No Band 28 for Telstra 4G for anyone interested.

    • +1

None of the Xiaomi phones have B28 700 MHz. Waiting to see if the Mi5 will have B28.

      • Very True. In fact none of the Chinese ones have B28 support except few Infocus ones.

        • +4

For the simple reason that not many networks worldwide use it.

        • @Clear: If most of the major players have B28, Xiaomi should also. It is now a major international brand.

        • @ranagade: Xiaomi isn't in many countries officially yet, like Australia for example. When/If they expand into the West then they'll probably add those bands.

    • +4

Using this phone on the Telstra 4G network right now. Pretty much always connected to 4G, Adelaide city and surrounding suburbs.

      • 4G will be fine, but you're missing out on 4GX speeds without the 700mhz band.

    • would have loved this phone, but ended up getting the moto g 3rd gen for almost 100 more…

      i regret nothing.

  • +3

Good phone for anyone that likes MIUI but custom ROMs are lacking. I am running an AOSP ROM on mine and it lags pretty badly and I dislike MIUI so its not a phone for me unfortunately.

The 3G and 4G reception is solid in metro on Optus though. B28 not a big deal on Optus as they have infilled with B7 and B40 quite heavily in Sydney/Melbourne/Brisbane CBD.

Optus 4G towers by Bands http://oztowers.com/Home/Bands#tabs-2

  • Any code for Different color for this price?

  • +9

Love this phone and the miui personally. Runs extremely smooth and fast. Battery life is awesome aswell :)

    • +2

on the newest miui7, i can get one week of battery!!!! the standby time is GOD LIKE, iOS quality! THis is with about 30 minutes of screen time per day

  • +4

I bought this phone when it was for sale through GearBest and this was my personal experience:

Random Ads appearing while using phone normally (ads for games, apps, etc) on home screen.
Automatic downloading of 'virus' removal apps (had to manually remove).
Phone eventually died and is now sitting on my desk and won't charge, I suspect the USB port has broken. Used it for about 28 days.

Had MIUI6. Not negging the deal as I paid $265 so its much cheaper, just venting because angry..

    • +2
      • Never got the chance to unfortunately, phone died.. MIUI7 looked amazing to me!
I'm in the midst of a warranty claim, but they aren't replying, even through PayPal..

    • +2

the random ads and stuff is spyware, the phones flashed by chinese people have heaps of spyware

I wouldnt try doing any internet banking or logging into any secure sites when your phone is filled with it :)

      • +5

Some suppliers can be dodgy unfortunately. Flashing a new ROM can solve it and we can provide instructions for people who aren't sure too.

        • +2

          Hi Clear,

My brother bought the Redmi Note 2 Prime from GeekBuying about 5 weeks ago and is having these very popups. There are many APK's on the phone and when deleted they re-appear. Popups happen at least once an hour and often 3+ at a time.

Do you have any advice on possible fixes? I've tried everything I can think of so far!

          Thanks

        • +3

@Benjamin7711: Step 1: Root phone and install https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jumobile.m… to remove problem apps.

Step 2: Flash custom ROM and pray for the best!

        • +2

@dundy: Safer to just install the correct stable rom i would say - unless you are a dev and into the root options

        • @dundy:
Thanks for the reply mate. Unfortunately there's no "problem apps" as such coz they never get past the popup that says do u want to install. Unless I'm misreading what you've said?

        • +1

@Benjamin7711: Ah, true, you're right. I actually remember removing apps I thought to be the cause of the ads

        • +4

Yes like you guys… I bought from GeekBuying too and they indeed install dodgy ROMs. Constant pop ups and automatic downloading of dodgy apps/games. If you don't want to go through the hastle of reflashing I suggest you buy from another company.

        • @BB11: This is almost enough to make me buy elsewhere… but the phones are so nice and cheap and the workarounds are bearable…

        • +1

@dundy: I will add that it is a great phone once you reflash and I'm not sure if this is still the case but I did get free TNT shipping with GeekBuying when I bought from them so at least shipping was quick once it left the warehouse (10 days all up).

        • +1

@BB11: Not everyone has been having this issue. Either Geekbuying's supplier is dodgy or the ROMs they're using are. I'll follow it up with them.

        • +1

@Benjamin7711: I'd say it has a dodgy ROM and would need to be reflashed with a new one. We can dig up some instructions if you need them.

        • @Clear:
No worries mate thanks. For example, if I flash to the official miui 7 beta does this count as being "reflashed" and essentially removing the spyware?

