damn i saw the title and for a nano thought it was a dual 5 1/4" floppy drives.. nostalgia was overflowing !

    • 5 1/4" floppy drives..?? That shows how old you are :D

Would go well with two sets of the ES20's for a surround setup. Only issue is that their subs are 110V only. We pay 3 times as much for subs in Australia….

    • I own a pair of ES20's myself - great speakers. Ideally, I'd love the whole set. Have been eyeing up the 12" sub, they did sell it on Amazon.de with shipping to Aus for awhile, it seems they've taken the overseas shipping option away now - regardless, it's nowhere as cheap as what you could get it for on Amazon US though.

      • Yeah, I love my ES20's. Really good sound.

They're a decent price as well, same price as the center speaker in the deal.
AUD 577.78 for all three front speakers.

Although, a couple of years ago with dollar parity and fixed freight pricing from Amazon, that would have been about half the cost.

@KentT: I know. A brilliant person put up a post back then :)

        • @KentT: contemplating getting these front 3. Do you know how they would compare to a set of Dali Zensor 1's? On paper the frequency response of the JbL is much better, however the Dalis seem to be rated highly everywhere

          @thereisriceandcurry:
I have a Dali Zensor Vokal Centre speaker and I'm quite happy with it.

          I'd go Dali.

I like the aesthetic more. Especially with the grille off, the Dali's look pretty schmick. It's difficult to tell from promo photos, but the JBLs can look quite plastic

          http://medias.audiofanzine.com/images/normal/jbl-es20-506648…

The spec that looks better on the JBL is the high frequency. They've basically added an extra tweeter on top of the normal one. If you're over 25 you likely won't hear it at all.

The Dalis go a bit deeper. That's much more noticable, especially for a centre speaker as less of boomy male voices get shifted to the subwoofer.

I bought my Dali a year ago from JB Hifi during one of their regular 40% off speaker sales - $268.80 in November 2014.

        • @KentT: As I thought so too, although the 3db drop at 40khz is impressive, I doubt it would translate to audible differences, as you have mentioned. Thanks, I think I might hold out until one of their sales and pick up the Centre and their Zensor 1 bookshelves to make my front stage

  • These seem really good. Only a 3db drop by 40khz is amazing.
I know its really important to have your front stage matched in acoustics, so it would be awesome if these came with matching L+R

    • I have a seperate brand for my fronts - in fact, it was a matching brand I swapped it out to install this bad boy. The sound quality now is night and day compared to my other speaker. I think it really depends on the quality of the speaker you're replacing it with, in my case the two fronts are great quality and the center was completely lacking.

      • Yeah, I have been contemplating replacing my centre. I have a jamo setup, but my centre speaker does not have much bass, so the dialog feels a bit underpowered.

        • I think you're on the same boat with you. I have an el cheapo Jamo H426 which I purchased from Amazon for USD 125 in 2012. I agree that Jamo's centre speaker has tiny sound and I was wondering whether it's a good idea to mix and match with this JBL centre.

I don't know what to do - I'm really torn. Should I do as any OZBargainers would do? Buy now, think (regret) later LOL?

      • From what I understand, the front stage should be matched. Yes, obviously if you replace a centre speaker for a better one, it will sound better, but you may find that as sounds pan across the front they are not matched. I think anyway. Because there may be gaps in the frequency curves.

But still, im seriously considering buying this haha

At the moment i have an ooollld pioneer all in one HTD8 system, and am looking over the next few months to totally replace. So I guess this would be a great start. Will just have to try source some matching speakers though. Could you guys recommend any?

Also, I can see on amazon it says this model has a never version…would the new one be much better? As this one seems to be a few years old…

Hey, those were pretty cool back in the day when people still used DVDs and CDs.

And you can upgrade gradually and use that with new speakers - but not the other way around, the old Pioneer speakers could well damage a new standard av receiver.

Speakers don't really get much better sounding, they mostly just change the design every few years - partly for fashionable aesthetics, partly for manufacturing changes and optimisations.

But yeah, that's why these are cheap. They're on clearance from the manufacturer, it's not an Amazon sale.

So if you want a complete set for the ES range, best get it all while you can.

        • @KentT: Thanks for the reply :) I actually just use the HTD8 as a reciever - it has a nice SPDIF in which is hooked up to my WDTV that sends through DD and DTS Core from DTS MA so it works well for a decade old box. And you are right, I think I will gradually upgrade. Although reading into it, I might hold out for one of the JB sales and pick up a Dali front stage. That and get a Corsair RM450 to power my JL Audio A1400 to run my JL Audio 12W3V3 haha

        • @KentT: gosh they are cheap. How much would it cost to ship to Sydney you'd reckon?

        • +2

          @cheapbloke:
I don't think JBL America are allowed to sell outside their region.

Speakers are expensive to ship, exchange rate is terrible, and if you try to bundle to save freight, you might go over the $1000 limit and get stuck with customs and GST.

If it's not on Amazon, trying to buy large items from the US is more trouble than it's worth. For both buyer and seller.
