160

I know that ex-display is not everyone's first choice but at this price i think it is a steal. The body is sold with full warranty and obviously Australian stock. No real possibility to find a price to compare it to but it sells used on eBay and Gumtree for more than that, without warranty!

Cashback via redemption

JB itself sells it for $1843.-

  • are you sure cashback apply to this?

  • +1

    Dont see why not.
Come with a tax invoice, and serial number.

  • Is the cashback means cash or just added value for coupons that can only be used to buy nikon stuffs?

    • +2

sometimes i dont wanna respond to ozbargainers that are not bothered to click the link and read, as well not active in contributing, but will be nice anyway. it says cash back.

      • I did click the link and it still says cashback.English is not my first language so I was never too sure.

        • Okay. My bad and my apology.

  • +4

Very tempting to sell my D7000 and accessories and move onto full frame..

Heading off overseas so another 10% off with TRS really makes this tempting..

    • +1

do it .. if u can..

      • +1

do it even if you cant. if you already have a collection of G lenses, it will be an investment that you wont regret… if you don't already have a collection of G lenses. be prepare to park at least $5k aside to top up your lenses in the next 6 months.

        • This is what worries me..

I have 3 x dx lenses (35mm/ 50mm/18-200mm) and only one fx lens (24-85mm) so its going to be a pretty big chunk of cash..

In saying that.. I think I am ready for the upgrade to full frame and this seems like a pretty good deal @ $880! (TRS + $300 cash back)

Should be able to sell the D7000 (shutter count @ 30k) for around $450 so the Chief Financial Officer (a.k.a wife) should be ok with it as long as she doesn't know about the future investments with the camera grip + lenses :)

        • +1

@ev3nfl0w: I don't think the 50mm comes in a DX version (if it's from nikon) so you can probably keep that one.

        • +1

          @ev3nfl0w:

          First 24-70 2.8, then a flash, then 70-200 2.8, then 50mm 1.4. These are the min. A flashgun too.

Not sure about a grip. I took it off and rarely use it. Too heavy.

        • @googleyahoo69:

You'll need to factor in a gym membership with that lineup too. You've got about 12kg of hardware there. And you're complaining about the weight of the grip? Absolute overkill unless you're a pro or trying to launder money.

What's the difference between a flash and a flashgun?

    • +1

That's the move I made. Had a D7000, then jumped to the D610 over a year ago. Hopefully some of your lenses are FX ones like I had, otherwise you can sell the DX ones and upgrade. You can still use the DX, but it will crop the sensor so you'll get less MPs in your images. Fantastic price.

  • Any trouble to buy display camera ? any experience before? thanks

    • -1

I doubt that they let everyone touch such a pricey camera. Would be next to new I assume

      • thanks

    • +2

My local JB has this model on a stand and you can freely throw it around, not behind any glass etc. This model i have been chasing for MONTHS! .. but that is the reason why I won't go ex demo.

      • +1

It's not even funny. My local JB has half the eyepiece rubbers missing. You might as well buy one that's been used as a football.

        • thanks all

  • To buy or not to buy… i have dumped my canon gear over a year ago because i no longer "have time" to shoot… but this is a good deal for a FF body… however.. knowing that i buy it, the upcoming G collection will cost app 10x the body… not sure if i will be "saving" money by buying this goodie…

as an ex-canon fanboy… takes alot to leave the memories behind…

    m… what to do…

  • +3

So how many finger prints and dusts found on the sensor?

  • +2

I couldn't go ex-demo on a camera - I'm too pedantic about my gear. If you could inspect it first instore then maybe. If you can return it for any reason then also maybe. Good luck if you go for it. Cheers

  • it sells used on eBay and Gumtree for more than that

And it'll probably be in much better condition if you buy used from a photographer on ebay/gumtree. An ex-demo camera from JB Hifi has pretty much been used and abused to death by many people.

    • I wouldnt buy from a professional photographer.

      • Yes heavy use if used by a pro. Low shutter count from an amateur that has let it sit unused because he didn't get into it as much as he thought he would or one that changes gear like they change hairstyle is a much better idea.

