Nikon D3300 Digital SLR with 18-55mm Single VR-II Lens Kit $298 After $100 Cashback @ Officeworks

2140

Well this is embarrassing. Two posts in a row from our old mate theearth. But they're just too good not to post on OzB. So all pride aside, and full credit to the great man. Sale starts Thursday. No idea if it's instore only, or available online in which case delivery should be free.

EDIT: Thanks to the link provided by Firey1989, seems this price is available now with free delivery. Store stock levels should increase Thursday when the catalogue sale officially starts.

Update:

There appears to be issues with their cashback form. They advise the following:

use Other, and the Other and then type in the full name of the store

    cheapest SLR ever ?

    • I paid $50 for a Nikon D3000 with the 18-55mm VR I kit lens a month or two ago at Big W.
There was only the one so couldn't post it on OzBargain.

    • +2

Guys I just went to Good Guys in Chadstone and they price matched it!

      • nice, how many did they have left?

also could I get a receipt by chance?

        Thanks

  • You sure that is $398 BEFORE cashback???

    • +2
      • Thanks for this link! I suppose this means it's available now, rather than Thursday?

        • +1

Looks like it, but they could have just listed it early and Thursday it might be available and suddenly in stock everywhere.

        • @Firey1989: Thanks. I've updated the main link & description :)

        • @tightarse:
          Unavailable online..

Edit that's this morning. Hopefully in two days they will have stock.

        • @tightarse:

Hmm for some reason I get not eligile
Sorry, a reward is not available
Thank you for entering your NIKKOR purchase details. Unfortunately, your purchase is not eligible for a reward or the redemption period on your purchase has now expired. Please contact us if you have any questions regarding your claim: [email protected]

        • @Galahad123: same … if you purchased it through office work it does not work..

        • @Wei: Office Works was on the pull down menu earlier this morning when I submitted my claim.

  • Cheapest ever for the D3300? Got it for ~$390 few months back…

    • And this is almost $100 cheaper than what you paid after the Cashback. If you don't trust Cashback then yeah it's $8 more expensive but I think many people will get it cheap.

      • I wasn't doubting, it was a question. And I got mine with CashRewards + Nikon Cashback. So yes this is give or take $100 cheaper.

        • +1

Sorry misunderstood, the quadruple dots at the end of your message made it sound like you were saying yours was cheaper and this isn't the cheapest ever. Sarcasm hard to judge on the internet sometimes.

  • +3

these cameras get cheaper and cheaper!
Looks like ill be picking one up on the weekend.
I'll have to get something extra to claim the TRS on jan holiday.

    • +2

It's already above $300. You don't really need to buy anything extra to get tax back. The will look into the total price in the rice they don't really care about the cash back so you will get around $38 back

      • +1

        geez completely missed that!

        • Sorry about the typo, was trying to fix them and you just replied before I submit it.

    • I wouldn't count on stock still being available on the weekend.

    • *GST free item… is on the receipt.

  • +9

Is it just me or was the picture taken with a potato?

    • Must've been taken with a Canon ;)

    • it must've been a 0.5 megapixel potato

    • +1

buckscoop is having bandwidth issues. They're trying to host the site off 2 meg a month. As long as the traffic doesn't triple, they're fine.

  • Thats insane TA, thank for posting

  • +1

decent body average lens, would recommend anyone purchasing this to get body only or sell the lens and get a prime lens

    • +6

A prime lens is not going to cut it. This focal range is perfect for a beginner, after a while they will figure out what lenght prime to get based on their preference.

      • +3

fair enough, but in my experience most "beginners and enthusiasts," will want the bokeh effect that comes with a prime, those more experienced will go full frame and invest in much better glass.

        • What would you recommend?

        • +6

          @blackfalcon53:

          1. Buy this kit because its a great deal, sell the lens that comes with the camera on gumtree (could get around 50-90 bucks) depends how lucky you are
          2. buy a 35mm F1.8 Dx or 50mm depending on your preference. (street photography/ portraiture)
            OR
          3. buy a tamron 17-50mm tamron f2.8 (VC or NoN vc ( you probably wont notice the difference)) (gives the option of zoom and with a fast CONSTANT aperture)

if you want nature photography and long zoom lenses i wouldnt be sure in giving advice because i've never been into that type of photography, best someone else shed some light on that!

anything else and you would want to be going fullframe.