        • +7

          This is what I did.

          • Download TWRP from http://en.miui.com/thread-152550-1-1.html
          • Rename it to update.zip and put it onto the phone
          • Shut down the phone and boot with Volume UP held. choose English from languages and install update.
          • ** NOW you have TWRP **
          • Boot into TWRP by shutting down and starting with volume UP held.
          • Attach phone to PC and copy a stock ROM on it from Xiaomi.eu e.g. https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=24269982086994769
          • Go to TWRP -> WIPE and do a full WIPE of System, Data and Cache partitions
          • Go to TWRP -> Install and choose the above ROM zip file you downloaded and flash (you may have to do this twice as after a full wipe it fails the first time)
          • Boot phone. You should now have full stock MIUI with Google Apps already installed
        • +2

@Benjamin7711: Same issue with phone from Everbuying. There's no official global rom with Google apps so vendors are flashing the phone for international customers, unfortunately some installed roms preloaded with malware.
Download official roms from MIUI site.
If download is slow change the link address from http://bigota… to http://obigota
Note this will remove all Google apps (GAPPS) along with the malware. So no youtube etc. found out the hard way.

To get GAPPS you'll need to root the phone with TWRP (note chances of bricking the phone) before installing GAPPS.
All info can be found in MIUI forum.

No complains with the phone aside from the low quality audio from speakers.

        • +1

@Benjamin7711: Yes if you flash MIUI Beta 7 it will be all good.

      • -7

Wouldn't trust any brand that has this happen to its own handsets.

I know this was a bit deal a while back showing malware up on some known handsets.

        • +8

the spyware isnt installed by the phone manufacturer Xiaomi, its installed by third party re-sellers.

anyone with any android phone can do the same

        • +1

@Makoto: Correct - i bought the mi4 following the previous ozbargain post here: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/196646

After some fiddling around and help from @batrarobin i re-installed stable rom and all bloatware app and (what i would consider malware) ads were removed. Still a bit annoying to have to do this.

PS - how does this phone compare to the mi4?

    • This happened to my Chuwi Dual 0S Tablet. It keeps downloading something I never install before and it suggests me to "buy" anti virus software. I had to turn them off manually.

    • Can you charge the phone? Flashing a clean ROM is very easy.

Just DL the ROM from Xiaomi.eu and rename it to Update.zip. Place it in the root directory of the phone. Use the built in Updater to update the firmware. Takes about 7 minutes.

      • +1

Can't charge the phone it seems.. Plugging it into the charging cable makes the LED turn on red for a few minutes, then goes off. Plugging into the computer makes it 'recognised' for about 15 seconds, then disconnects, then repeats indefinitely..

        • I guess it's the hardware problem then. Have it replaced and straight away flash the EU ROM.

        • +2

@HandsomeMonkey: Gearbest is being very difficult - only offering store credit at this point (for less than the sale price, mind you). They basically aren't owning the fact that the phone is faulty. Ah well, hopefully PayPal will quicken the process..

        • +2

          @dundy:

          Ahh Gearbad..

        • @HandsomeMonkey: Good thing others won't be caught up in their crap since they got banned ;)

        • have you removed the plastic in the battery area covering the contacts?

        • @Makoto: Do you mean removing the 10 or so screws and lifting up the back plastic? No I haven't, why would I do that?

        • +1

@dundy: The back cover of the Xiaomi Redmi Note is removable without screws. The battery has a protective plastic cover that needs to be removed.

        • @Clear: Not sure what you mean, I know its not unibody as I've had the battery in and out many, many times. From what I can see there is no protective battery cover on the battery, the contacts are very much exposed and not covered..

        • @dundy: That's disappointing. Looks like it's hardware or the broken connector as you said. Hopefully PayPal will help sort it out.

    • looks like yours was custom loaded with malware. Better to buy from ibuygou or qd-au ebay, trusted sellers

  • Spare Battery is also avaiable for those interested. If you tick the battery under the phone on the product page and click "Add selected items to cart" you'll get an extra 30c off.

    • hi Clear, can you let us know first what kinda sale will have on 19th november for xiaomi? it said on the website "XIAOMI CENTRE" is that include the phone as well?
      http://promotion.geekbuying.com/promotion/2015_bestsellers

      • Sorry, I don't even know myself. The fact that it says Xiaomi Centre makes me believe that it will have some phones, but I'm not sure if that will be all of them.

      • +1

It's live now anyway. Looks to be some phones and even the 20000mAh power bank.

