    • Report them immediately to Amex by phone.Amex want to be told

      • They accept Amex for other purchases, just not Opal top ups.

        • Do they accept Visa and Mastercard for top ups?

        • @IanC:
Nope. No credit cards at all. $1 surcharge for cheque or money order, LOL.

        • @zzyss:

          Report them to Amex..
You may still be given a goodwill rebate.
Tell them it cost you $10.00 on public transport to get there

  • Just a tip for those awaiting confirmation email of the spend.
Have had 7 spends since saturday and just found all the email in junk folder.
Had been sent on same day as spend.
First two rebates for fuel from Saturday (Nov1) are showing on account today.

For those in Brisbane, head down to the Westfield Garden City concierge near Kmart and get a Westfield gift card. I opted for the Westfield XS giftcard that allows me to use it at any non-Westfield retailer.

I had 8 Amex cards so I purchased a $155.05 card. Add in the $4.95 "activation fee" and the total was $160. I asked them to split the transaction into $20 lots (ie. $20 x 8 = $160).

So basically I paid $80 and got a $155.05 card which equates to roughly 48.4% off.

If you only have 1 Amex, just get a $15.05 gift card instead and the discount will be 33.6%.

    • that's mad stuff! how the hect you got 8 cards? can we ring Westfield garden city to get a phone purchase and pay it by eight cards? as we live in other state

      • Its not hard lee.
In my case I have the Amex Plat Edge card ($149 with a free return Virgin flight) plus 3 supp cards at no charge for wife and two adult kids.(four cards)
We each have a Amex Qantas Discovery Card at no charge.(four cards)
I then have a Woolworths Everyday Qantas Card to use when Amex not taken (Qan FF points on a 1 for 1 basis).
        Works well.

    • Did you get your rebates okay? I see westfield gift cards come up on search engine but no locations are found?

      • Rebates actually don't come through until I call Amex and ask them why I haven't got my rebates yet. The last operator was surprised Westfield was even listed as they're technically not a "small business". I just ask them to search "Westfield" in their map and it shows up.

Surprised when I got email after donating to royal flying doctor service. Charities may be an option for some.

    • +3

Can also confirm I received email after donating to beyond blue

      • +4

50% cashback + 30% or more tax deduction. If that's not a good enough incentive to donate to charity I don't know what is :-)

Qantas have just 'launched' (;-P) a scheme whereby QFF members can book tables at restaurants online (from a searchable list of >2000) and get 150 bonus QFF points per diner… the good thing is, this can be stacked with the current AMEX-SS offer, and the 'Entertainment-Book', at places where all three offers apply. I identified 8 such places, just in the northern suburbs of Melbourne; I'm sure there would be many more than that in the CBD.

I started a new thread about this new QFF offer, with a bit of an emphasis on stacking all three deals/offers, here:
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/168484
I hope it is of some use!

My wife, my 1-year-old son and I tested out this 'hat-trick-deal' idea tonight, at the 'Brandon Hotel', in North Carlton. I booked for us three (young son's first earn for the family; 150 QFF points!!) on the net, then we went straight there. We ordered two mains worth ~$20 each, but got one free with the EB voucher. Because they're on the AMEX-SS list, I'll get $10 back. So we got 450 (+20 for the 'actual' spend; 470) QFF points, and two mains that frankly, were quite a bit more fancy than what we usually splash for, for a grand total of $10. Really nice friendly staff/atmosphere/food too, as it happened!

So if you value the QFF points at ~$4.70 it worked out at a spend of ~$5.30 for $40 'worth' of main courses… and numerous other potential scenarios spring to mind… a bit of a dinner-party out with two other couples for example, could net ~1000 QFF points, 25% off the bill with an EB voucher, and $10 rebate from AMEX.

