Moving from Apple to Android or Android to Apple - who has shifted from one to the other?

This post had me thinking about switching between the 2 main phone OS's.

I was with apple on my old iPhone 1. but then moved to android.

I'm sticking to android because it does everything I want and the price of a new handset is awesome.

Some people love iOS and will stick by it.

what is the general trend in OZbargainland regarding ownership of phones based on operating system?

what's your reasoning for switching or switching back from one OS to the other?

i started on android on galaxy s1 before then was just nokia phones.

at the extreme prices of the iphone 6 plus and 6s plus i don't think ill ever go to iphone when i can spent less the half and get an LG g4 which does more.

  • Really depends on how invested you are in one or the other. Apps wise don't really matter, but if you have heaps of music and videos purchased p, it's hard to move from one to the other

I was using iPhone from 1 to 4 then moved to android. Never had music or videos, had some apps, but android were mainly free those apps

Would've been interesting to have options for people who haven't moved so you can gauge the percentage of people who have switched…

    • And expose the diehards from all sides, I'd like to see that also.

  • I went from my iPhone 5S to Xiaomi Redmi Note 2.
I really enjoy android for about 6 months then go back to apple and vice versa. I have stayed with apple longer than android due to the simplicity/reliabilty and ease to use.

All my android devices have always been rooted and had experimented with custom roms
I am enjoying the extra battery life on my android also….

I think the iPhone 6's and 6S are just too highly priced to consider at the moment, android phones are much better value for money.

I briefly flirted with the original Nexus 7 tablet, but I switched 'proper' from iPhone 5 to Nexus 5. I switched back to an iPhone 6 a year later. (now on a 6S through New Phone Feeling, that work pays for.)

Android certainly has its advantages but I got sick of micromanaging apps w/things like Greenify, terrible battery+camera (admittedly a N5 problem rather than an Android platform problem), certain apps that either weren't as good as their iOS counterparts (Tweetbot 4 lyfe) or completely missing (games), or wasting an entire weekend on XDA testing a bunch of custom ROMs and kernels and tweaks, all for perceived 'freedoms' I didn't really utilise when all was said and done. YMMV.

My iPhone is admittedly boring, but it's one thing I don't have to worry about, and Apple have always done well by me with customer service — I had one iPhone replaced whilst on holiday in Europe, and another while I lived in Canada, no issues about them being Australian stock. If I was paying for my handset outright, or wasn't relatively well off, or even just still in my 20s (or single) I might be an Android guy right now. But anecdotally amongst my friends and coworkers, quite a few have gone to Android only to come back to iOS recently with the 6/6S. (Or in the case of my boss, managed to sit on the fence and go iPhone 5->Nexus 4->HTC One M7->N5->One M8->iPhone 6 Plus->Galaxy S6->6S Plus in 3 short years.)

I'm sure I'll give Android another go in the future. Life's too short to argue about phone platforms. Use what you like. Re-evaluate occasionally.

And if you must go iOS, keep a cheap Android around for Wifi Analyzer :)

  • I went from Samsung to iPhone. iPhone was gifted. I'm sticking with iPhone for now because my son uses iPad and it's nice to share the same app as we don't always have the iPad with us. I also find apps / games I use to be better implemented on iOS.
I won't be upgrading my iPhone often as like you said, the price is high. But then again, maybe I'll be gifted another iPhone when the time comes.

  • Since technology keeps changing all the time I don't do any research until my current mobile phone becomes obsolete before shopping on OzBargain for the best deal.

2010 HTC Touch Diamond2 (dual boot Windows Mobile 6.5/Android 2.2), free with Telstra $40/month plan:

    2014 Huawei G526 (Android 4.1, 1.2GHz Dual Core), $99 unlocked prepaid:

    2015 Huawei Y550 (Android 4.4, 1.2Ghz Quad Core), $47 unlocked prepaid:
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/188848

The HTC Touch Diamond2 beat the iPhone 3GS. Camera=5MP vs 3MP. Screen=800x480 vs 480x320. Cost of handset cost = free vs +$10/month.
The Huawei G526 is 75% the gaming performance of a Samsung S3.
The Huawei Y550 is identical to iPhone 5 in gaming performance.

I've owned smart phones since before Android and IOS and watched the evolution of smartphones, mobile operating systems, iTunes/Play stores.

When I was time poor and loved to play games I preferred IOS. The reasons:
    1) IOS has more blockbuster games that turn free than Android. (eg. the OzBargain deals from IGN).
    2) 90% of the free Android games are pay-to-win or have In-App-Purchases.
    3) Google Play wastes hours of your time sifting through imitation/duplicate applications. iTunes has almost no imitation games due to their fee structure.

These days I much prefer Android as I am more value conscious plus hate that my owned IOS apps keep increasing their system requirements each time a new IOS version comes out. A $50 Huawei Y550 can offer similar gaming performance to a $400 iPhone5. To put that in perspective that means I can upgrade with 8 different Android smartphones or own 1 iPhone. Or I would have to hang onto my iPhone 8x longer than a budget Android phone.

Flagship smartphones seem overpriced to me. For the same money you can own a Digital SLR camera, Android Tablet, Chromebook, Car GPS Navigator, Action sports camera, Budget Smartphone.

    Eg:
    - $50 for Huawei Y550 smartphone
    - $70 for Car GPS Navigator
    - $298 for Nikon D3300 Digital SLR (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/218965)
    Total = under $500.

Below are the devices that I've owned:
    Nokia 6120c (Symbian) = 4 years, $30/month plan on "3" (Hutchinson).
HTC Touch Diamond2 (dual boot Windows Mobile 6.5/Android 2.3) = 4 years, $40/month plan on Telstra.
    iPod Touch 4th Generation (IOS 4.1) = 3+ years.
    Huawei G526 (Android 4.1) = 2+ years, $95 unlocked prepaid.
Huawei Y550 (Android 4.4) = soon to be my next phone, $50 unlocked prepaid.
