Thanks. This was an awesome deal last year but not as good this year.

Last year the deal was $10 back for a $20 purchase (across five shops) but this year it is only $5 (across 10 shops).

Here are a few restaurants in the MELBOURNE CBD area that I will be considering. I also flagged if it was part of entertainment book or not. My preferences tend towards asian foods but there is a reasonable mix to consider there.

I note that the places in the new Emporium food court do not feature in the deal and old favourites like Mamak last year are not on the list now.

EDIT: Please don't flame me for my choice of food. :-)

      • Won't flame you, will GREEN you (+vote)!

      • Sataybar is okay! Haven't eaten at any of the others.

Oh, Stalactites is open finally? I wonder if they're 24/7 again

      • Mamak
366 Lonsdale St, Melbourne is still on the list!

        • Yeah, so were two other places that I used last year but was not when I checked that day. Very happy to see my Fish and Chip shop back as well as Ferguson Plare Bakery. Time for more $20 Cheesecakes. Hehe.

      • Managed to use it it my local Music store (Music Junction in Camberwell (VIC)) to buy a guitar stand and a few picks for $41 and split the payments across two cards.

      • Also just noticed that most of the wineries in Yarra Valley (VIC) region are on the list. I assume something similar in other states. Going to De Bortoli tomorrow so might use a few AmEx cards to buy a few bottles of Noble One.

  • Is 7-11 included? 25% myki

    • huh??? 25% off myki at 7-11? lol.

      • Yes?

        • oh didn't know that. hmmm.
Any conditions? Does all Melb Stores have this offer available?

        • +2

Yes. You can top up myki at newsagencies that's on the Amex list. I got the rebate last time for topping up myki.

        • +1

          @lplau:
They are referring to $5 off $20 from Amex = 25% off. Not a normal 7-11 promo of 25% off.

        • @puffinfresh: Doesn't work at 7-11, tried that. Definitely does work at Newsagencies. Also worked at my dentist. :)

  • Great deal

  • Good one. Thanks OP!

  • Thanks OP. Finally this cash back is back. Here we go another $200.

  • +3

    Awesome.

Going to lunch at PJ's in Civic today. Entertainment book for BOGOF main meal and now an extra $5 back :D

    • +1

And if whoever goes for lunch with you has an Amex card too… Just split the bill…

  • +3

lssue with this last year is so many small store don't take amex

    • +4

the few ive tried either dont take it or want a 3% surcharge

      • +2

You're still saving a little money even with the 3% surcharge if the amount is small. The idea is to provide some support to local small businesses.

        • +2

How can i support them if they dont accept Amex?.. Kinda feel like I'm only just supporting Amex in getting more small business's to pay their fee's to have the cards accepted. "after the promo" no one ever comes back to use the Amex again and they lose out in fee's thus hurting the small business.

        • +3

You can support them by paying with Visa , MasterCard or simply Cash.

Small business owners are unlikely to be persuaded to accept Amex after a one-off campaign. OTOH those that are already taking Amex will welcome new customers introduced through this campaign.

        • +1

Plus if the person never comes back, that suggests they only went there for the promo, which again would be extra business that business wouldn't have gotten.

        • @EarlyBird:

          Thats true!

    • -2

EDIT: move along, nothing to see.

  • Slightly off-topic. Does anyone know how I can refer my friend to sign up for a Qantas Amex card, that benefits both my friend and me?

    Thanks OP… great post.

    • The best Amex deal (for 1 year) still seems this: http://www.anz.com/personal/credit-cards/rewards-frequent-fl…
Get your friend to buy you a flight from the points they receive.

      • Thanks. I got it myself, but I've suggested it to my friend now too. :)

        • got myself both the FF and FF plat.. lol almost spent the $3000 required to get my 100,000 points

Got my sis the two cards as well for another 100,000 points.. and my brother just the FF one for 50,000

    • I think the referral bonuses are not currently available, may be back later, but not sure.

  • -3

Are there really only 10 shops included? If I do a search on the shops location page, there seems to be more than 10 results

    • I think it means up to 10 uses per card in total

The offer is limited to ten (10) statement credits with no more than one statement credit per business location.

      • Which is $50 maximum discount back from Amex.

        • Um, it should be $50 max per card, not $500, as it is $5 back for up to 10 different locations.

          [EDIT]: Prev poster updated post

    • 10 shops which you can get the rebate for, but there is heaps of shops which is listed which offers the rebate.

Has not come back and probably wont .
    Was a very good deal.

  • +3

Newsagencies that accept AMEX are great for reloading a myki. 25% off public transport!

