  Air NZ codeshares with Air Rarotonga and it's often cheaper to get to Aitutaki on the one ticket if you're not staying on Raro.

  This is a good deal if you don't have that luxury though.

  I bought accommodation in Aitutaki and the flights there and back were NZ$180. Very soon after I bought accommodation the hotel must have told the airline about it and their flights went up to NZ$200.

  As there's no alternative (unless you cancel your accommodation) this is just a tourist scam. Beware, and if you're booking far ahead book your flights before accommodation.
