    • -3

      Congratulations! You win…

      • -5

Hmm… looks like somebody didn't appreciate my veiled suggestion that one should read before commenting. Maybe it was the way I said it… :p

        • -1

Hey quops, are you aware that the main link available after you click the

          "… and this information,"

bit of your post yields: 'URL No Longer Exists'

        • -2

Nope… the link should be to http://www1.amexnetwork.com/au/about?issuerName=au_amexnetwo…, and I've just clicked it and it works for me.

        • @quop:
Just checked again, same result. The link is this:

          http://www1.amexnetwork.com/au/home?issuerName=au_amexnetwor…

        • -2

          @quop:

That link you've posted goes to this:

"Special Cardmember offers and experiences can be found at the American Express Network and are updated frequently, so check back often. (etc.)"

Your post is of course a good one, but what I am trying to tell you is that the link therein (indicated by bold type in the excerpt I've included above, in this comment) is a dead link. So perhaps rather than (rather flippantly) flipping dudes off, it may be wiser to ensure that the links you are linking to are … well… linked.

          Chuckle ;P

        • -2

          @GnarlyKnuckles:
No, the link I posted (http://www1.amexnetwork.com/au/about?issuerName=au_amexnetworkdefault#q1) goes to this:

WHAT IS THE AMERICAN EXPRESS NETWORK?

Millions of merchant establishments around the world accept Cards that are part of the American Express Network. These Cards include those issued and serviced directly by American Express, as well as those issued and serviced by leading financial institutions pursuant to a license from American Express.

I've bolded those parts that form the main basis for me linking to that information, ie it is used to support my statement: "the offer should apply to all bank and Amex issued Amex cards" (because the offer is provided by the American Express Network / information hosted on their website).

What I didn't realise when replying to your first comment (though I'm not sure it was all that clear without the additional clarification in your followup comment) is that you're actually referring to a dead link in another part of the FAQ, viz the second question, which has a different URL (http://www1.amexnetwork.com/au/about?issuerName=au_amexnetworkdefault#q2) to that which I posted, and is entirely unrelated to my purpose for linking q1.

So, me being flippant/flipping you off? Not at all what I was going for, but if that's how you choose to paint me, that's your prerogative.

And whilst I appreciate your advice that "it may be wiser to ensure that the links you are linking to are … well… linked", I confess to being at a loss as to:

          1. Why you expect me to ensure that the links I'm not linking to are … well … linked.
          2. Why you yourself link to a link that is not linked to the link I linked.

          Chuckle?

  • +5

Can't see where to register either. Much better than the last offer of $5 off for $20 spend. Bring it on.

EDIT: Just noticed "Register from 1 November 2014", assume we won't be able to see where to register until then, but happy if anyone can show me where before then.

  • From previous shop smalls all amex cards including bank issued ones work.

  • Thanks for sharing.

  • Awesome! :D

  • +1

Thanks AMEX, the last time this was on, discovered a little Fish n Chips shop a little away with great reviews. Loved the food so much, this has become a regular for us now.

    • Care to share? Never seen one accept AMEX before. Thanks

      • +1

        definitely, just PM'ed you

        • Which place is this? Sounds good.

        • PM me too!

      • +6

        People, people - calm down! It's just a fish n chip shop…

…that takes amex?? ooh ooh pm me! This i gotta see

        • +1

The OP is in Melbourne, so perhaps not convenient for you.

  • +1

Frequently get surprised by where this applies - had to pay a gap for GP visit and it qualified, LOL. It's worth registering against this possibility alone.

  • -6

So nobody can register till November 1st? I'm certainly interested but this is a bit premature to post as a deal isn't it?

    • -7

ORLY? In that case you'll love this special registration link just for you. It will be active on November 31st, so make sure you don't click on it prematurely!

    • +5

      and MyKi credit!

      • except i've yet to find a newsagent in melbourne cbd that accepts amex without a surcharge. any tips?

        • +6

          Pay the surcharge.

        • +1

I don't mind to pay the surcharge as long as they accept amex card so that I can get the $10 statement credit.

        • 7 eleven accepts Amex without surcharge.

        • @Melbournian:
7 Eleven is not usually part of Shop Small

        • @roughana:

          "Pay the surcharge."

          The TCs say this:

"American Express Card Members will not be able to redeem this offer at merchants who are not accepting, differentially surcharging and suppressing American Express Cards."

So it would seem that the offer does not apply anywhere that applies a surcharge specifically to an AMEX card.

