  • Anyone know why a VISA debit can't be used to beat the booking fees ?

    • Probably because Visa didn't give them a discount on their fees for transactions with a visa debit card.

ME bank dishes out mastercard debit cards if you're looking for one.

A Qantas Cash card doubles as a mastercard debit card too - I have only ever used it to buy tiger flights (sorry Qantas)

Just price match with Jetstar to beat the booking fees and save 10% on top.
If you price match you can pay any method you want without fees.

  • +2

only for those without debit mastercards:
byojet.com.au have $20 off with paypal payment BUT they charge the 8.50 tiger fee PLUS their own 12.95 booking fee, so that fully (plus more) offsets the savings of paypal promo, but works out better than booking direct with tiger with a non-debit mastercard.

    • Do they still charge the tiger fee if you use a debit mastercard?

      • couldn't tell you, didn't head down that path

  • +3

If you price beat Jetstar's fare and then pay for it. I don't think they ask you for any fees if my memory serves me right.

    • Correct

    • Yes did it last month but for jetstar. Price beat tigers fare for this month's trip and no fee charged using visa card

  • just out of curiosity, how is tiger able to keep up with more competitive sales while everybody just use it as a price beat source. this is not fair.
    thanks OP for sharing though.

    • +1

More to the point: how is Jetstar able to beat this low price, take 10% off and take away the usual booking fees?
I don't think Jetstar can be profiting on $26 (all up!) flights?

A very tiny percentage of people must price match. They have strict rules, such as flights departing within 1 hour of each other. So it takes a lot of hassle to book. So many people can't be bothered, aren't eligible, or don't know about it. Or they are very loyal Tiger customers (lol).

      • Very true I had no idea about price beat until only this year and have since booked twice with Jetstar using pricebeat. Mel-Syd return for 2 $108 and mel-gc return for 2 $99. It's not a hassle when you're saving 10% and booking fees :).

        • Did you book during weekdays or something? At least for this deal, I couldn't manage anything that low for weekends.

        • theyre both 6 day trips Thursday - Wednesday works out better for us as we rather spend a Saturday and Sunday on holiday and not have to worry about being up early to leave on weekends.

        • Wow. That's the $20 cheaper than the price beat fare I paid for 1 syd to melb return. Wish I could take advantage of these early sales but i just can't commit to a trip more than 2 or more months away lol.

        • I booked the Sydney trip late October for middle Jan so that wasn't too bad. But I booked the gc trip 2 weeks later for August lol Just couldn't resist it for $99.

      • Yep, last time I tried to price match, the Tiger flight had booked out by the time the Jetstar rep got to me, so the next alternative was more expensive even after the price match. Questionable whether it's worth the time and effort.

I think OzBargainer's confirmation bias has a lot to do with it.

Only a small sub-set of the population actually knows about the price-matching policy and a much smaller number would be bothered to pursue it. On OzBargain you're a hero if you waste an hour of your life trying to save $20 on flights. In real life a lot of people wouldn't be as impressed.

Despite my cheapness as a badge of honour, even I couldn't wait for Jetstar to reply to my price matching request. The price and timing was too good to miss and the options were dropping like flies. Since Jetstar price-matching hasn't been taken up as a pact by the general Australian population it's still a risky maneuver to make for crazy rare deals ($10 flights in mid-high/high season).

      • "In real life a lot of people wouldn't be as impressed." - correction: in real life, a lot of people aren't as stingy low-middle class as ozbargainers. ;)

A couple weeks ago I needed to book a night flight for the following weekend.
The cheapest price on any website (Tiger, Virgin, Jetstar, Qantas) was $140 + booking fees.
I found a Virgin flight for $68 through a third-party website but it was charging $30 booking fees. It was also a fairly dodgy looking site (cheaptickets or something similar?).

Price matched! $62, including baggage and no fees. Directly with Jetstar.
That was just one-way. I saved on the other way too.

It is definitely worth chatting to someone to save $100!

I would not price match unless the difference is huge. Tiger has improved and I would like to see it do well, so that competition is maintained. Otherwise fares will surely rise.

  • Thanks TA! Perfect timing, family is coming over to visit and I can get cheap flights to PPP for the Whitsundays :) and get 10% from Jetstar !

  • +1

Thanks TA. Just booked a flight; $187.5 return for 2 from SYD>OOL in Feb after Jetstar pricematch. Would have been $20 cheaper but I wanted to guarantee we sit together.

Depart fri night and return sunday night so that's why the price is higher than the $29pp quoted in this post (mostly weekday availability).

    • If you use online check-in 2 days before, it is likely that you can sit together without paying surcharge. (but not guaranteed)

      • Yeah I had this in mind but I haven't travelled domestically for a while, so wasn't sure how busy it gets. Considering how much I would hate to sit away from my partner, I bit the bullet. And at least this way, we get seats close to the front of the plane.

I haven't even looked at the deal properly yet but +1 for the fancy RED arrows in the subject line.

  • Anyone else trying to book for FEB 2016? Not letting me, the deals only show for MAR-APR?

  • how does the " is the flight within one hour of jetstars service " work?

    • Well, you ask if the tiger and jetstar flights leave within one hour of each other………………..

      • holy crap, denied because flight was 1 hour and 5 minutes different

well, looks like ill be on tiger then chaps !!

  • Note: We are experiencing some technical difficulties with our Price Beat Guarantee. As a result, we are currently unable to offer this service on some flights. We are working to fix the issue so, if we were unable to help you today, please check back at a later time.

Jetstar price beat coming back tomorrow afternoon?

  • All good for me - just booked 3 adult tickets through Jetstar's price match (plus an infant who is free on Jetstar and not on Tiger where it is $30 per sector apparently), return MEL-ADL for late Feb 2016, for a total of $208 (no booking fees or extra charges). Much shorter wait than usual on chat - only about 10 mins. Thanks again TA!

  • Damn! When did this expire, me and the lady literally had annual leave approved yesterday to take advantage of this, and now its gone…