    • +1

Thanks just did a quick search and found this in Melbourne. There are probably a whole lot more:

      SOUTHGATE NEWS & LOTTO
SHOP P10 3 SOUTHGATE AVE, SOUTHBANK, VICTORIA, 3006

      • Just cross referenced the following two CBD Lotto shops with the myki website. Don't know if they have surcharges for AMEX though. Would be appreciated if someone could report back!

        Swanston Street Lotto
        Shop 3, 227 Collins Street
        Melbourne 3000

        Flinders Lane Lotto
        Shop 5, 280 Flinders Lane
        Melbourne 3000

        • +1

I've been to all 3 last time, they all have surcharges at that time, 2-3%.

        • +2

Just visited the above 2 stores.
Swanston Street Lotto = 3% surcharge
Flinders Lane Lotto = do not accept amex

  • Thanks OP. Good bargain even though it's not as generous as last time.

  • May have missed this in the T&C's but are we able to use the cashback 10 times at the same place as long as its different transactions or does it have to be 10 different places? (ie. If I go to one of the restaurants 10 times within August which is unlikely but just to make the point)

    • +1

Last year it had to be different places. I assume the same for this year. Does not matter so much if you have multiple AmEx cards across the family.

      • Cool, thanks for the info!

  • I am wondering if I come to a cafe and get ket's say a $75.00 bill, then pay 3 x $25. Am I gonna get 3 x $5 credits ($15 in total) OR just one $5 credit ?

    • If all three AmEx cards are registered then no issue to split and you will get $5 x 3.

    • +1

get a $5 credit for each purchase per location.

Many cafe's and restaurants do not allow bill-splitting.

    • +1

it says 10 different places, so you'd need to be using 3 separate registered cards.

    • +1

So to sum it up. One Card per location will get you $5 back if you spend over $20. No repeats.

If you have MULTIPLE registered cards then you can break up the expense across the SEPARATE cards to get the $5 back (as long at each broken up amount is => $20).

Check the Bill Splitting rules before you do it.

  • Sounds good.

    MELBOURNE:

    Cross Reference with this list:

    http://ptv.vic.gov.au/tickets/myki/myki-retail-outlets/

Effectively $50 worth of free myki waiting to be had for every Amex card you own. Not too shabby.

  • yikes i have $50 dollars on my myki……

  • For Sydney, did anyone find any places offering Opal topups and are on the list?

    • +10

Cross referencing the list of Opal retailers from the Opal web site and the retailers listed on the Amex Shop Small map, I came up with the following:

      CBD
Lucky Charm QVB ($2 surcharge for AMEX!!)
Sussex St Convenience Store 368 Sussex St Sydney
Darling Park Newsagency 201 Sussex St Sydney
City Convenience Store 379 Pitt St Sydney
      Ezymart 6 York St Sydney
Connaught Sydney Newsagency 187 Liverpool St Sydney
Sussex Newsagency 151 Sussex St Sydney
Pavillion News 126 Phillip St Sydney

      Pyrmont
Convenience Store Village 38 Harris St Pyrmont

Forget about Lucky Charm though. When I tried there they wanted a $2 fee for AMEX!!! What a rip off.

      • -1

that's allot of work walking around to save $50 lol True Ozbargain style

        • And make sure to do it on your Opal reward day so you can use public transport to get to them all for free :-)

        • +1

@meumax: Or do it during lunch time to rack up cheaper fares for the rest of the week.

      • +1

        Great work mate!

Just to add 1 to the list

SUSSEX ST CONVENIENCE STORE 257 SUSSEX ST, SYDNEY (Seems to have the same name as the 368 Sussex St one)

        • Any Amex surcharge?

      • +1

$1 fee @ City Convenience Store 379 Pitt St Sydney

      • +1

Confirmed no surcharge at Darling Park newsagency. It's off the foyer off the Darlong Park office tower entrance on Sussex st

        • They charged me $0.70

        • @dumdidum: that's strange. When I went there I asked the girl there if there was any surcharge for credit cards. She said there wasn't any except for bus tickets.

        • @meumax:

Methinks they just made a business decision to do just that haha

        • I have been charged $0.7 as well, but still great deal

        • @blitzpaladin: the surcharge is purely based on operator discretion. went to city conven store 25 market st. no charge but the man indicates me should have $1 charge before l walk out

      • +1

No surcharge at City Convenience store 210 Pitt st (Picadilly plaza) but no Opal recharge facility despite what is listed on opal web site. Staff there said they'd have opal capability very soon though.

Forgot to check if they sold gift cards. Might go back and see if they have woolies or coles cards if they don't get opal by the end of the month.