  • Wanted to buy a D810, but had to lower my expectations because of the exhorb. price tag.
Hoping for a deal on D750, and now this D610 crops up!
Would anyone have a vague idea on how much the shutter count might be for an ex-display stock?

    • +2

I'd expect the shutter count on a demo to be very low. I've never seen a demo camera with an SD card in it, so it's not like there's any motive to reel off 100s of shutter releases to see nothing on the screen. Most of the JB stores I've been to keep their cameras in glass cabinets, so you have to seek assistance to handle them. Here's a pic of a typical store. They seldom even have lenses on the higher end DSLRs, so even less motivation to fire off the shutter.

The one exception that I know of is the store in Pitt St Mall in Sydney that's in the Westfield building. They have them out on display but they're all latched with security cable, so you can't lift it more than half a metre.

I don't understand why people think they'll get seriously abused? Unless they're dropped, I can't see what you can do to a camera while standing in a carpeted store with an assistant next to you or a security cable latched to the camera? Maybe if you started thumping it up against the wall? I would expect that the worst kind of damage you might encounter is scratches on the LCD.

      • Even my experience has been that lenses are usually not attached to the cameras and thus you have to call store staff to help. But that is where i feel the problem is … People having a look at the camera .. Sensor and innards while someone fetches the lens for them to take a sample shot! I would be much more wary about dust specks on the sensor than shutter count !

  • -1

Can it return to JB Hifi if found serious problem? thanks

  • +1

Couldn't resist JB Hifi's offer on the "Olympus Stylus XZ-10 12MP Digital Camera (White) (Ex-Display^)". Wanted a small camera with fast lens. I have received it today and it was brand new and still sealed, to top it all off there was also a free Toshiba flashair card included with it.

Not saying that all "Ex demo" stock is brand new but the two items i have purchased definitely have been.

    • Thanks, just also give it a go on the D610, hope same case as you.

  • Thanks OP! Bit the bullet. A bit of an impulse buy for me but I've been unhappy with my current camera and looking to upgrade to a full frame. Originally planned to get a second hand Nikon or Canon and this deal made it an easier decision.

    • Please report how you like it and whats the condition like.

  • I bought one yesterday too and got a notification it was shipped this morning. i think this will compliment the Samsung NX1 very well.

  • +1

Camera hasn't arrived yet but the Nikon AF-S 24-85mm 3.5-4.5G ED VR Lens I ordered for the camera (also Ex-Display model from JB) for $399 has arrived. Very happy with the condition of the lens. Looks completely untouched and the lens hood is still in its bag unopened. The box it came in was slightly beaten up on two corners and there is a sticker on the box that says "Display". Manual and warranty card all included. Considering the cheapest I have seen the lens is ~$550 delivered for a grey market lens, I'm happy with the $150 savings and the local Nikon warranty. Now just have to wait for the camera to arrive! Interestingly, I ordered the lens one day after I ordered the camera and the lens still arrives earlier.

    • I was thinking about buying the lens too. I own a 28-105 off an old film camera, so I think I'll try that first before I commit to buying this lens. Agree that it's a cracking price, considering you get an Australian warranty with it. Can't go wrong.

  • My camera arrived. Box was beaten up a little. Finger prints on the view finder. Small dust particle on the inside wall of the camera (behind the lens cap). Charging up batteries. Need a lens and will find out what the shutter count is.

    • My shutter count was at 2196

      • Wow! That surprises me! I need to eat my words from an earlier post. That's much more than I would have expected. It's still not a big number - just more than I expected. For the money, I doubt you'd find a camera as new as that, particularly given the full manufacturer's warranty. And good work spotting a small dust particle on the inside wall. I doubt my eyes are that good.

Mine is due to arrive some time this week, I believe. I'll report back when it arrives.

  • Still waiting for the arrival of my camera and expecting it to be tomorrow. Will post the shutter count once I work out how to even find this information out :) While 2196 seems pretty high for a display camera (I would have thought <1000), I'd still be pretty happy with that given the price. Maybe the JB staff take the display cameras home for personal use?