    • -1

What do you mean by OPAL time? Opal Card does not accept Amex!

    • Which small businesses can you top up your opal?

    • +12

[Reposting from my original post in https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/155001]

Let's see if we can add to the list for this deal.

Cross referencing the list of Opal retailers from the Opal web site and the retailers listed on the Amex Shop Small map, I came up with the following:

      CBD
Lucky Charm QVB ($2 surcharge for AMEX!!)
Sussex St Convenience Store 368 Sussex St Sydney
Darling Park Newsagency 201 Sussex St Sydney
City Convenience Store 379 Pitt St Sydney
      Ezymart 6 York St Sydney
Connaught Sydney Newsagency 187 Liverpool St Sydney
Sussex Newsagency 151 Sussex St Sydney
Pavillion News 126 Phillip St Sydney

      Pyrmont
Convenience Store Village 38 Harris St Pyrmont

      • Thanks! You legend!

      • +5

I actually physically walked around to about half these places last Sunday (2/11) to top up and only managed to top up at 4 places: Sussex St Convenience Store (368 Sussex St), City Convenience Store (379 Pitt St), Ezymart (6 York St) and Sussex Newsagency (151 Sussex St). Here's a list that I generated based on what was most efficient (from a walking point of view). You could either go from bottom to top, or top to bottom. You either kind of end up walking from CBD South to CBD North (top to bottom) or vice versa.

I've posted opening hours and AMEX surcharges where I was able to obtain that informataion.

        • 1) Connaught Sydney Newsagency ; Address: 187 Liverpool St - Mon-Sat 6am-5:45pm, Closed Sundays
        • 2) City Convenience Store ; Address: 379 Pitt St ; Charges $1 surcharge for opal top ups, open Sundays
        • 3) Sussex St Convenience Store ; Address: 368 Sussex St ; Charges $1 surcharge for opal top ups, unless you buy anything (I think they sell coffee for $1)
        • 4) Darling Park Newsagency ; Address: Shop 1, 201 Sussex St - couldn't find this one
        • 5) Sussex Newsagency ; Address: 151 Sussex St ; Charges $1 surcharge for opal top ups (the woman told me I'd be charged $1 surcharge but I think she forgot..)
        • 6) Clarence Newsagency ; Address: Shop 1, 135-151 Clarence Street ; Mon-Fri 06:15-17:00
        • 7) Ezymart ; Address: 6 York Street ; Open Sundays, was charged $0.50 for Amex payment (although it says $1.50 for Amex for transport tickets and the guy said "I'll do it for $0.50 for you" - weird)
        • 8) No 1 Margaret Street Newsagency ; Address: Shop 2, 1 Margaret St ; closed Sunday, no opening hours displayed - physically located on Clarence St, next to priceline
        • 9) Pavillion News ; Address: 126 Phillip St ; Mon-Fri 7:30am-6pm, Closed weekends, 3% AMEX surcharge

Of the list that I compiled, I only didn't make it to Darling Park Newsagency (4) and Pavilion News (9).

There are a handful of other EzyMarts that I've seen in Sydney CBD that I don't think are on the list for the shop small promotion. For example, one on George St opposite Great Southern Hotel, another one near the backpackers places on Eddy Ave.

edit: If anyone else wants to search/help add to the list, you type "newsagent", "newsagency", "convenience" and you'll find a whole bunch of them. The list above is for the CBD.

        • We have a discussion going on at below thread for opal top us places in sydney CBD
          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/168362

        • 2) Wouldn't accept my amex after I my Opal had been topped up (I didn't ask about amex beforehand, since others had had success)

          4) Is on the ground floor in between the two towers.

  • thanks..

  • Yay! This is even better than the previous promotion.

    • +7

And yet still not +ve worthy?

  • Probably been asked 100 times but what is the recommended Amex to apply for? These offers are becoming so frequent it's annoying for a non-amexer!

    • +2

plat edge and qan or virgin discovery card (nil fee) work for me as both cards seem to get most of the good deals.
2 free flights with plat edge covers the fee and supplementary cards are free which can be useful.

      • Great thanks. Question: Is one Ascent rewards point equal to one Velocity or Qantas FF point?

      • +2

        may be of use
        http://www.pointhacks.com.au/american-express-membership-rew…
the qan card gives 1 for 1,
it all depends if you are a serious spender and points collectorr or just want a card for access to the deals
.the plat edge card(at least mine ) seems to get more of the better deals,

        • Really useful guide. Will be a good read.