        • +1

@Kapinny: I have the 5100 with the 1.8 35mm. Excellent combo, your advice is spot on.

        • +1

          @Kapinny:

Good advise, for sports photography on a budget I'm happy with the D3300 and a Nikon 18-200 VR (Vibration reduction) purchased second hand on eBay.

The D3300 teamed with a Sandisk Extreme Pro SD card can sustain 5fps shooting speed at full resolution which is pretty impressive for a camera at this price.

          http://www.cameramemoryspeed.com/nikon-d3300/fastest-sd-card…

        • You can zoom to 55mm and get real close. Will get nice blurry background. Will work for portraits too, if the subjects head is the size of a small potato.

        • @Kapinny:

          +1 for option 3.

i have the 12-40 2.8 pro on my Olympus which is a similar effective focal range to the tamron on the D3300. Personally wouldn't want to be stuck on a fixed focal length. A 50mm 1.8 is nice to have but not as your only focal lenght just for the sake of a little extra light. I have a 50mm 1.4 but rarely use it, the 12-40 2.8 stays on the camera most of the time and a 40-150 occasionally.

    • +1

Actually I'm getting some superb shots very slightly stopped down with an 18-55VR (version 1) but it's on a D7100 and I've adjusted the AF fine tuning. My preferred lens is the 18-70DX despite lack of VR but this lens does very nicely too. If your style is to shoot with a bit more DoF, you don't necessarily have to upgrade. One guy on DPreview was using a D40 and kit lens 3 or 4 years back when everyone else was using D5100 and D7000 and he was selling fine art prints.

I've always enjoyed Ken Rockwell's reviews. He differs from DP review as he just comments on what he thinks you'll need and how well it works. His quotes for the D3300 that sum it up are:

        http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d3300.htm

"The D3300 is for people who want great pictures. More expensive cameras are for people who want fancier cameras."
        And
"when my normal friends ask what camera to get, it's always this inexpensive D3300. The only reason I often shoot a fancier camera is that I have to go into menus to set the advanced features of the D3300, while my bigger cameras usually have dedicated knobs … most people don't even know what these adjustments do…"

Ken also said its the lightest (462g with battery and sim) and best battery life (700 photos vs usual 500-600). Ken suggests lenses and flashes for all cameras he reviews.

Ken seems to suggest the lens of the US model is perfectly fine,
"The included 18-55mm VR II is probably all you need for everything. If you're new to photography, the strongest advice I can give you from 45 years of experience is that it's far more important to learn how to use what you've got, instead of confusing the issue by buying more lenses, as you're starting out."

This review is a highly recommended read. His web site is filled with practical advice. He's definitely someone worth sending a small donation to as he does a great job and has been around for years :)

        • +4

Ken's advice is a mix of good and awful and as such are dangerous to a new photographer because it takes experience to know whether you're being taught a gem or learning a bad habit. His advice of shooting hyper-saturated JPGs on lower than best quality and resolution for example is ridiculous - you are throwing away a lot of potential for the photo you are taking if you are doing that. And later on you'll realize that natural colours can be as powerful a tool as punchy unrealistic ones. I've also seen Ken review lenses which he admits some way into the review he's never held is his hand. Not only do I disagree that you should donate money to this man. I think you should double and triple check everything you learn on his site makes sense and get other points of view.

I would in now way agree that the 18-55 VRII is probably all you need for everything. There are definitely reasons to buy other lenses. What I don't agree with is that it's a terrible lens. You can definitely get good pictures out of it if you use it within it's limitations provided you don't have a defective copy, especially if you have a body that will let you fine tune (which I'm afraid rules out all the low end bodies like the D3300). However if you need to shoot sports, or your kids running around fast, or low light, or wide angle, or macro the lens will be severely limiting or won't do the job at all. Someone newly getting serious doesn't need to go out and spend money on other lenses unless they have a good understanding of why their kit lens won't do the job.

