Dodgy Deal by Shopping Express, What Should Their Penalties Be ??

Shopping Express announced this deal

Black Friday 3 Day Sale: N54L Microserver $199, Laptop From $199, 240GB SSD $89 @ Shopping Express

https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/221366

And it got a massive 121 Votes and at the time of Writing : (13099 clicks)

In a large part due to the attractively priced : N54L Microserver $199 This drove up the votes, and traffic and wasted everyone's time. See Comments here:

As many users have reported they were registered ready and waiting to place the order at 8:00 and still the $#!#Baggy Company did not honour the deal and within 7 minutes marked it as sold out. Unless Verified Ozbargainers here can attest to the fact that they actually were able to buy the deal this is complete BOLLOCKS. They used this as advertising to offer some attractive pricing but did not have to even honor the deal as all the comments regarding this issue are on Page 3 and by this time the deal has been active with over 100+ votes for 3 days.

This is a DODGY Marketing practice and needs to be penalized severely so it serves as an example to other reps to not come here with flaky deals and lies like this. With dodgy Votes on a combined deal like this newbies are more likely to buy it thinking it is highly rated by the community but in reality the deal is not really a deal.

As a side to this there was another decent deal for the N54L Microserver whcih didn't do as well because hey Shopping Express was cheaper..

What does the community think ?

  • Yea if they really did use it as bait to get up voted to make the deal look like a kicker for unregistered or causal ozbargainers to be conned into thinking the other stuff is a bargain than there should be some form of repercussions.

It's bad enough when items sell out in seconds flat because there was like 3 in Stock, but to never have it even go down and mark it as sold, yea that's beyond frustrating.

If you skim the comments on the deal page, you get some crazy stuff:

"And, yes, the price stayed at $299 for the whole time, up until. 8.10pm, then it changed to $199 with "Out of stock"…"

If that is the case, Shopping Express has some explaining to do and should honor such a deal.

    What does the community think?

Meh. Definitely not the first retailer that got OzBargained due to under supply. Catch of The Day did that years ago. Marketing practice? From their deal history I doubt they are short of customers.

    • Scotty,

But they need to be penalized in some way or must be forced to list individual items as deals instead of this where they do these tricks, it's wasting everyone's time and not good for the entire community.

You have been in this community for 4+ years and should have learnt that when a retailer has botched its promotion due to undersupply, you just sneeze and move on. They happen, all the time, and why do you automatically assume that these are "shady tricks"? ShoppingExpress has good history here. They stuffed up yesterday, and I hope they are better prepared next time. If we penalise shops for every stuff ups you guys won't see many deals here.

I see only 30 units available for the N54L. That's not exactly a lot of stock! And do people realise that SE isn't Australian? That there is a bigger audience that OzBargain to their deals?!

        • Thanks,
I like your take it easy attitude. Something I should learn,
I assume it is shady because
          1) no one here could buy it
2)I was online and waiting when waiting for this deal and didn't see the price change and the moment it did it was already marked sold out.
          3) others have Confirmed same thing as me.
          4) they manipulated the voting system successfully this time. Many votes were for this deal which boosted the sales of their other products which weren't as good in value

        • @dealman:

Someone accidentally ticked the associated box :P

Absolute load of shit. I even fell compelled before to purchase their gen8 server, but then realised that's exactly what they wanted from me. Typical click bait bullshit, wasted my time on a Friday night. Of all times to do it, 8pm on friday.

  • catch of the day did this time and time again. nothing new.

    • Ah Catchathon, where they had about 5x PS3s and their server couldn't handle the traffic!

      • +2

and we all fell for it… again and again

      • I managed to snag one of those, and I still hate the catchathons

  • Shopping square's promotions for black fridays are pathetic. Cross checking with the prices on static ice shows only minimal discounts and yes their bullshit baits.

If I find you a good deal on a N54l will you promise to stop complaining.

    • Alright my friend I will.
Just felt shafted by se.. Anyway, as Scotty said maybe should just move on, but it just feels so bloody wrong..

      • +2

        Leave it with me.

  • Shopping Express are usually pretty good.

With such good pricing no wonder their N54L sold out in 7 mins.

I know my missus and mate got 1 each…
