Have you grabbed one of the Zapals freebies and have had telemarketing calls lately?

Ok, so I've never had a major problem with telemarketing calls until this week where I've averaged one a day. User SpinningPlates and a couple of other users have posted in this thread https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/223608#comment-3265526 stating that they've received marketing calls not long after purchasing from Zapals. Now, I don't want to point fingers, but it seems like way too much of a coincidence. Their past couple of deals have also been posted by new accounts with extremely generic usernames.

edit: also voting doesn't really count if you were smart enough to give them a fake number ;)

Haven't been sucked into their freebie hype yet, and I won't ever be.

They can go advertise themselves where the sun doesn't shine.

    I was sucked into it.

I answer the phone, when I hear something about … "have you heard about…" or "This call may be recorded …" I hang up immediately and block the number.

    • If you can be bothered, lodge a complaint with the Do Not Call Register (https://www.donotcall.gov.au/) they will look into it for you and investigate the organisation.

i don't think they can do much about overseas callers

Don't people stop to think, that Zapals, isnt there for your benefit. Somehow these freebies must be paid for.

Same happened when you signed up for the free trip at the local shopping mall

Personally, I didn't really stop to think about it as I've literally ordered dozens of freebies from ozbargain deals with no problems at all. Probably should have been wary about all the warning signs with Zapals but in future I'll be less inclined to proceed with a freebie unless they've already established a good reputation. I even throw my number into a fair few forms in the competitions section of OzBargain with no problems.

Another curious thing I mentioned in the other thread is that the Zapals privacy policy states that information won't be passed on to any third parties without permission.

you could use a $5 aldi payg sim for dodgy purchases, competitions, etc. otherwise use a fake number for unknown sellers.

    This is Zapals Official reply:

We treat our customer privacy seriously and never ever sell to any 3rd party.

We provide your shipping information to courier as they required. Other than that, we have never ever provide your information to 3rd party in any form (free or sell).

    Question:
Have or will you sold or sell your customer's information to any 3rd party?

    Answer: NO.

    Question:
Will you send newsletter to your register users?

Answer: Yes, we would send newsletter to user for member only deals. But we provide unsubscribe function anyway.

    Question:
    Why I receive marketing call?

Answer: We don't know. We only know that is NOT from us. Please check if your number is listed in yellow/white page first. If you have paid ISP to keep your number out of yellow/white page. Please contact related authorities to investigate.

    Question:
Do I need to provide my contact number?

Answer: Courier required, But in our experience, only courier with tracking like DHL, Fedx, UPS, EMS require that. You don't need to provide it if you select non-tracking courier. It may increase the un-delivery rate , that's your choice anyway.

    Question:
Why you guys provide free offers then?

Answer: We are not only providing these offers to Australia, but for over 20 countries in the world. Australia is only 1/20 of our market share. The reason is simple, instead of investing millions of dollars to do pay marketing, we use free item (losing money) to ask the customer to try us. Try our great deal and try our service.

Twice I've signed up for zapas, twice I've been called within 2 days.

I have reasons to suspect Zapas official rep is either lying or they are leaking the database somewhere "unofficially", by some "hacker".

      • That's not possible form us if saying so.

        Other party (like courier) leading?

No. If you saying within 2 days. We even haven't send your order to courier because for the high volume free product promotion, we at least need 3 days to get the order sorted.

        Database leading?
That's close to 0 possibility. Our data security is backup by an Australian local IT firm with strong tech experience. They have experience on handling one of Australia's top 10 online store. Our database backup and security are being handled by them. Our data is protected not only by technology but by law.

We have had over 20 years experience in Australia before going overseas. We know how important our customer's privacy is.

Again, please do not fill in a real phone number if you doubt about that.

We welcome any feedback if the it is true. If you saying someone lying, you should have real evidence. I would say almost all our customers in Australia are honest, but can't guarantee some competitors or other people lying to the public for their own reason.