        • +3

You take any notice of Ken Rockwell? Have you not seen the video of him at the B&H Photo Video Superstore (see Youtube)? I'd never give his opinions any credence whatsoever.
          https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SwBrC3goWwg

        • AF system is the only downer for this camera. Only 1 cross type. OK if you only use the middle focus point, or you are shooting still subjects. Not so good for taking photos of active kids. Going to buy this to replace my aging Nex 3. The 18-55mm VR lens is one of the most fun lenses to have. Can take quite a beating.

        • +2

I've always enjoyed Ken Rockwell's reviews.

I've always enjoyed Ken Rockwell's reviews too; they are always good for a laugh…

          The following are all from one of his recent reviews;

          • "Face recognition works great in all focus modes, but only if you turn it on" - Ken Rockwell

          • "The only real difference between APS-C and full-frame cameras is that full-frame lenses are much bigger and heavier, and that APS-C has more depth of field and full-frame has less." - Ken Rockwell

          • "Most people are hobbyists and won't notice the subtle things I do" - Ken Rockwell

          • When discussing higher ISO settings, Ken says : "Therefore, shooting at lower resolutions like 11MP doesn't lose any resolution (since 42MP doesn't show anything more), and the lower settings save file space."

          • When discussing a $4,000+, 42MP camera Ken bemoans the fact that "11MP is the lowest resolution setting. I usually prefer to shoot at around 6 MP", because that's what people spending that sort of money on an ultra high mega-pixel camera would have purchased it for, right ?!?

I guess I am doing photography wrong, because I dare to shoot at greater than 6MP even for portraits, I sometimes shoot RAW (he ONLY shoots JPEG), I don't always use "P" or "Professional" mode and Auto ISO. And I still don't know which Ken to trust because he will often praise a certain camera, saying it is all you will ever need in his review of the product, and then turn around and call the same camera junk in another post.

I think Ken Rockwell sums things up best on his own website when he says "This website is my way of giving back to our community. It is a work of fiction, entirely the product of my own imagination."

        • +3

          @Cyberacc:

If nothing Ken said made any sense he wouldn't be so dangerous. The trouble is some of what he says makes perfect sense and new photogs get hooked, taking onboard his other really REALLY bad advice. Enough to ruin a photographer, or delay their learning and development by quite a bit.

        • @zealmax:

Tell me about it! A friend of mine brought me a "dead" 18-55VR to take a look at. He had dropped it such that there was a massive dent on the inner rim at the front of the lens - not the outside, the plastic with "Nikon" label and lens specs on it. He's lucky the glass didn't break. Anyway it wasn't focusing - motor was jammed. I took it off the camera, wiggled and giggled the thing and it came back from the dead. Wish I was able to do that with my 70-300VR when it's motor died…difference is it wasn't jammed, it was dead.

  • Crazy price!

  • Thanks TA - will look into it!

  • Cheers TA

I wonder whether splitting the $398 in 4 transactions using paywave by my mebank card for the 5% cashback would get me into trouble.

    • mebank no, ING maybe

  • which catalogue is this? can't even find the product page on the website.. didn't even know they stocked SLRs are OW :S

    • yeah can't find it online.. will have to check on Thursday or head down in store.

  • Looking for a deal on a D7200, anyone aware of a deal <$1k?

    • +2

Closest would be $1,068.85 from what I've seen; its hard to check at the moment since some stores quote with cashback and some don't.

      http://www.ryda.com.au/nikon-d7200-dslr-camera-body-only

These guys also stock older refurb models which are pretty good value sometimes (I got a refurb D7k for $600 at the beginning of the year).

  • Awesome price for a very good entry level camera! I have the same one, better to upgrade the lens though

Price match at Harvey Norman for a possible extra $30 or $50 saving through Amex rebate

    • Could be a great option if they honour a price match.

    • How does amex cash back work? is it available in WA?

  • Is it just me or can't find this product online

    • +1

      It's here

However, product is unavailable to purchase online and when checking availability in stores it says "Limited - please call"

  • Tempting!

  • Unavailable to purchase online and all stores I have checked say "Limited - please call"

Good luck if you can find one

    • +1

Just called my local in Highett, Vic and they have none on stock. Apparently it's flagged as a clearance item which means not much stock in any stores - will try a few others.

