VMware Black Friday Deals 30% 40% off e.g. Workstation Pro 12 $179.97 Fusion 8 $67.16

Upgrades are even cheaper! I've been waiting to upgrade my VMware Fusion 7 for El Capitan so it looks like this is a good opportunity. VMware Store only discounts products a few times every year so get it while it's hot :)

This is part of Black Friday / Cyber Monday deals for 2015

  • Workstation Pro 12 for $179.97 is a fantastic deal. It's a shame the website is slower than a 1 legged dog.

  • The Australian pricing looks better than the US for a change (when taking into consideration conversion).

  • Why would you not just use VirtualBox for free?

    • Why would you not just use VirtualBox(virtualbox.org) for free?

Why would you say something so ridiculous? I guess you run a Linux distro instead of Windows because that is also free*?

*ignoring all the additional costs of "Free" software like usability and support.

      • I guess you run a Linux distro instead of Windows because that is also free*?

I run linux on my laptop because it just works and Windows instances in VirtualBox for when I need them.

*ignoring all the additional costs of "Free" software like usability and support.

Usability as per the examples of Windows Vista or Windows 8?

As for support, just how much support to Microsoft provide for free? With open-source products I can obtain support and if I wish to use older versions of software can back port patches.

      • This price only gives you.. 30 days of complimentary installation support. So support wise, there is very little difference between this and a "Free Product".

I dont mind Virtualbox except that its crashed on me on a number of occasions that I stopped using it and went with Hyper-V instead since its "Free" and inbuilt into my Windows 8.1/10 Pro edition.

To be honest though - $300 on the RRP is ridiculous price to pay given the competition is excellent for fractions of the cost (or no cost). Even $180 seems a bit steep. What gets me is that the Mac Version of Fusion is $67 on special now.. whilst the equivalent on Windows version is the Workstation pro for $180 on special. Almost three times as much as the Mac version with similar functionality and capability. To me, its a rort and even the "Player" is a joke to ask $120 for the cut down version that does not even make new VM's.

      • Not ridiculous at all, especially for Fusion.

How many times have you contacted VMWare for support? I think the only times I've ever received support for software was regarding payment and licensing. Otherwise I just use the forums. I have filed bug reports though.

I'd also rate VMWare and VirtualBox about the same on usability too.

        • You're missing the point. The ridiculous part is the huge price gap between Fusion and Workstation Pro. Advantages of WSP compared to Fusion? Very little to none that most people will use. If WSP was the same price as Fusion being on the Windows Platform instead of the Mac, then I'd quite happily pay it. But not at 3x the cost.

        • @bchliu:

You can see by the threading that I was replying to Maverick-au who was making a very different point to you.

    • I had issues with it breaking a few dev environments I had which while not the end of the world, did result in being a complete waste of time as I rebuilt them. Decided to shell out for VMware Workstation and never had any issues with it in terms of reliability.

If it works for you then yeah, it's probably a good option. The issues I had made VMware a worthwhile investment.

  • price goes up a lot…. but if you need it, it is a good deal. as VMWARE normally don't do discount.