  • @Clear This battery is not original. Beware.

    • I'll find out.

      • AliExpress has em for one third the price too.

        • Okay, it's not an original as they're not officially out yet, but the quality on this one is good.

        • @Clear: mate, you're are so wrong. Before you make such claims, do you even have one? The capacity is no where near the original/claimed capacity.

        • @spy: That's what they told me.

  • Is this the same phone?
    http://www.everbuying.com/product1078807.html

It is AUD 217.75, there is also possibility of getting $50 and/or 10% off once you sing-up with them…

    • yeah same phone however exchange rate is wrong. it will show up as $250 aud in paypal checkout

      • I thought they allow you to using AUD. AUD 217.75 what is mentioned by them in their webpage.

        • +1

i thought so to but every time i proceeded to checkout it changes to 250 aud in paypal

        • @kungfu_tofu: bought Ó e last week and followed up with PayPal, strangely it worked out for me that if you go through with the payment you are not slugged this extra amount. With I had taken a screenshot to show the PayPal people but it's all good, downright confusion though! Wasted an hour trying to work out what was going on

        • @Jackson:

Can you clarify what you mean, you got to pay the AUD217.75 instead? The USD amount does not convert to this, the USD is a little higher than the amount posted in the deal

        • @Jackson:
can anyone else conform this please?

        • @jontymate: Sorry guys answered in a rush and still am, if you need more wait til tonight. Basically i went through the process to pay via CC using their paypal gateway, and it had 270 when it should have been 240, went back, changed to paypal, same thing, couldn't work it out, eventually I just pulled the trigger, next day called paypal, they said check your bank statement, I did, 243. The paypal account showed the USD amount which was 169 or so, and for some reason it does a conversion for you but then it charges the US amount and not the converted aus amount they show you. HOpe that makes sense

        • @Jackson: So we asked can we pay the lower AUD converted amount and you said yes, but have described your scenario proving well and truly that we pay the USD amount

        • @NotBritishorUK: no, I described a scenario where I paid the USD amount and had been presented with 2 different AUD amounts, one low on everbuying and one high on PayPal, and can confirm I paid the low everbuying one.

Either way how do you think they come up with the AUD amount? Do you really think there are a team of people working this out for every country? It's just done on rate. The rate from EB was lower than what PayPal reported and when I checked my statement that's what it was. Hope that's clear

        • @Jackson:

Apologies for coming off a bit snotty but that is not the scenario we were talking about but I can see how you thought it might have been your scenario.

What is happening here is that the USD amound is around USD$170 like you say which does convert to around AUD$240, no idea why your paypal ever said AUD$270
However the website shows $217 when you change to AUD prices. AUD$217 is clearly not a correct conversion.

What happened with you was not that they went with the lower everbuying rate but instead they converted the USD properly, AUD$270 wasn't right. If they convert our USD amount properly they will get around the AUD$240 again, not AUD$217. Therefore the deal posted is cheaper.
We wanted to know if we could pay the AUD$217. Your reply was that you are not slugged with the extra amount, but we will be.

        • +2

@NotBritishorUK: ok I get it, I would agree with you, in that you almost certainly would be. The only way I would see it working out for you is taking a screenshot, then buying and pleading misadvertising and asking for a partial refund, but I doubt they would give you more than a store credit. Maybe if you want to buy it anyway you could?

  • +2

Great phones, quite refined. Love MIUI which runs zippy as. Makes Maple Myphones look so overrated.

  • Got this from Aliexpress for around the same price with quick delivery with DHL.

As other people have said beware the bloat wear ect. But this is easy to fix just load a ROM. easy done.

    Best phone for this price.

Also if you don't want the prime just go the TDD china version. cheap cheap cash money.

    • interesting, which store? can you give the link please?

      • +1

cant get access from work, but ill send you later tonight.

        • me too please!

    • For me TNT (3-5 Business Days) to ACT was free.

    • id like a link too thanks

    • what is TDD china version?

      • +2

TDD version is the local China version but it has identical hardware to the FDD international version.

Note the TDD and FDD is different then the Prime version, which has slightly better specs.

  • I am so disappointed. There were random ads appearing for me too and when I manage to remove them all. Invalid IMEI symbol started to appear. That was gift to my mom and now had to buy a new mobile. Would highly advice to stay away. Learnt my lesson.

    • +2

The adds and bloat wear are loaded from 3rd party's, not the manufacture.

