    • I took a 15 mins detour to this place, but the guy didn't accept AMEX.

OP, you can update your post now.

just recharged at pavilion news(3% $0.60) and st james pharmacy($0). Real awesome people dealing there. Bought some gum from the pharmacy to support them having no surcharge.

    • The St James Pharmacy is possibly the only retailer in the City which needs greater recognition. Tucked away in the corner of the City, they truly live up to expectation and should garner greater respect and notoriety for their excellent no fuss service.

      • St James have stopped. They don't accept AMEX. Also refer their website.

      • You mean their excellent NIL service.

    • Stay clear! Woman went A-WALL at St James Pharmacy.

      • +1

        what happened?

        • +1

Yes, what happened? The guy was so calm and pleasant.

  • Just to re-iterate other successful posts:
Topped up myki (2 AMEX cards) at these two locations during the past 7 days
Zouki Convenience at RMH - $0 surcharge
Gertrude St Foodworks - $0 surcharge

Planning to top-up at the following apparent $0 surcharge places over the next week
    Daily News on Collins
    Amcal on 380 Lygon St
    Docklands Victoria Harbour Newsagency

    • Gertrude St Foodworks - would only allow me to use 1 Amex card.

  • Has anyone had credits applied for 2 IGA's? (same AMEX card)

    • Not me. I received it for IGA Putney but not Darlinghurst. I shopped at Putney first.

    • I have not received the email or credit from the Darlinghurst IGA transaction on 11 Nov. whereas I received both from the Oxford St. newsagency across the street so unless it doesn't send out email but credit is still tardy, I don't think it is participating and ought to please be struck from the list, thanks.

  • East Bentleigh Tatts 761 Centre Rd East Bentleigh

I went there yesterday - topped up my mykie - 60c (3% surcharge).

No email confirming $10 credit. They don't appear on the shop small map.

How do I get my $10 credit? Amex Connect contact us?

  • Middle Brighton newsagency 75-77 Church St Brighton ?

This does not appear on shop small map. But they have a Shop Small Amex sticker on front window. Is it safe to spend on Amex there or will the $10 credit not be forthcoming? They have mykie top ups (though have not gone in to find out whether amex accepted and at what surcharge)?

    • I've visited Middle Brighton Newsagency and have received the credits safely.

      • Still $.60 surcharge?

        • I wasn't charged a surcharge when I visited.

  • +1

Murrumbeena Newsagency - not accepting AMEX despite on the website. I tried asking if they accept AMEX - Nope is the answer.

    • I can confirm this too. Murrumbeena Newsagency doesn't accept Amex.

  • Can confirm Summit Convenience Store on City Rd, Southbank, are happy to take Amex for Myki credit, no surcharge.

  • +2

Hey I've made a map of the Melbourne Myki ones - just for the city, I THINK it's editable by anyone (that's how I set it up) add more if you like but being without a car, only Melb interests me.

    https://www.google.com/maps/d/viewer?mid=zDBpy8hN_xW8.knax8r…

NOTE: Just Melb CBD for the time being - add more as you like

  • Melbourne Collins Place News and Lotto charged me $1 for using AMEX. Was told it is a 3% surcharge however became a "minimum $1" surcharge when I went to pay. Guessing their rule is "3% or $1" depending on whatever works in favour to them.

    • Pfft, as if it costs them $1 to process a $20 Amex transaction. That's a joke.

  • Can someone please confirm if they have received the credit for their transaction at Fastway Convenience Store,27 Park St,Sydney

    • +1

      Yes

      • thanks mate.

  • Just done 2 Opal card recharges at St James Pharmacy.
    They are really nice there.

    Tapped and no email.
Chip/PIN and I got my email.

    • And how that has changed! They are not really nice in there at all. Stay clear.

      • A bit harsh..these people must have processed hundreds of transactions for TAs like us, not merely making no money, but costing themselves hundreds in the process.

I can well understand why they'd be sick of it.

        • -2

So you are allowed to provide negative service if you are sick of providing a service that you are suppose to? With regards to costing, maybe they should take it up with Amex Shop Small. They would have received alot of traffic into a somewhat quiet store. You wanted exposure, AMEX has provided that, instead of embracing it, well you service them negatively. Great work, St James Pharmacy. Bring on Priceline, bring on Chemist Warehouse! Plenty around/closeby to St James Pharmacy. If the small shop (in this case St James Pharmacy) doesn't want to provide service, go to the big chains where most of us expect zero service besides "Next!" - at least they do it with a smile and their pricing will be much more competitive to St James Pharmacy!

        • @deal junkie: Sounds like you're a little mad. :)

        • @deal junkie:

I'm with JohnHowardsEyebrows. I don't think a negative change in attitude due to being OzBargained deserves this degree of KILL IT WITH FIRE attitude.

