Cheapest Android Phone in December 2015

Looking for the "best" cheapest phone that runs Android in some flavour of version 4 and above.

Don't care bout speed, screen quality, sound quality, sdcard, future upgrades or anything else … other than it runs Android in some mildly compatible way with Facebook and other common apps, it connects to some AU frequencies and can hence recieve calls and sms.

Go!

Also I judged this to not be a dupe thread as all I could find posted recently was a guy wanting the best bang for buck vs. just the absolute cheapest Android device.

  • Just bought a Telstra Tempo (ZTE T815) from woolies for $29 which includes $10 calling credit. Runs ICS/4.4.2 and is a laggy assed piece of crap with only 2gb internal space but you can definitely make calls, send messages and run facebook.

Not sure what other apps you need to be able to run. Maybe clarify so we can go from there?

Otherwise I'm amazed at the amount of phone one actually gets for the price of a steak these days!

Cheers after some research it looks like the piece of crap for me :)

    • Hi jzdhgkd, does that device have enough grunt to run the Fallout Pip Boy app?

      • +1

Yes it does, and it fits the Pip Boy well.

  • Huawei Y550 (prepaid, cheap to unlock) Usually under $100 but has been as low as $60 during a one day big w sale lately.
A lot of phone for the money and very usable unlike some cheapies.

A 512MB dual core Android like the Tempo above will lag badly. If you want to wait 2-3 seconds for the Dialer and Messaging app to load go ahead. Optus' Alcatel Pixi 4.5 has 1GB RAM with an 8GB ROM and is quad core so actually has some balls behind it for only $69. Don't buy junk. You will be miserable. The Y550 has been replaced by the Y5 which is $100 or over at Telstra and only comes with a smallish 4GB ROM so it was rather meh to begin with.

    • The pixy sound pretty decent, also auspost has it for $69 plus $20 Google credit. So makes it even cheaper, just make sure it's easy to unlock.

    • Alternative to pixi is telstra 4GX Buzz for ~$63 and comes with free monster headphones!

    • I can confirm the lagging issue - Android being the bloated memory hog that it is 1GB is really the minimum to maintain "useable" speed for simple things like loading simple apps as you say. ;)

    • 4G bands are rubbish. Automatic fail.

      • Hmmm partially agree - seeing as we're talking about cheapies here the user may not care but it's something to be aware of.

For example for me not having 4G (I'm assuming you mean 4G optus and some Voda?) isn't a deal breaker.

  • OK so the Telsta Tempo is a little too low budget in performance - I was expecting lag but not multi-minute unresponsive black screens when it loads er … anything :D

So I think the ZTE Blade Qlux 4G aka Telstra 4GX Buzz http://www.gsmarena.com/zte_blade_qlux_4g-7294.php is the next best thing ATM as it crucially has 1GB RAM. It can be rooted + flashed as well :)

$70 ebay, yet to check elsewhere.

    • Or the Pixi 4.5 or the Huawei if you want to spend up a bit more. 4G bands, local stock, local warranty.