        • Can anyone confirm they got the credit back by spending it on Opal? I read the T&C's on the small business deals and you can't use it to by gift cards. So are opal cards counted like gift cards as money is preloaded onto it?

        • Do other City Convenience Stores around CBD sell Coles/Woolies giftcards? If so,it might worth a try.

        • Got email confirming my cashback as I was walking away from the newsagent.

        • @ksyu223:

I can confirm that I have received the $5 credit from opal top up

      • $1 fee @ Sussex St Convenience Store 368 Sussex St Sydney

      • Pavillion News has a 3% surcharge for amex for bus tickets/opal card topups. They'll waive it if you spend more than $10 on goods in their newsagency though.

      • Ezymart have a $1 surcharge :(

        • got a $0.50 surcharge buying pension tickets 8 x 2.50. Total 20.50 at The Rocks City Supermarket Harrington st

      • +1

Sussex Newsagency 151 Sussex St Sydney have 0 surcharge!

        • can't find 151 sussex st sydney in amex small business network ?

        • @leehungfei: It's still there. Search for 'sussex newsagency' - it's the first hit.

      • 50c fee @ Connaught Sydney Newsagency 187 Liverpool St Sydney

      • No surcharge at
City Convenience Store 379 Pitt St Sydney

  • Thanks OP. Great deal. Was due to top up MYKI for 33 days (Melbourne).
Cross referenced sites listed and found newsagency in South Morang.
If don't accept AMEX, will try couple in town.

  • +3

Thanks. Gonna get a circumcision at Russel Medical Centre, Macgregor.

    • +2

There's an idea. My housemate calls me a Jew when I talk about OzBargain, so why not hit two birds with one stone.

    • +1

get ready to lose 20% feeling down there,

  • +1

Great deal. I registered this morning just in case, paid for lunch at the pub and came back to desk with an email from AMEX saying $5 credited.

    Boom. Love technologies.

  • Search 'petroleum' & 'petrol' for local independents registered for the deal. Several petrol outlets I drive close to regularly are listed.

  • Anyone able to connect to list for Brisbane?.
    Site defaults for me

  • I see the search website is about as useful as it was last year… searching for my local area for dining category merchants gives me results like these within the first 2 pages:

    A S G ENROLMENT CENTRE
UNIT 4 18 BRANDL ST, EIGHT MILE PLAINS, QUEENSLAND, 4113

    SUNSHINE MANAGEMENT SERVICES
SHOP 6, 66 CONDAMINE ST, RUNCORN, QUEENSLAND, 4113

    THE CHOLAKOS FAMILY TRUST
SHOP 3 3360 PACIFIC HWY, SPRINGWOOD, QUEENSLAND, 4127

    BLAKMON ENTERPRISE
UNIT 32 1932 LOGAN RD, UPPER MOUNT GRAVATT, QUEENSLAND, 4122

    OXENBRIDGE HOLDINGS PL
SHP 16 590 MOUNT GRAVATT, CAPALABA RD, WISHART, QUEENSLAND, 4122

    • Yeah. I had to zoom in a bit on the Melbourne CBD zone and then click the right arrow to see what else was near that zone.

Many of the Melbourne places I went to last year are no longer on the list. This includes:
      - Mamak
      - Fergusons Bakery
      - Middle Camberwell Fish and Chips

Bit annoyed but I guess those places decided to not stick with AmEx this year.

      • Or not classified as small businesses any more.

        • Looks like the three places that were not there on the 1 August are now on the list. Yay!

  • +3

I ordered a couple of pints tonight. $10.40 each, so $20.80… which would have then been $15.80 after the AMEX credit.
The only problem was, they only charged me $18. Never before have I been upset after being undercharged.

    • +1

That's funny Puffinfresh. I had a slightly similar problem in the Sydney Belgian bier cafe and I was trying to hit the $50 value to get the $10 back from Amex. I was by myself and don't really drink so I was ordering the most expensive steak, added extras sides, a few soft drinks and dessert which stuffed my to the gills just so I could reach that elusive $50.

Imagine my 'smack in the face' surprise when I didn't get the $10 from Amex because I forgot to add the deal from my tripadvisor account. Grrrr.

Also, Neoika, I'm assuming you are trying to be funny.

    • I think to test, you should order a few more pints, until they get it right :p

      *Drink responsibly of course >_>

    • +1

Ummm so weird thing. I just recieved a $5 credit for the transaction, despite it being under $20. I never got an email from AMEX saying it was coming.

      Bank error in my favour?

  • There seem to be a lot of Pharmacies covered in my area, and so will get my scripts filled (Now and again at the end of the month). Thanks OP.

  • Thanks Op. As mentioned in first comment, not as good as last year's offer which was more, but it's still good.