Sure, as a customer it sucks, but I imagine it sucks to be in their shoes too. The whole point of a small business is that they're small, and it's not really fair to say that they should just suck it up when on the receiving end of a shitstorm because of the supposed "increased traffic" like as if most people did anything other than Opal top ups and they made millions from increased sales.

I think just a calm, casual "this place is off the list" would be sufficient.

  • Just left Demarte's Amcal Chemist Carlton, she wouldn't let me do more than one trasaction. So only able to use 1 Amex for $20 top up

    • Also to add:

Collins place news and lotto top up successful $0.60 surcharge per card
Essendon Pharmacy success top up no surcharge

  • Grocery Zone Park charging $2 extra today

  • Redfern Convenience Store on Redfern Street do Opal top up with $1 surcharge. Got the email straight away.

  • Opal Recharge
    Epping Convenience Centre 17 oxford Street Epping 2121: 2.2% 20 $ topup-0.44 Cents surcharge
SOCIETY CONVENIENCE STORE 169 Phillip St, Sydney NSW 2000: 1 $ surcharge on 20 top-up

Email received instantly in both the cases

    • hi mate, just wondering did you get an instant reply email when you topped up at the Epping Convenience store?
I just topped up and havent received anything.. :|

    • Auindie, have you received the credit for Epping Convenience Centre? b00tyman recharged at Epping Convenience and did not receive any email from Amex. I asked because I am going to top up at Epping today. Please reply.
b00tyman - I just checked shopsmall Amex web, Epping Convenience centre is not listed in the shopsmall.

  • +3

Just another confirmation that Victoria Harbour Pharmacy & News Docklands and Daily News on Little Collins both accepted AMEX for 2 x $20 myki top-ups with no surcharge.

    • confirmed. these are the best two places in Melb cbd / docklands with no surcharge.

  • +3

Confirmed Darling Park Newsagency, 201 Sussex St, Sydney - $0.80 surcharge. Immediate E-mail confirmation.

  • I can confirm that I went to Middle Brighton newsagency today and filled two mykis. No surcharge for amex. I also went back to Malvern newsagency where I had filled my myki twice previously and they have now put up a sign 3% surcharge for amex. This is despite them having the shop small signage prominently displayed. I was changed 60 cents there today.

    • Just to clarify, we're only entitled to the $10 back once per store, right?

      • Correct

        • Phew! I thought I was missing out big time by not doing it daily for a moment.

  • +1

    Can confirm:
Artarmon Welcome Mart, 120 Hampden Road, Artarmon for $1
+1 for Convenience at the Cove in Lane Cove, however I was charged only $0.50 to top up

  • +1

Just want to confirm that NSW Convenience Store in 119a Macquarie St Parramatta accepts AMEX for Opal recharges, but it has a $1 surcharge, not $0.60 as noted here.

    • The owner must increased the surcharge. I recharged there &paid $0.60 surcharge 3 weeks ago. Every merchant want a higher cut of the shopsmall promotion. So greedy !

      • There was a sign behind the counter that said $0.60 surcharge for Opal recharge via card payments, and written in red just below that was "$1 surcharge for AMEX payments".

  • Just having a look at the Melbourne lists. Can anyone confirm if they have received the credit after purchasing myki money from MCS, Elizabeth pharmacy and the South Yarra Newsagency? The reason I ask is because I was trying to look up these shops in the amex small shop map and can't find them on the map at all.

    • I'm gonna hit them all up this Thursday, 7 stores or so, $140 spend with apparently $70 refund.
EDIT: Well up to $150 spend due to surcharges but still, "free" $60

  • this is amazing for people in cbd, so many of them. i am hitting the maximum refund $100!

  • +1

Just tried at Ezymart 52 Martin place.
Lady said that they are not accepting AMEX anymore.

    • same, they said they have change the machines and can no longer accept amex….

  • Confirmed Darling Harbour View, 24-26a Erskine Street, Sydney - $1.00. No email confirmation but received cashback within 48 hours.

  • +4

City Convenience - 580 George St Sydney
City Convenience - 614 George St Sydney

Both tried to charge $2 surcharge for Amex, I walked away.

    • damn that two places im planning to go tomorrow.

    • +1

Amazing at the way the Melbourne vendors have generally either accepted Amex no problem, or not at all, where Sydney vendors have turned it into a money grab.

      • fyi, those areas of george st sydney is near chinatown. hint hint

        • +3

fyi, that was a casual racist statement. hint hint

        • +1

its actually the Sydney CBD to be more specific, where generally you find businessmen/women who have generally have less time & more money, so hence they pay the fee. Hence the fee is higher!!

re: eisniwre Also your comment would be kind of invalided, So there is no Chinatown in Melbourne??

