Got one last time for 0.02.

    Nice lightweight pen.

For anyone else getting these make sure you get ink cartridges for an extra $1.70 unless you have bottled ink available:

    http://m.banggood.com/5PCS-Black-Fountain-Pen-Ink-Cartridge-…

    • +3

Yep. It's good to stress that this deal includes NO INK.

    • +10

I too got one of those last time. I was wondering why doesn't it write… :)

    • +2

Any idea if I could drill a hp etc printer cartridge, and syringe ink out. I'm that cheap, really. Plenty of unusable printer cartridge.
      Would it work in pen?

    • +15

OH MAN I GOT IT FOR $0.02 TOO, NOW IT'S HALF PRICE FML

    • Sold out

    • +1

Damn, sold out. The ink has been ozbargained!

  • +1

It says one per cellular if you previously purchased a .01 cent item from before. Does anyone know how to get around this? I only have a moto g and an ipod touch 4g that won't update to the latest iOS to install the banggood app :(

  • Received the last order a few days ago and bought ink this morning from officeworks. Tempted to buy another however limited to 1 pen per celluar. Maybe I could try to use another phone or another account is fine?

    • Which ink did you buy out of curiosity? I have mine inked with Waterman Serenity Blue :)

      • My local OW only has Parker Quink 57ml at $10.21. I bought blackblue and it flows ok so far.

        • +1

Weighing in here, highly recommend the Mont Blanc inks
          Waterman are great value
I've had hit and miss with the parkers
Sailor is the smoothest writing, but the blue does leave residue if you don't clean regularly

        • @engineeringprof:

Sheaffer Skrip is OK too but Waterman is indeed the best value. I wish more supplies were readily available here. Sailor pens and inks are way out of range for me. I am currently just collecting and using some Chinese pens from Jinhao, Hero and Baoer. I will get the Pilot Metro one day when there is a good enough deal.

For pens I have found this NZ bloke to be the most reasonable:

          http://www.penclassicsnz.com/

        • @fryandlaurie:

Cheers for the link, how do you find those chinese pens? Seem like great value!

        • @engineeringprof: Have a read through these forum posts:

They can be had on ebay.com.au, ebay.com, aliexpress and banggood (but the pens are dearer for some reason).

For ebay, just type in Jinhao, Hero or Baoer and sort by cheapest :)

I would recommend a Jinhao X450 or X750 for a really nice starting pen. I got my X450 for $2 delivered on ebay a few weeks ago. They are quite substantial and have large feeds and nibs. They feel good too and are mostly smooth and wet. Good for everyday carry that you won't mind losing or breaking.

        • +1

          @fryandlaurie: Cheers!

          @fryandlaurie:
Just gonna say this post goes against the spirit of oz-bargain and should be disregarded if you're really not after anything really nice.

But if you really want some nice inks outside of the great ones you've already mentioned (waterman):

J Herbin (the 1670 especially, the gold flakes will clog your pen up like no tomorrow but god are they pretty)
Noodlers inks, very vibrant. Try the X-feather if you want a nice black (waterproof and you can use your pen only any quality level of paper without it feathering)
Very hard to come by domestically though.

As for Japanese inks (which you can buy here), you can try out the pilot iroshizuku range (very pretty, with a lot of depth to the colours) as well as has been mentioned, the sailor inks (my favourite being the kobe inks). Used to be able to buy these at kinokuniya.

And for bargain fountains. The Jinhaos are great for their price (possibly on par with one of my poorer montblancs to be brutally honest). However, if you're thinking 50 or so dollars I'd say you're onto the right pen, the Pilot metro/prera has one of the smoothest nibs I've ever used, often find myself reaching for it rather than some of my more expensive pens (not because it's cheap but because it's just so damn good). For a bit of a 'bargain' you can try the classifieds on fountain pen network.

Edit: fountain pens are habit forming, today you'll try out a 5 dollar chinese pen, tomorrow it's a pilot, before you know it you'll be trying to buy a thousand+ dollar visconti 'on-sale' for 800 or something.

        • +1

@Dsquall: Thank you for the great advice. I really do want to try out the J Herbin and the various Japanese and American inks but sadly I am pretty broke at the moment.

Currently, I am waiting for a good deal on the Pilot Metro. I nearly bought the 78G but realised it is really light and would not suit me especially after I am used the much heavier X750/X450.

