No votes from me either way - yet! This might be a good find and good posting! However, my general prejudice against all ink-jets is because of the cost of the ink! Thus I question whether they are ever really bargains! There seems to be a clear strategy by some manufacturers to sell the printer at below cost so they can rip-off the consumers with the price of the consumables (i.e. ink cartridges, photo-paper, et al).

My experience with unbranded refills has been that often there is diminished quality in the output. This can depend whether the refill is just an ink-tank or whether it has the print-head incorporated into it as well. Print-heads also have limited number of times they can be used via refills before they become fairly clogged.

Also when choosing an ink-jet watch out for those where you have to buy a new multi-coloured cartridge when any one of the three or four colours runs out. Better those that have individual colour tanks. (Wait this printer appears to be that sort - maybe I should give this a negative vote!!?)

In general terms for home/family use I'd always suggest buying a mono laser - based on the cost per page for printing. If you want cheap printing couldn't you really get by without colour? It seems to me pretty often that I visit people with ink-jets where they are out of ink or one or more colours has run out! If one or two pages on the school project need colour you may do better going to OW or a copy-place if there's one handy. Also printing photos at home seems much more expensive with often lesser quality results than what you'd get a you local cheap photo place.

(NB If comparing per-page costs of different lasers, don't forget to check whether there are separate consumable costs for the toner cartridges AND for the drum!)

Sorry OP - decided to vote "neg"! What swayed me in the end was the $34 "tricolour ink-cartridges" which as I understand it means you have to throw away the whole colour cartridge when you run out of "red" - even though the "blue" and "yellow" are still each half-full.

This brought to mind that "Just because something is cheap, doesn't mean that it's a bargain!". What do others think of this line of reasoning?

      • I used to think the same way, but there supposedly isn't much difference, since printers like epson and cannon which do have separate color carts they claim they are empty when you can clearly see at least 30% of the ink in there.

      • I totally agree. The ink are expensive in long run

  • i assume this printer doesn't come with ink?

Its not the OPs fault that printer makers rip us off with cheap printers and expensive inks. Thats business, if its $37 for the printer and $34 for inks, buy 4 printers and toss one out after it runs out then you can keep your cheapness factor :)

It's quite appalling that the printer industry operates this way. Perfectly fine printers end up in landfills simply because the inks are too expensive compared to a whole new printer :(

These are perfect for those who don't print very often (or rarely in colour and have a b/w laser as well).

If you do print large volumes of colour documents, I highly recommend looking at the intro model colour lasers, or atleast a decent inkjet with large ink cartridges if you need photo quality prints. Check out the continuous inking systems out there. They're pretty awesome :)

  • Good post…++++
What makes a bargain??? Something that is much cheaper than anywhere else… and this is.
Just about all products have faults and inkjet printers are sure on that list but the price of this one deserves a post.

  • I think the criteria for ozbargain is that it's cheaper than normal. Normal may be a ripoff, and I agree that inkjets are scandalously expensive to run, but all you can do is present the facts and let people decide for themselves.

Personally even if I found this nearby I wouldn't buy it, because it will cost heaps to run and increase junk in landfill. You can get a good mono laser for around $100. But I won't vote either way on this deal, it's up to the people who want such printers to decide if the price is better than normal.

  • Office works in chadstone has heaps of stock.. about 15 or more on the self?

not sure if the ink comes with it or not… anyone confirm this???

  • Yes it does come with ink cartridges included, just starter cartridges, HP 60 colour and black.
It says on the box this gets you about 80 pages from the colour, and 80 from the black. The normal HP 60 cartridges give you approx 150 pages from the colour, and 200 from the black.
You also get a usb cable included, which a lot of cheaper printers don't usually come with.

I bought one yesterday (thur) from OW Milton in Brisbane.

I saw the display model, with the $37 price tag (was the regular OW price tag, not the hand written one like in the attached image). I couldn't see the boxed stock anywhere near it, so i asked a salesman. He went away for a minute to check for stock, and then came back telling me that they had no stock, and that the item had been put on display in error, and that they were not legally allowed to sell the printer yet due to contract with HP.
Then another salesman was next to him, listening, and overheard the guy tell me they had no stock. So he chimed in saying "yes we do, there's heaps over there".
The original salesman said no, and tried to fob the other salesman off, and tried to shut him up.

So then i said shortly after, "so you've got them but you're not allowed to sell them yet". And he said "yea", and admitted that they do have stock.
I asked him when were they able to sell them, and he told me around Feb 15, or said "the 15th i think.

I asked him was i able to buy the display, and he said no. So i left it at that, a bit dissapointed, and saw him take the printer off display, along with the price tag. Then on my way out i thought i'd look in the vacinity of where the 2nd salesman had pointed to where there was stock.
I found them, about 4-6 units, quickly grabbed one and tried to hide it on the other side of my body. Waited in the checkout line for a nervous couple of minutes, trying to hold the printer so it was hidden by the shelves.
It was nearly my turn, when the lady in front had to have a salesman from Techworks come to the checkout, and i thought "oh no" what if it's the same guy who served me. Luckily, the checkout guy served me in the interim, and the printer scanned at $37. :)
I walked out with booty in hand, like i had just done a bank job. :P
I was thinking of going back in for another one, but i wanted to check for ink cartridges first. And i was thinking whether it was worth getting another one for the ink cartridges, or one for a family member, or one for a fellow OZbargain'er. But i hesistated for a couple of minutes, and when i went back in, the stock had been taken off the shelf.
But i was happy enough to get my one. :)

So for those still interested, there is a chance that you will see this printer again in the middle of the month, for $37. But there is also a possibility that the salesman was feeding me lies, and the D5560 will be back on the shelf now at a much higher price.