Slightly off-topic, but I must say I was extremely impressed with the Brandon Hotel, on all fronts. As well as great staff (didn't bat an eyelid at my EB voucher, or my AMEX card) and great food, there's a really relaxing spacious feel about the place… I think it's because the tables are set very widely apart, unlike all the joints on nearby Lygon street etc., where everyone's packed in like sardines.
I'm starting to sound like an ad for them now I spose, but actually I'd never heard of them before I did my little 'bargain hat-trick' search tonight, in which they came up trumps; it's just credit where it's due.

Anyone in Adelaide: Liberty Petrol station on Magill Rd, Magill in on the list, $20 of petrol for $10 :)

Heads up that they do have a 2.5% surcharge though ($0.50 on $20 of petrol) and their premium 98 is a ridiculous $0.21 more expensive than regular unleaded. (Premium 98 150.9/L, regular 129.9/L today)

    (Listed as: MAGILL FUEL
659 MAGILL RD, MAGILL, SOUTH AUSTRALIA, 5072)

    • Anyone have any other good finds in Adelaide?

      • +1

Other petrol stations I haven't tried out:
        LIBERTY PORT
UNITED BLAIR - 369 PROSPECT RD, BLAIR ATHOL, SA
LIBERTY WINDSOR GARDENS - 386 NORTH EAST RD, WINDSOR GARDENS, SA, 5087

        • Liberty Windsor Gardens (SA) was a winner.

Unleaded was 127.2, premium 98 145.2 so only 18 cents more unlike Magill that was 21 cents more. Also no surcharge on American Express unlike Magill.

  • Is Priceline Pharmacy Minto NSW still listed? It was listed in August. But I can't find it now.

    • Yes. we have a surprise $10 credit from Priceline Minto. they might have not remove their own record of this store from last August campaign

      PRICELINE PHARMACY MINTO MARKET PLACE
      Retail & Grocery XXXXXXX -$10.00

  • I went to a participating restaurant last night (Little Thai in Bentleigh East) hoping to take advantage of this deal. The meal was good but when handing my AMEX card to pay was told their link to AMEX was down but I could use "another credit card"!!! Don't know what the arrangement is between American Express and the participating stores but I did wonder if this was just a ploy by the restaurant.

    • +1

Just ring Amex and for sure they will give you a credit.
They want to know about refusals which damage their credibility.

      • +2

Yup, I went to a place that didn't accept it at all, and after reporting them the Amex rep gave me $10 credit anyway in good faith.

Although I've had restaurants using that excuse just to have a go. If you tell them "but I haven't got any other cards and I didn't bring any cash with me" then see how quickly it takes them to suggest that they "reboot the machine" and 2 minutes later say everything's OK again.

        • Do you have the contact details for the Amex rep?

          Thanks

        • @jvdv001:
For what it's worth the name was Sumita Bandopadhyay. I just logged in to my account and used the "email us" function. Didn't get to choose.

        • Just ring them on the number on back of your card.
The operators seem to be well trained with regard to the Shop Small promotion
Just be gentle and you will get the desired result

        • @IanC:
Email also works (through feedback option). They respond within a day or so. As above just tell them nicely and you'll get the credit. Note: In order to read their response (email) there's a slightly painful registration process for security. Alternatively you can simply choose to not read the response and wait for the credit on your account within a week (9/10 that would be their response anyway)

    • +1

This is just a dirty trick by the merchant, there is no such thing as separate line for each credit card…don't let them fool you next time. Just tell them you only have Amex …

      • +1

That's not necessarily true. Some merchants have multiple card machines.

        • It sounds like the owner wasn't claiming multiple machines, but that amex wasn't working (on the single machine/on their system).

  • I was pleased to find that Metro Petroleum at Mowbray Road Lane Cove North had Premium 98 at 149.9c/L.
I noticed that they also had Opal cards at the register. I didn't ask about top-ups.

Northpoint Newsagency 100 Miller Street North Sydney has promo material up.
Initially they declined to accept an Opal topup on Amex claiming they received 2.5% from State Transit and had to pay Amex 3.5%. I offered to pay a surcharge and they put the transaction through.

St Leonards Newsagency is on the list of businesses, but they said they didn't take Amex.