I actually have a Platinum Riviera PTR 200 from Daiso ($2.80) and it is such a smooth nib. But as you said, Chinese pens are just so good for an entry point. So far I have only spent a couple of dollars each on the ones I own (Jinhao, Baoer and Hero) and it has allowed me to recognise what type of pen shape and nib I prefer.

But yeah, ideally I will get a Pilot Metropolitan when I have enough disposable cash and then ink it up with the Iroshizuku. I will definitely check out the FPN classifields. There is also /r/penswap on reddit if you are interested. Hardly anyone ships outside of CONUS though :-(

Grail pen will always be a Sailor with the Sailor ink. I have seen pictures of the nib and it is breathtaking.

I am also practising my handwriting and writing and journalling whenever I can.

It is indeed very habit forming. Thankfully I am satisfied right now by playing around with Chinese pens but I always have Ebay auctions on the lookout to snag a decent enough deal :-)

I wonder if anyone would be up for Ozbargain Pen Pals where everyone handwrites to each other.

        • +1

          @fryandlaurie:

From what I can remember the Pilot 78G has a standard #6 nib, you should be able to take out the nib and feed and put it in one of your jinghaos which should also be a standard #6 (that is if you prefer the pilot nib).

The platinum range are good and also offer a decent entry price for gold nibs (start at around 60 dollars on ebay I think, pretty good for a gold nib) if you're into that thing. However, I'm of the opinion gold nibs are a tad over-rated unless you really go top of the line (go hard or go home as they say).

And I am a fan of handwriting as well (the one skill that I learnt in highschool that has stuck with me) but I'm not sure as to how many of us there are on ozbargain.

I too am a kind of re- born FP freak. As an old fart I was schooled in the days where FP use was compulsory. I was rubbish then & just made splodges all over the paper. Still am rubbish, but I have a new found enthusiasm for the fountain pen. Recently bought the Pilot 78G ($19 delivered on eBay) & find the Medium nib a bit fine for my liking. I liked this Hero pen however & am keen to get into it a bit more.
Not sure of next acquisition but Chinese might be the way to go.
Might even get me into having a pen pal again!

  • +1

    Stil waiting on mine!!!

    • +1

Good to hear that someone else hasn't got theirs yet. I was already worried I wasted $0.01

    • I got my ink cartridges last week, but still no pen

      • If the pen never arrives you can try drawing with the ink :-)

    • +1

I got my pen last week.
Haven't used a fountain pen in a while but it seems to write well.
Local officeworks only had Parker Quink, seems to write well enough with this and the ink dries really quickly which is nice.
I don't really use a pen much as I tend to use a computer for most things.
Pretty sure I'll lose the pen before I use the first bottle of ink.

      • Put it up on the classifieds if it comes to that. Turns out there are quite a few fountain pen users here that wouldn't mind purchasing it :)

        • Oh, I like the pen well enough, and I do need to have a pen. But in practice I write maybe 20 words a day with a pen, so it'll take years for me to go through a bottle of ink.

  • Like the others said, if you've ever used the App to get a 1-2 cent item, you can't get any more. Got the electric trimmer on their very first deal :(

  • +1

Still too scared to use the nose trimmer from the past deal!

    • +8

Yeah. My Mum visited and thought my wife had left something out that she shouldn't have

  • Enjoying using my Hero from the previous deal.
Loaded it up with ink and am quite impressed with the quality.
OK, it's not a top shelf fountain pen, but as a handy scribbler to have lying around on the desk, it's great.

If anyone is in the hunt for more serious fountain pens, Peter's of Kensington sells Waterman's dirt cheap compared with anywhere else:

You can purchase another $0.01 item if you check out as guest using PayPal. The limit is based on your PayPal account already having purchased a $0.01 item from them.

    • What about checking out as guest using the same PayPal account?

  • Ordered and we shall see

  • +1

All y'all who like fountain pens may also enjoy the "Pilot V Pen" - a disposable version that's available in Black, Blue and Red in Australia, and a bajillion other colours online. They're good, I use them a lot.

    • +1

Similarly there is the Platinum Preppy which is refillable without too much trouble.

  • +1

It was fountain pen day on Friday too guys! I just bought a very sexy Parker Vacumatic today - won't grab this as I've already used my 0.01c purchase.

  • Question about the ink (mine arrived last week). You can either get cartridges or get a bottle of ink right? What's a cheap local source of ink? A few peepz mentioned Waterman ink and I found these bottles: http://www.pencity.com.au/shop/category/waterman-refills
    Any other advice? Thanks

    • Waterman or Parker Quink from OW is fine for a 1 cent pen. Although you may have to spend $10 on a bottle (of ~60ml), which is 1000 x the price of the pen.
If you had a $200/300 pen, then that wouldn't really matter.
As someone said above, you could just get a few cheap cartridges from BG when you check out, or score some from eBay.