      • thanks for the info, Highett is the closest one to me as well…

  • Was able to pay for it online delivery to Brisbane.

    • Nice work! Thanks for confirming :)

      • +1

It seems to exclude VIC if you have a VIC store set as your store. Change it to another store in another state and you can buy online. Just enter a VIC address if that is where you live.

        • Tried that with Hobart store and it still shows as unavailable for online purchase.

So I am off to Hobart…..who can find me an OzB on a flight from Melbourne, or maybe on the Spirit of Tasmania.

Its worth the spend to have the kudos of saying I have snared a deal.

        • @jollster101: Put in postcode 2000, 4000 or 6000 and then add to cart. Then put in your delivery address. Must be unavailable online in VIC and TAS then.

        • @Firey1989: Thanks, I tried multiple locations and they say they had stock, get all the way to purchasing and then get hit with an item unavailable.

This time it looks like its just not meant to be.

        • @Firey1989: hmm.. Tried that. Shopping cart gets to final stage but then "removes" from my cart due to no stock available..

        • +1

          @om78:

Bugger! Can't say we didn't try hey. I never got to the final payment stage as I have a DSLR already so was just trying for the fellow OzB's. I stopped once I got to the address part.

      • I get
        Home >
        Claim Reward >
        Ineligible

Sorry, a reward is not available

Thank you for entering your NIKKOR purchase details. Unfortunately, your purchase is not eligible for a reward or the redemption period on your purchase has now expired. Please contact us if you have any questions regarding your claim: [email protected]

    • Confirming the same. Successfully ordered on mobile 10min ago. Same day delivery to Brisbane CBD.
      Thanks TA!

  • Bought one online, free shipping same-day delivery. Bought as a toy. Love my Sony A7ii.

    Thanks TA.

  • Thanks! I've been in the market for a camera! Just in time for my Christmas Japan trip!

    • If you can find one anywhere…….

      • Sale officially starts Thursday. I'm guessing there will be plenty of stock then?

        • Still have plenty stock online now.

        • Hmmm ok, well lets hope so. Reading through some of the other posts I thought I saw someone say it was a runout model and so maybe not available in many places but was available now.

Cheep Cheap and jva seem to have been able to buy one looking at their posts so confusion reigns.

        • @jva: Well if you can buy one then let me know and I will buy it off you. All the efforts, stores and permeations I have tried so far have all been unsuccessful.

        • @jollster101: Try a *permutation, let us know how that goes..

        • @jollster101: Me too, reserved one by phone call was told need to pickup within 24 hours, went there after work got told by the manager the reservation was incorrect, or if I am happy to take the manager special price of $800.

  • By changing the store locations on the OW website, I get the following:
Not available Keswick, Gilles Plains, Elizabeth - SA.
Available Braddon, Fyshwick, Belconnen - ACT

    • Buy that online, get same day delivery.

  • Great deal for a ridiculously sh_t hot sensor.

  • How can I get the $100 cash back? On the Nikon site it says $50 cash back for this model

Anyone any experience with this camera?

    • I put the D3300 into the cashback link with a purchase date & store and got this…

      • When I purchased mine last year the Nikon cashback was quick and hassle free, much better than some others I've encountered.

  • Thanks OP. Bought it online. Now how can I do cash back? It is asking for store?

    • Yeah it confuses me as well.. I'm gonna pick up from Greenacre officework but it's not on the list

    • Just called them. Told to put other in both store and location and manually input the info on next step

      • +1

Thanks. You can not do it till I have the camera in my hand. It requires serial number.

  • "Sorry, some of the items in your shopping cart are out of stock. Please remove highlighted items and proceed."

    Wtf?

I can keep going through until I checkout this pops up

    • same for me..

    • Sale starts Thursday.

      • Hmm how come some people have been able to buy it in this thread, odd. :(

        • Assuming they have I suppose.

        • Ye, no idea. I know the link only went live this morning, which is when I added it to the post. Maybe OW didn't expect anyone to find it before Thursday and they've stopped it working before then? Who knows :)