    • So far I have found three stores in my neighborhood listed on the Amex Shop Small site that will not accept American Express. Amex need to update their lists.

      • Another one in Victoria. Went to Oriental Spoon, Melbourne today. They didn't accept Amex as well. End up paying cash.

  • It says: "You can redeem the offer up to 10 times at different Shop Small businesses", so can we only get $10 back once per business?

    • +1

      Yes.

      • Thanks!

    • If they have multiple locations you can use the same card at different locations.

    • Unless u have an additional card I guess

  • I used up all my credits $200 on 2 cards. Might try again just in case it still works.

    • Wont work. Do you have a partner who has an Amex? Use theirs as well.

Between me and the wife we have 6 AmEx cards and I'm busy having a fun time going through them all.

Even managed to pick up a few new Guitar Picks at Camberwell (VIC) Music Junction the other day. On a previous Amex shop small event I got my Guitar stand from them and they split the cost across both AmEx cards so I could maximise my benefit. :-)

    • Do you know if a supplementary card (different number) if registered as well get their own set of 10 credits or do you share the 10 credits between the 2 cards. Couldn't work it out from the Ts&Cs.

      • Spoke to amex 30 mins ago about this point.
At this time I have 23 transactions spread between primary and three supplementary cards
I have 23 credits of $10 each showing on the current statement.
Amex have confirmed TWICE that 10 transactions are allowed on each supplementary card as well as the primary card provided they have different numbers..

        • this is mad. if you mention we split a bill in two transactions payment on two cards, will they okay give you 2 $10 credits? or better not mention it?

        • if you split a bill onto 2 cards with different numbers and they total more than $20 each, yes there will be a $10 credit on each card,

      • 10 each, that's what I've been doing

  • Anyone had any luck using any online retailers? Perhaps something like dishd.com.au might work?

  • WARNING - Check the business even accepts AmEx BEFORE you consume anything requiring payment…

I saw this interesting complaint on the AmEx Australia Facebook Page:

The last THREE business that I have shopped at, and being advertised on your website as being part of the Shop Small promotion have REFUSED by AMEX card, and said they did not accept Amex.

This is both disappointing and embarrassing, at the check out, and very unexpected as you have them currently advertised as being part of the Shop Small promotion!
I made the purchases and reasonably expected to receive 3 x $10 credits based on your advertised website listings and promotional statements.

After my previous three experiences, a further business I visited, also listed as a participating small business, I went to the register area first, and found a prominent sign WE DO NOT ACCEPT AMEX, so I chose not to shop there.
The merchants were Cedars of Lebanon ( Mawson ACT), Jabal Halal Market (Mawson ACT) Chinese Kitchen (Phillip ACT) and Deli Planet (Fyswick ACT)

Whilst I can understand there may be the occasional oversight, to have FOUR businesses advertised in my local area and none of them taking American Express reflects poorly on your company, and has makes the promotion frustrating and a waste of time and effort for me.

    • +2

Amex will honour the $10 credit regardless, just keep your non-Amex receipt and lodge a complaint through amexconnect. I did that on one occasion, others in this thread as well.

      • Ok, good to know :-)
…but it makes a mockery of the whole thing if the store doesn't even accept AmEx

        • +3

"…but it makes a mockery of the whole thing if the store doesn't even accept AmEx"

Dave's advice is prudent, but the Facebook-post pasted in is silly. Businesses can suddenly decide they won't accept AMEX anymore, any time they like. This ShopSmall thing is benefiting thousands of consumers and small businesses, and it's AMEX that's picking up the tab for all of it (many of the businesses that attract the rebate paid by AMEX are not even aware of the scheme). So personally, I reckon it's short-sighted/dopey/selfish of peeps to post comments on their Facebook page directed at AMEX such as "…reflects poorly on your company"; essentially in response to AMEX attempting to give them up to ten payments of $10. As dave has advised, it's not that hard to just ask a retailer if they accept AMEX, before you shop there. By phone even, if you don't want to be disappointed after you get there.

  • Does anyone know when the money will be credited to Amex account? All 5 transactions were listed on my Amex account but the credits were not. Thanks.

