i5-6600 or i5-6600k, The OzBargain Way

Hi guys,

Seems there is some confusion as to the actual question.
Please let me clarify with this edit.

I have:
- 1 x GA-H170-D3H motherboard (does not allow overclocking)
- 2 x Crucial 8Gb DDR4 RAM
- 1 x $100 ebay voucher from the last Click n Collect promotion.

I am in need of:
- 1 x CPU for the above.

I am considering:
- i5-6600 (3.4Ghz) from an eBay Click n Collect participating store for ~$354 ($254 out of pocket) during 20-30 Nov to get another $100 ebay voucher (assuming they hold the promotion again).
- i5-6600k (3.6Ghz) from Kogan for ~$330 ($230 out of pocket). Kogan do not seem to participate in the Click n Collect promotion, so I would not be getting an ebay voucher.

Purchase price of heat sink is not a factor, as I will be getting an aftermarket cooler irrespective of the above choice.
Overclocking is not a factor - I will not overclock regardless, as the board doesn't allow it.
I actually went for H and not Z to resist the temptation of OC'ing.
If it was like Ivybridge where the 3570 and 3570k had the same specs, but one was unlocked, I would not hesitate to buy the non-k.
But the base specs are slightly different (200Mhz).

So the vote is basically for:
1. Kogan - ~$30 cheaper than retail + use my $100 ebay voucher.
2. Other - ~$30 more than retail + use my $100 ebay voucher + get another $100 ebay voucher.

What would you do as a proper OzBargainer?
What is the better bargain?

I have recently bought, with the help of OzBargain, the following:
ebay click and collect:
1 x Crucial 8Gb DDR4.
1 x other item to the value of $150.

shopping express trifecta:
1 x Crucial 8Gb DDR4.
1 x Gigabyte GA-H170-D3H

So now I'm needing a CPU to go with this motherboard.
As an OzBargainer, what would you go for:

Option 1: i5-6600k from Kogan eBay store (do not participate in the Woolies Click n Collect, it seems).
Kogan sell this for very cheap ~$330 vs $380+ at other ebay stores.

Option 2: i5-6600 from eBay Click n Collect participating store during 20-30 Nov, so I can get another $100 voucher (assuming the promotion happens again). This goes for ~$350 at Click n Collect participating ebay stores.

I have narrowed down to eBay stores in order to use my $100 voucher.

  • 6600k needs a heatsink and I rather go local instead of Kogan HK just in case for warranty. Upvoted for 6600.

  • Go for tye one that is cheaper provided that you do not plan on overclocking. The differnece between the k chip and the non k chip is that the k chip allows for overclock which if you have no plan on doing would be a waste. However based on what you said, the k chip seems to be the cheaper of the two disregarding the $100 voucher, so if you have ause for the voucher the better option would he the k chip.

    -Edit-

Disregard that, the 6600 requires a separate heatsink which would cost you from $30 depending on the heat sink

Gigabyte GA-H170-D3H doesn't support cpu overclocking.

Save your money and get the non-K version.

  • hi guys, thanks for the reply but it seems there is some misunderstanding with the question. I have edited to try to clarify the actual question.

    • Based on the comparison here

They're effectively the same chip but with minor features that may not be applicable to normal users. As you are planning on getting a cooler regardless… go for the cheaper of the two chips. In this case it should be the 6600k chip as you are out of pocket less by about $20 assuming the price you listed includes delivery.

  • Why are you resisting the OC? Have you had a bad experience?

The i5-6600k can hit 4.4-4.5Ghz easily. I have overclocked three so far.

    • Summer temperatures are too hot in my study and my air conditioner broke down last summer… but still undecided whether I will move or stay in this place. Won't be fixing the A.C. unless I decide I'm not moving to a new place.
I need a good cooler and no OC to make sure the PC survives the next 2 or so hot dry Melbourne summers while I watch the residential market.
But if I know I can OC, I will OC. Too hard to resist if I have the goods. So the best way is to force the issue by getting a H170 chipset.
You should know that, given your OCs.
I might have also blown my old Phenom II x2 (3.2Ghz 555BE x2, unlocked and OC'd to 3.8Ghz B55 x4) system running OC'd with core unlocks last summer when the AC died… R.I.P. it ran fine for ~6 years before it died.

      • If you have a decent cooler then you will be fine.

If you are able to handle the room then the CPU can.

        • I can't handle the room on those days. I just leave the computer on to remote access files off it while running my laptop in the lounge room where the AC still works. No way I'm going in the study on a 40+ day. It's probably 50 in there.
