Royal Flying Doctors and Beyond Blue are both confirmed by other OzBargainers in the main Shop Small thread.

    • Thanks, I have included Beyond Blue in the OP but unfortunately from what I can see, Royal flying doctors only accept Visa or MasterCard.

      • RFDS (NSW) accepts Amex and confirmation email received immediately
        Beyond blue confirmed

  • This sounds great! My workplace will match donations made, so if your workplace also matches donations made then even more money would make it to the charity!

  • I can confirm Shake It Up is eligible. https://shakeitup.org.au/make-donation/

Shake It Up is a foundation supporting research into Parkinon's disease that differs from other charities in that its founder has undertaken to fund all of the administrative costs associated with it. This means that 100% of donations are directed to research.

Note that payments don't seem to be processed automatically so it takes half an hour or so to receive your receipt/Amex email.

  • Royal Institute of Deaf and Blind Children, North Rocks, Sydney working as well. Got the email confirmation. They have general donation or you can buy rainbow lottery (raffle) tickets

Just made my end of month donations. I can confirm that Careflight, McGrath Foundation and Nation Breast Cancer Foundation are eligible. I have also successfully donated to RSPCA, Cerebral Palsy, Shake it Up and Heart Foundation.

  • Excellent idea. Sorry i missed the boat.

  • Cottage by The Sea works too, for 2015. Really good cause, helping disadvantaged children.

  • RSPCA, & Westmead Children's Hospital worked, thanks OP. The $10 credit emails came immediately for all cards (Amex & Bank issued).

Shake it Up doesn't appear to work anymore and isn't on the list (as far as I can see), I'll report back if it comes through later.

Shake it Up also worked, they just don't process payments immediately.

  • Light FM and I have received the shop small credit email.

  • Can confirm careflight works!! :)

  • Cerebral Palsy Alliance and RIDBC (Deaf and Blind) works again for 2015 on both AMEX and bank issued cards

  • Using AMEX issued card - I received email confirmation straight away for:
Heart Foundation, National Breast Cancer Foundation, Cerebral Palsy Alliance

Prostate Cancer, Medecins Sans Frontiers, Salvation Army, UN Refugee Agency & The Smith Family Foundation took AMEX but I didnt get emails from AMEX - rebate may still come through - will post back (although it may be too late!)

    • Any updates on the charities that did not come back immediately?

  • Any suggestions as to how to find the charities on the shop small map

  • I found cancer council of QLD on the map: www.cancerqld.org.au, none of the others listed but as you know, the map is really hard to use.

  • Can anyone confirm that they got the $10 credit from the recent Small Shop weekend? I found out about these too late but I'm planning to do some in Small Shop November.

    • I tried the Heart Foundation and didn't get the $10 cashback. It doesn't look good for charities.

      • Oxfam one with the online sale is not too bad. Donate $60 get $30 back.

        • Thanks, I missed that one somehow. Cheers!

  • How do you find list of charities ?

  • No idea, but as pointed out here, Lost Dogs Home in Melbourne is on the map

    Leukaemia Foundation Qld

    https://www.leukaemiaqld.org.au/get-involved/make-a-donation…

Didnt get email, Made donation to Careflight, Lost Dog's Home, and the above.

    Hmmmm Oh well!

Good on you for donating but none of those show up in the AMEX small shop search map. The only ones from the above list that I could find are:
      Cerebral Palsy League of QLD
      Cancer Council of QLD
      RSPCA NSW

I'm going to donate to all of them and see if it triggers emails. I'll continue investigating other charities as well and report if I find any more.

      • I donated to Cerebral Palsy League of QLD, no email. However they use the payment gateway of 'everydayhero', so it appears as everydayhero on the transactions. Oh well, no disputing that one.

I also donated to RSPCA NSW and that shows up correctly as RSPCA NSW on the pending transactions, no email from AMEX though. Hoping to recieve $10 credit.

Cancer Council of QLD - Their donation page states that they do not accept AMEX and Diners for online donation and requests to call their customer service number.

Oxfam Works - it is independent of the Shop Small promotion. Received my $30 back instantly.

Could donating bargainers post any other charities that work please.

    • +1

Ya oxfam works, I donated total of $600, now and with another amex coming, so hopfeully $660 :)

Here are to other places for using the Online Retail spend $60 get back $30 offer -
      https://opera.org.au/buytickets/donate - Confirmed works, I bought tickets.

http://www.australiangeographic.com.au/society/donate/2013/1… Not sure if it works but it should.

      • Nice work! I'm loving the fact that Oxfam is on the online retail promotion! I could only donate 4x = $240 but it's still good and Oxfam as a charity do some good work (69% of the funding actually ends up on projects helping the poor). I got the emails, but yet to receive credit though for Oxfam.

      • http://www.australiangeographic.com.au/society/donate/2013/1… Not sure if it works but it should.

I bought things from Aus Geographic shop (science toys) and got the emails. However, the Aus Geo Society donation won't trigger the credit because on the donation page it says:

All online donations go directly to the the Australian Geographic Society via Every Day Hero's online donation portal. Australian Geographic Society ABN: 65 811 760 355

This means the transaction on your AMEX will be listed as 'everydayhero' rather than Australian Geographic (happened to me when donating to Cerebral Palsy League of QLD).

However, people could still donate if the cashback is not a worry :) Aus Geo use the funds for nature conservation project, good cause!

    • hey did u donate $60 to oxfam in 3 separate transactions of $20 each with 3 AMEX to get $60 back?

      • +2

Oxfam donations are not a part of shop small (spend $20 get $10 back promotion). Oxfam donations are a part of Online Retail/Click Frenzy promotion (spend $60 and get $30 back). Here's the link.
So you donate $60 from one card in one go and it triggers a $30 cashback. You repeat it multiple times if you've got multiple cards :)

  • Still looking for confirmed charities for 2016.
My findings of deductible gift recipients that are listed on the map, but I haven't donated yet.:
    https://www.nationaltrust.org.au/donate/
    http://www.heartresearch.com.au/donation/
    http://www.pbcf.org.au/donation/

A couple of other ones that are on the map and ATO DGR list, but it isn't an exact match:
    Mindd Foundation
Windgap Foundation (their onlne donate page goes via givenow, so may miss the credit)

    • +1

can confirm for anyone else wanting to use those last couple of shop small credits - http://www.pbcf.org.au/donation/ triggered the shop small email :)

      • Thank you so much!
RSPCA NSW for me did not trigger the email. I called them up and requested a manual review and they said if my claim is successful then I'll have the credit in 5 days. It's been a lot more than 5 days and nothing yet.