    • within 3 days

    • Got the email within an hr. But the money took a while to show up in the account. Around 6 days for me.

    • +2

The SS website says it will take up to 5 days, and all my $10 rebates have been credited within 3 or 4 "business" days (Mon-Fri). Bloody awesome scheme this, for both the consumer AND the small businesses that choose to be involved. I hope it continues repeatedly!

  • Tip for pool owners with multiple cards.
If using a regular pool shop ask if you can top up your account with several $20.00 payments and go into credit and use as and when you need chemicals or service.

    • Good idea! Dunno about pools, but it might be worth asking services-based small businesses if they could issue you with credit.

      • agreed. my pool shop had no problem with 8 credits…

  • So I got 5 amex cards, that means potential cashback of $500…and $1000 worth of OPAL top-ups.

    • You can only add up to $250 on a single card, FYI just in case you weren't already aware.

      • That's why you bought additional opal cards:) the ones from the retailers.opal.com.au

  • How are people going in Perth with this?

I have been successful at Kazzems Pizza Kewdale, Outram St Cafe West Perth, Cafe Bella Rosa Carlisle. The rebate works at Carlisle Liquor Barons but I won't say I was successful because they charged me $51 for something Dans / 1st choice sell for $38.

    • I've used it three times, probably got another two purchases left to do (Kwikfuel, and Indian food wholesaler).

      • Which places did you use it for the three? Thanks

        • A pharmacy, Mondo Butchers, and Bakers Delight.

  • Does anyone know if it matters if you use Paywave (or whatever amex call it)? I just did one and i didn't get the rebate email. The shop fit all the criteria and even had the shopsmall sticker out the front.

    • +2

It shouldn't make any difference using contactless… has worked for me in the past

      • +1

there's a difference, you won't get the email. but you still get the credit.

        • +2

I've only used paywave so far and received the email every time.

        • +1

not getting an email isn't related to paywave. It seems to be random, or related to the card you use (i get the confirmation more reliably with amex rather than bank issued).

        • I got the rebate despite not getting the email :). Maybe it's just a co-incidence that i used paywave on the one transaction that i didn't get the email on.

  • +1

cheap (craft) beer at these participating retailers:

slowbeer is also part of aston club which offers $10 referral credit :)

  • Does anyone know if Harvey Norman Cannington WA is supposed to be on the list? I think it might be an error, because it isn't that small a shop. I bought something there last week (that I needed), but didn't get an email from amex nor received a $10 credit yet. If I call them up, do you think they will give me the $10 credit?

    • l think they will credit you as goodwill gesture but then remove it on the list

  • I checked my account and it is strange.
I made 4 transactions all on the same day, but the account only have 2 of those credited.

Will I eventually get the rest?

    • Generally you will if it is on the Shopsmall listing and especially if you got the email.

Has the Amex expenses hit your bank? I was at Hard Rock Cafe Sydney earlier this week and my Amex accounts were not hit until two days later. I have not received the Email from Amex but as it is on the Shop Small listing, I figure I'll get the credit on both Amex transactions eventually. I've had a few transactions like that.

      • It's alright, just checked my account and the credits appeared.
Slight delay for same day transactions.

  • Can anyone confirm that you can only get 1 discount for each store?

    • +1

That's correct, once per store per card.

  • +4

As a true OZB-er I managed to max out the rebates on both of my cards. On Sunday night just b4 midnight I realised that I had one more strike left on the card. Then it hit me that I could order an Eagleboys pizza (with coupons of course) and set the pick-up time to next week some time. And voila, managed to squeeze the last $10 out of amex.

Look forward to the next promo.

    • Great play gim, I too look forward to the next promo! ThANX AMEX!

    • we managed 42 purchases out of 50 with 5 different cards in our family

      • Can I nominate my baby as a supp card holder??? Hahaha…

  • I deferred my car servicing by a week and got it done today instead of last week and damn the servicing place was listed on shop small. Could have save some more if I wasn't lazy.