      • Thanks mate

    • Consider checking out your local penshop and asking for their "inkbook"
Will allow you to see a full range of colours (then buy online to save money). if you're using bottle ink you'll require a converter.
TBH buying ink is by the jar is totally worth it, I use less than 1 jar a year I reckon … $10-15 over an entire year for pens is pretty reasonable.

      • Hmm IC, what do you mean by converter? I thought you just suck up the ink with what came in the pen?

        • Yep it's like a syringe, not sure if this pen comes with one. I actually have gone down the Ozbargain route before of buying one set of cartridge inks then refilling them when needed using a fine syringe. Cheap converter.

        • @engineeringprof: Oh yep it comes with a syringe like thing inside, thanks for your advice

  • Hero was once a very good brand in China. Manufactured in Shanghai. Wiki link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shanghai_Hero_Pen_Company

    • Are they not a good brand anymore?

  • Worth to try this fountain pen out. If I don't like it, I will ask for a refund :).

    1. Nib Material: Iridium

    Erm, yeah, right.

    • if there is no iridium i want a refund!

    • I believe only the tip is coated in Iridium.

    • Iridium. Current spot rate US520 per (Troy) ounce.
      That's about AU$24 per gramme.
So, even if the tip of the nib was coated with 1/100th of a gramme, that would still be $0.24 per pen, so BG would be losing cash big time.
Pen nibs don't use Iridium these days, none of them.
      It's too expensive.
"Iridium" is used as a fanciful description rather than in a factual sense.

  • I got one from the previous deal. How do I get ink into the pen??

  • I would recommend buying noodlers ink. It is waterproof and by far the best ink I have used.

    • +1

Just don't fill Noodlers into anything cost more than this one.

      • I may have read your comment wrong, but wait what? Noodlers is the shiz dude, 4000x better than quink or waterman

        • +4

          stfu

        • +1

          You're an abomination.

    • Sailor Kiwa Guro nano carbon pigment ink. Permanent like the Noodlers, smooth as coz of the carbon. Does.Not.Feather.Or.Bleed.

  • +3

Ah…the Hero fountain pen, brings back fond memories of high school, and one of the VERY few Chinese branded products I have high praises for.

  • Thanks

  • Got mine today, only to realise I was one of the suckers without ink

    • same here dude

  • Hmm… Can anyone confirm this video is correct?

    https://youtu.be/kVnpbl4_vO0

Also, my little cartridge thing has a little spring in it, anyone know what it is for?

    Thank-you

    • The spring is inside the converter to prevent ink from clotting up. Sometimes they use small beads as well.

That video is perfectly fine though.

A cartridge is pre-filled and is one time use only that simply inserts into the pen whereas the converter is used to draw up ink from a bottle.

This video is also good and easier to understand:

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dNSOyoGlfug

      • I spent $10 on a pack of Parker cartridges, they don't fit :(

        • +1

Oh bummer, I posted a link above on what cartridges to buy for this pen. They use international cartridges whereas the Parker cartridges are specifically made for their line of pens.

See if you can return them in any way. You can get a whole bottle of ink from Officeworks for about $10:

          http://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/SearchDisplay?searchTerm=…

  • And finally, to what extent do people trust a 2¢ pen not to leak ink everywhere?

    • Hero is the oldest brand of fountain pen manufacturers in China so they can be mostly reliable. However, they do cut corners, and I believe the pen itself was only sold for 2c as a promo from Banggood and does not reflect the true price of the pen. It is now at least $4 on banggood and ebay.

I suppose you can carry it around with only a little bit of ink at first to see how it goes. I have been carrying around various Chinese pens and have never had any leaking incidents. Though, I usually put it in a pouch, case or at the very least a separate compartment.

  • Got my pen and ink cartridge pack. Ordered the standard 5 pack cartridge pack, they sent me a 6 pack of jinhao ink.

Can't believe how well it writes. So much better than any ball point I have used.

    Thanks OP

    • Got my pen and the jinhao ink but they don't seem to fit? Did you have to really force your ink to make it work?

      • Yeah push the cartridge in, you need to give it some force so the cartridge end cracks otherwise the ink can't flow.

  • Mine arrived today.
I'm going to give it a rinse and then try some Waterman ink.