        • +2

@airpoe: The pharmacy that charges $1 is all Anglo, but the newsagent on Little Collins that charges nothing is owned and run by Chinese.

          Stereotype given doesn't check out.

  • +1

Thanks OP!!!! Let me put some effort for Victorian, too.
I went to the following 9 shops and confirmed they are listed Shop Small website. If you are on the road between Malvern to City. This will help you.
Surcharge is based on $20 recharge.
Best to pay by inserting/ swipe card with PIN instead of tab & pay.
Best to obtain receipt for both Myki recharge & merchant terminal.
Statement Credit confirmation emails are received 8/9 of the following shops. Missing one is Waverley Road Authorised Newsagency. Resolving with AMEX at the moment.

Business Name Address Phone Listed Surcharge
    South Yarra News & Lotto 102 - 108 Toorak Road, South Yarra 9820 1144 Yes $1.00

Wattle Park Newsagency 164A Elgar Rd, Box Hill South 9808 1614 Yes $1.00
    • Was going to go to Elizabeth Pharmacy but couldn't find it on the Shop Small Map at all. Did you get a confirmation from AMEX when you bought your myki credit off them?

      • It works. Done it three times.

        • Thanks. Will get some credit tomorrow then.

    • I visited Waverley Road Authorised Newsagency earlier today. Despite their doors being boldly emblazoned by Amex Shop Small stickers I was simply told too many people had asked the same question regarding myki top-ups with Amex, and that they don't do that.

  • +5

Thought I'd share my experience: i did my walk around city today using the map made by phil1311 and comments in here. I created a map of all the stores I went to:
    https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=zl4ylr0zAiUg.kxg2qk1U…

    Legends:
    * Purple - $0 Surcharge
    * Light Blue - < $1
    * Green - $1
    * City Convenience Hunter Street (slightly darker green) - $1.5
    * Yellow - Response Machine was not working
    * Red - No OPAL Topup or No AMEX
    * Brown - There was also a city convenience on the corner of Hunter and Castlereagh which does Opal and accepts AMEX (had a shopsmall sticker), but charges $2 - which I did not try.

Of the 10 I did top up at, here are the ones I received email confirmation from:
    - Darling Park Newsagency
    - City Convenience 25 Market St (City group and trad in email)
    - Pavilion News
    - City Convenience 136 Castlereagh St (City Convenience in email)
    - Fastaway Convenience (Darling Harbour MIMI Mart in email)

  • +1

    Bit late to the party.

The two listed EZYMART shops at Bondi Junction charged a surcharge of $0.70 each.

  • ST James Pharmacy is now free for the 1st card, and $2 for each card there after.

    • Bastards, that's bullshit! Just plain ripping off.

      • No it's not. It would cost then $1 each time they put through the fees, which is more than they would make off Opal. To offer it free on one charge is more than reasonable.

  • Recharged OPAL this morning at Nextra in Chatswood and Welcome Mart (Spar) in Artarmon. Both still charging $1. Chap in Artarmon told me afterwards that I didn't need to top up as I already had $85 on the card. A queue was forming so I didn't explain.

  • Just wanted to report in, all seven Melbourne CBD locations done.
    Skipped the Docklands, too far.

Charged $1 or 60c at most locations except 452 little Collins and 163 city road.

Got all seven emails and now, I totally want a second card! As a poor person, these savings are good!

    • One more thing.
Don't know if it's cause I created it, or just opened it recently, but Google maps overlayed the map I created up the top there.
Right over the top of my standard Android Google maps application
I don't even think I've clicked that link on my phone previously. Very handy.

  • sorry if this is a silly question but does anyone know if you can do multiple transactions at the same shop same or different days . I have tried to top up my opal at the same news agency and it worked the first time but not second or third ( no email received) just wondering before I go can spend more without the benefit.

    • +1

99.9 sure only once per shop

      • +2

I'll spot you the extra 0.1%. You can definitely only use the one card once per shop.

  • Please add Piedemonte's IGA to the list. 37-49A Best Street, North Fitzroy, VIC, 3068

they don't charge for myki top up.

Generally I've found that most IGA's don't charge extra for amex myki top ups.

    • Ah nicely spotted. Did you get an email/credit?

      • yes. i'll be back there again on monday. hahaha.

  • St James Pharmacy , Sydney CBD not accepting OPAL recharges any more… guy rejected badly saying we r nt doing it anymore :(

  • +2

St james pharmacy put up a sign on the window saying that they would not do opal transactions for amex.

    • zzyss, is it Epping in NSW? I cannot find Tinita Pty Ltd on Amex shopsmall map?