    • +1

ANZ kills them all - I get 3 points per $

      • Same with CBA Diamond

        • Good to know elektron - you can also cash your points for cashback straight into your account at ANZ (I get back about $3000 a year cash from redeeming points) - does the CBA Diamond do that? (genuine question).

      • Depends what the conversion rate to frequent flyer points and gift rewards are…

  • thanks OP..

  • +1

Buying stamps at newsagent is a good idea

  • Our shop is one of them :-P

  • +5

Back to $10 off? Awesome. I figured that they will make it $2.50 for the next promo after going from $10 to $5 lol.

  • only used 3/10 of my credits last time this rolled around (various eateries I visit) seemed most places I go don't accept amex or weren't part of the offer. Any recommendations for places where's i'll make good on this deal next time? I don't use public transport so myki topup isn't of use to me. (I'm in melbourne)

    • Same. But I had forgotten that if I had kept the receipt and notified Amex, they would still honor the rebate. People did that in the first and second promos and posted at Ozbargain. As long as the biz is listed on their website I guess.

    • Burch and Purchese, Ganache chocolate, Great Eastern Grocery Store

  • Thank you

  • -5

Admit this time the AMEXnetwork is very needy for our money

  • -4

Howto register? Can't find link, anyone can help me?

    • Have to wait until 1st November

    • +6

We can't help you. We wish we could. But it's hopeless. Only mentioned about 5 times now. You're too far gone

  • Will the $100 limit be applicable to both main and supplementary cards? Or will it $100 for each?

    • Each registered card. If you can register your cards separately then they will both qualify.

  • If I go to 7 eleven to top up my Opal card with $100 (5 x $20 transactions) AMEX will credit me $50. Is that correct?

    • +3

No, because 7-Eleven is not a small business in this promotion.

      • okay but my statement would be correct if I go to a dealer that is part of this promotion?

        • No, because you only get one $10 statement credit per participating small business.

        • okay so I have to go to 5 different stores and top it up in each with $20 to get the $50 credit?

        • @liquid metal:

Go to one store ..spend $20 and you will get $10 credit.
two different stores… spend $20 at each .. get $20 credit total etc …up to 10 different stores for $100 credit
register as many cards as you have and repeat the deal.

[Note: Reposted from my original post here (with some new places added in): https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/155001]

Here are a few restaurants in the MELBOURNE CBD area that I will be considering. I also flagged if it was part of entertainment book or not. My preferences tend towards asian foods but there is a reasonable mix to consider there.

I note that the places in the new Emporium food court do not feature in the deal.

Need Shopsmall list for Sydney… the one I know participated in the last shop small event are:
Kogan (not on the list but got $5 back last time)
    Cincotta Chemist Glebe
Lang Suan Chatswood Westfield (perfect for frozen curries)
Super Bowl Haymarket (discount for take-aways before 5pm)
    Dollar King Haymarket
Dae Jang Kum (listed but not confirm)
    Bangkok Capitol Square
    Encasa (listed but not confirm)
    Makoto World Square
Ogalo City (listed but not confirm)
    Priceline Pharmacy Chatswood

If you know there are more retailers/restaurants that accepts Amex ('cos some are listed but they do not accept Amex at all) near Sydney CBD, please let me know. Thanks.

    • I wonder if any retailer that accepts Amex, who hasn't negotiated some kind of contract/discount rate with Amex qualifies for this promo. I was definitely very surprised last time to find out that my (non-bulk billing) GP was qualified for Shop Small.

    • Hmmm, Priceline Pharmacy Chatswood… Possibly applies to other stores too.

      • Can't find priceline in the business finder thing :( The only one I can see is in VIC

    • Priceline Pharmacy Chatswood: Westfield or Chase?

      • I remember the Westfield one was on the list last year but not anymore. It may still work.

        • it will not work. last campaign in sept used it

      • Westfield. I spent $20+ in this store in the last two Shop Small event. Not sure 100% and I will try again this time.
Just found some more restaurant on the list:

        Mamak
        Arisun
        Dae Jang Kam Chatswood
Cincotta Neutral Bay and Five Dock
        Hurricane Express Chatswood

Freakycat, i can confirm cannot get reward from priceline chatswood

    • Does anyone know where in Chatswood I can top-up Opal and get $10 back?

      • Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be any. The only shop in Chatswood that is on both list is Supanews in CC but it didn't accept AMEX when I went there.