You need to load a ROM custom or stable to remove the junk software. MIUI web site is where you will find instructions. If you like I can send you the links.

It is very easy to do.

      • It would be of a great help if you could post or message me the link. Thanks.

    • +1

invalid imei is a common easy to fix problem, your phone is fine.

    • Ads are just nuisance. Bigger problem is that your personal information might have been broadcast to many servers already.

  • +9

Hey guys add tempered glass screen protector to cart along with the redmi note 2 32gb and apply coupon code NVDLMATX. it took 17% off subtotal! got it shipped for $233.43 AUD with screen protector

    • +2

Also, pay in USD using 28 degree or Bankwest platinum card. TNT shipping (3-5 days) is only USD1.16 extra. All up, comes to about AUD227 at current exchange rates. Not bad.

    • I used this thanks but not sure about your 17% calculation, mine took $12 off which is about 7%

Looks like the AUD has jumped slightly too so this phone is now a little cheaper!

      • you are right think i was meant to say 7 instead of 17 haha

  • +2

Lack of screen protection kills this for me unfortunately no gorilla or dragontail :(

    • +1

I said unfortunately and i never said it was a bad deal why the neg? I would buy it for sure if it had screen protection

      • +1

        Have an upvote ;)

  • does this means it doesnt work for vodafone 4g 850mhz (but it does have 1800mhz)

    • +2

Yes felixco. It will not work with Vodafone 4G 850mhz which is Band 5.

  • +1

Bought the 32GB earlier, just be careful of dust collecting on the lens of the front camera. The sealing between the glass panel and the camera module doesn't seem to be that great. Similar reports can also be found on XDA forum as well, which means that this is not an issue of an individual unit.

Using this with both Optus and Boost mobile and coverage seems to be quite good around SE Qld. Make sure that you install the official rom from xiaomi.eu if you are worried about malware, it's super easy to do and takes less than 10 minutes to do so.

    • the redmi line is budget and has some compromises. If u buy a Mi4 or Mi4i or Mi4c you get a bit more of a 'flagship'

    • are you able to clean the lens?

      • Not easily as far as I can tell.

I have read some comments on XDA forums and it seems like compressed air, vacuuming the headphone jack or dismantling are the only few methods to clean that up.

        • been reading and apparently got there through audio jack and people suggest blowing in it. have you tried that?

  • Here's an old comment from a similar post:

    A few things to note

    • Overheating makes my hands sweat. 8 Cores, overclocked, what do you expect?
    • Camera is poor. Really not worth taking photos unless the subject is incredibly still, otherwise a ghosting effect is really visible.
    • MiUi 7 does(did) not come preinstalled, because it's not released. There are Alphas going around but I considered it too much effort considering…
    • Buggy MiUi 6. Restarting crashes with certain games. Annoying things that can't be removed or disabled like the Chinese only app store that hijacks any browser app install links. Language can apparently be addressed with a global ROM, but meh.
    • It now has adware viruses that add links into any links in chrome, browser, firefox, opera. Avast isn't able to detect the malware. Coming from OSX, iOS, this pisses me off to no freaking end. How is this a thing, on my personal phone in the freaking future? THIS IS NOT ACCEPTABLE
    • Music occasionally pauses randomly (app crash). Sucks when you're in the shower with a bluetooth speaker.
    • Music control widget doesn't play music (after app crash). Has to be opened, played and then the widget will work until next time it crashes.
    • Basically MiUi is an iOS rip off. Which is fine, it tries to simplify things and I like that. But even the 'previous' version of the OS sucks. I wouldn't count on MiUi 7 being more stable when it is released (possible next year). I'll try installing vanilla android for the best experience soon.
    • Terrible speaker on the back of the phone which is muffled/muted/sealed when lying on a flat surface. I have slept in thanks to the quietness when using the alarm.

    APART FROM ALL THAT

    • Ridiculously great phone
    • Super cheap phone
    • Super fast phone
    • Fantastic screen
    • Very decent battery life after the honeymoon phase
    • Makes Samsung users look like pretentious Apple users spending ridiculous amounts on phones.

Addendum, I have upgraded to MIUI7 and the issues with music pausing and the music widget not working has been fixed. The International ROM also prevents app links from being hijacked from the google play store into the Chinese Xiaomi version.

    • I have been using MIUI 7 rom from the EU website for over a month now, the ROM is stable and responsive. To be honest, I think it is equally as reliable as my previous Moto G 2nd Gen, if not better. YMMV, however.
