Bought one at last eBay 20% off Kogan sale. A very good monitor.

How much did you buy on eBay?

  • Has anyone used LG 29" and 31" wide screen one? If so which one is good for work?

    • +2

      I love these things.

The 29s are amazing. For document work, the size is almost exactly three A4 pages lined up next to each other. So get some papers out to get a feel for the size of it.
Software can treat it as a triple Portrait monitor setup with no bezel gaps.

For other work, using it as a single monitor with extra space on the sides for toolbars works really well.

The 34" is a bit big for my liking but likely good for graphics / video - the 3440x1440 versions are probably a must at that size which means it's a lot more expensive.

Keep in mind that these monitor can have fairly low height. It won't have the height of say a 24" 16:9 monitor for example.

    • +4

Agreed. These are more like 19" monitors in height. I was looking at this but ended up with a U2414 instead.

        That's not how maths works.

      • +1

        Sadly not. 24" 16:9 LG vs the 21:9 25":

        Dimensions (W x D x H) (mm) 567.6 x 401.2 x 248 mm 609 x 383 x 188 mm

      • +2

        Using https://www.sven.de/dpi/

        25" 21:9 = 58.51cm × 24.68cm
        24" 16:9 = 53.13cm × 29.89cm
        20" 16:9 = 44.28cm × 24.91cm
        27" 16:9 = 59.77cm × 33.62cm

Are these dimensions of the actual display size or the monitor size. Because the display size is different from the monitor size. Please see the picture in the LG website they will show how it's look like 21:9vs 16:9

@siva: all you are displaying is your lack of monitor knowledge.

I was thinking the same thing. I would like a bigger, better monitor for photo editing, but there's no point going wider. 16:10 seems to be a decent aspect ratio for lightroom.

      • I really miss my old Dell 16:10, good for nearly everything. The U2515 is too expensive for me at the moment :(

      • Everybody's got different budgets and use cases but I'd also recommend running multiple monitors for productivity-type work. In general, it's really great to be able to have your "output" on one screen and your "working" (tools etc) on the other.

I haven't played with it in a couple years but last time I did, Lightroom had decent support for multi-monitor.

Also if you're photo editing and you do a lot of portraits, you can rotate one monitor for full-time portrait-mode.

  • I find 29" ultrawides a tad too small and 34" ultrawides too big.

Does anyone make anything in the middle perhaps a 31" Ultrawide?

    • Ah first world problems lol

I have a Dell 34" UW with a curve which I think helps at the larger size.

I replaced 2 x 24" 16:9 and the vertical height of the UW is smaller as mentioned above. I wouldn't go any smaller than 34" because the height would be too small IMO.

      • The 34" Ultrawide has the height of a 27" monitor right? and the 29" Ultrawide is just short of a 24" monitor? ummm.

        • +1

I just measured the old Dell 24" has a display height of 324mm and the new 34" UW has a display height of 332mm. So the 34" UW display is actually 6mm taller.

That said the perception when going from 2 x 24" 16:9 screens to 1 x 34" UW screen is that the total screen area is smaller. I was a bit disappointed to be honest as I had expected it to be enormous (TWSS).

Based on the measurements I don't think the 34" UW is the height of a 27"…more like a 24".

        • @myfeetarehappy: Thanks mate, good info.

        • +1

@omygodde: It's a 2405 FPW so 1920 x 1200 16:10. So maybe its display height is taller than a 16:9 24"…didn't occur to me until just now lol.

        • @myfeetarehappy:
Based on your measurements and bentan77 calculations above, the 34" 21:9 would have a height similar to a 27" 16:9. 332mm vs 336mm.

        • @myfeetarehappy: Haha I deleted that comment because I thought it's one of the 24" 16:9 you mentioned above. Good to know it's actually a 16:10.

        • @TheContact: @TheContact: Yes I forgot my old Dells were 16:10. Sorry for the confusion :-/

        • @myfeetarehappy: The actual screen area would definitely be smaller with the 34" UW than 2x 16:10 24". It may be slightly taller and have more pixels (~8% more if your 24s are 1200p), but it's not as wide as 2x24" next to each other.

From Dell site, Active Display Area (H x V):
          U3415W 798.20 mm x 334.80 mm = ~2672 cm squared
          U2412M 518.4 mm x 324.0 mm = ~1679 cm squared

So 2xU2412M = ~3359 cm squared, or about 25% more actual screen area than the 34" UW - at slightly lower pixel density. It makes sense because it's effectively 32:10 ratio vs 21:9 ratio, with similar heights. 2x24" take up a fair chunk more horizontal space on your desk too.

… if I did the maths right :)

  • Anyone have a good or bad experience with Kogan and large electronics like monitors? I don't want to buy a monitor from then to discover a few dead pixels and then go through mailing hell to return it etc.

  • Can these be wall mounted?

  • Btw they added free shipping recently.
OP u might wanta update the title