  • Thanks dosada for letting me know how to work out the shutter count. Got lucky I guess as my shutter count says 2 so I guess there was only 1 photo taken before it. The camera definitely shows a couple signs that it has been handled as a display camera though as the LCD screen protector had smudges over it (no marks at all on the LCD screen itself) and there was also a display sticker on the bottom of the camera. All cables and neck strap were in sealed bags unopened. Box was in very good nick though a few pages of the manual were dog eared from not being placed in the box properly. Wouldn't surprise me if the battery was removed which prevented the camera from operating. Extremely pleased!

  • +1

I received my camera today. Box was in perfect condition. Camera looks similarly in perfect condition. Still had the plastic on the screen protector. I snapped a JPEG and uploaded to www.nikonshuttercount.com and got the grand total of 1. So it's 100% brand new. Luck of the draw, I guess. Needless to say, I couldn't be happier!

    • Grats man. I'm still happy with my shutter count.

Was doing some tests against the nx1 and the apsc sensor is holding up very well in low light vs the d610 FF. Wondering if I really need this d610.

  • Nice one bigrizz! Wondering what people are selecting in the retail store location when claiming the $300 cashback on the website. It doesn't look like there is an option for online.

    • There is a online store option when claiming from JB Hifi.

      • Thanks! Must be blind!

  • UPDATE: Pulled out all the accessories to discover a second genuine brand new battery! There's another $80 worth right there. I'm off to the races. Feeling lucky…

  • I had bought the d610 ex display from this deal.
It would cost me $1000 after cashback. The product has not arrived yet.

But i would now like to order a brand new one from teds using the xmas ebay code which would come to ~1220 after cashback and discounts.

My question is .. Can jb hifi simply accept return of the d610 i ordered from them and refund the entire amount if i just open and check the ex display camera for shutter count ????

    • If it hasn't shipped, they will refund you and cancel the order. You can do it all online.

  • The order has been shipped but not delivered yet.

  • I know this deal is now marked as expired however I'm looking at upgrading my old faithful D90 and was hoping to get a bit of advice. I have pretty much narrowed down that I will be sticking with Nikon due to I have a SB600 flash and a 50mm 1.8 prime, I'm familiar with settings. I was looking at D7200 and sticking with my 18-105mm lens, what would others suggest? Would the D610 be a suitable option (I would also need to factor in fx lens).

    Thanks

    • That's one of those highly subjective questions. Invariably, the answer is 'it depends on what you want to do with it'. I upgraded from a D7000 to the D610 and honestly, I am yet to be blown away with some dramatic difference in picture quality, usability or any other particular area. I put a good amount of that down to the fact that I haven't tested the limits of the capabilities of the D610. Chasing the kids around the house is not a fair assessment of a prosumer full frame camera like the D610. So if you're expecting dramatically improved performance from a D610 over the D7200, you'll be disappointed.

It doesn't sound like you're heavily invested in DX lenses, so that's not a good enough reason to stick with DX. Judging from the list of lenses you seem to own, I'd recommend sticking with a DX camera because you don't appear to have caught the FX lens disease. That is, owning a whole bunch of expensive FX lenses that are largely wasted on a DX camera. Don't take this the wrong way but it may also suggests that you're not a super serious photography snob and you're likely to never pine for an FX camera.

      I've now owned and sold a D70s, two D80s, a D90, a D7000 and now a D610. I've owned a huge collection of lenses because I love the tech as much as photography. 35mm 1.8g, 50mm 1.8d, 105dc f/2, 70-200mm VR, 80-200 2.8, 18-200mm, 18-105mm, 18-70mm, 28-105mm, 28-80mm, 50mm 1.8g and Tokina 11-16 - that's just off the top of my head. It was inevitable I would eventually go to FX. Do I need it? If I was honest with myself, no. As my wife says, it's a want and not a need.

A long-winded answer that probably could have been summarised to, 'it's up to you but you probably don't need nor will ever need an FX camera'.

      • Thanks, you have been helpful. My initial reason for upgrading was I want better video and was considering getting a good video camera however with my SLR being old I figured time for an upgrade.

Not heavily invested at all. It would be good if there was something in between (maybe a D300 replacement that has been rumoured for years).

Thanks for the tip about the D610.

The next step up would be the D750 but considering cost is double and I would need a new lens means the D7200 is it!

        Cheers
