Mother-in-law visiting us in Melbourne where should I take her

Hi everyone, need some help here. Just had a baby and mother-in-law came to visit us. Where should I take her.

She can barely walk like 500 meters before she gets tired. She has some knee problems.

I wanna take her somewhere around Melbourne at the same time I don't wanna trouble her with her knee problems.

Please help. Thanks

Brighton bathing boxes, maybe a drive in movie. If she doesn't mind long drives then the apostles, philip island and mornington are viable. Good luck with that Hellboy.

    Back to the airport? 😇😇😇

I used to have the same thinking as you,
Then realise the real thing is to ask her what she likes. she may or may not enjoy travel too much because of the knee pain.

she may just like to come and see her daughter happy and look at the grand child. Simple as this - family time.
may let her spent time at home with baby. you two go for a break for few hours.

Offer her a good massage esp the knee with a professional - I would .

Best advice. I had the same issue with my grandad. He is 80 and can barely walk 500m and I have no idea how managed to pass the medical test and get a visa. It was a terrible time for our family. He couldn't even hold his pee in and wet the carpet.

    Old Melbourne jail 😉

If she wouldn't mind being pushed in a wheelchair, how about Melbourne Zoo? —> Website states you can hire a wheelchair for free — Wheelchair cost: Free hire, bookings essential. Tel: (03) 9285 9300

    • You can also hire wheelchairs at Flinders Street and Southern Cross Station for the day for a reasonable price…

Pity about the knees, the melbourne markets would been good

    Too many cheap jokes, boys.

Just ask her where she wants to go. If she wants to go shopping you could consider the DFOs. There is lots of variety and stuff tends to be cheap.

There are a bucket of really good restaurants in Melbourne so I would find out what cuisine she likes and go to Zomato to find something good. If she doesn't want to go out in the evening there are some really amazing breakfast places around. Otherwise look at the takeaway options, or how well you cook.

The M-i-L has probably come down to make herself useful so just leave the three generations time to bond together.

Hope mother and child are doing well.

Take her for a drive up to the Dandenongs…do it on a week day if you can…beautiful drive and good scones with jam and cream and tea if she likes that sort of thing!
Minimal walking if you park outside cafe…heaps to choose from.
Apparently when cruise ships come in the Dandenongs is the most popular shore excursion.
The Yarra Valley is also beautiful but a bit further :)

Somewhere that she can't find her own way back.

I would leave her at home and you and your partner go out a bit

Just a few things off the top of my head that won't be too taxing but will let her experience Melbourne:

    • Eureka Skydeck
    • Colonial Tramcar Restaurant
    • Go to a show / comedy night
    • Werribee Open Range Zoo (from memory they have a safari bus tour where they drive you through the park)

      Good suggestionshere.
Although tramcar dinner needs to be booked well in advance but lunch can usually bebooked maybe a few days or 1 week, depending on other factors.

i think the main thing is that if the mother in-law cannot walk very far is she willing to get a wheelchair?

If you are game you could take a drive down the great ocean road but make sure you have a good nights rest beforehand.

Melbourne star is nice but very expensive, but as an ozbargainer im sure you could find a voucher for it.

If you wanted to take the inlaw around the city there are some great places you can just do a drive by.

Some places to keep in mind are St.Patricks cathedral, The Royal Exhibition Building, Queen Victoria Markets, Block/Royal arcade, Botanical Gardens, Fitzroy Gardens- Captain cooks cottage.
I could keep going but im not sure exactly what your mother in-law is into haha.
Most of these places have easy access for wheelchairs if she was willing to hire one as majority will require alot of walking.

Soure: work for foreigner tour company in melb.
If you have any specific details you want to know just ask :)

1000 Steps - Dandenong Ranges. Relaxing walk to the top I reckon

    • Don't be silly, she can't walk up the steps. Although if in a wheel chair she could cane it back down.

      • One must go up to come back down :)

    Where ru guys located/bayside?

It all depends what she would like.. what she enjoys eating/drinking.. inside or outside..

    • a meal at the local?
    • a cuppa and tapas by the beach
    • playcentre (do u have other kids?)
    • local christmas carols
    • zoo / werribee zoo gr8 idea
    • scones in the dandenongs awesome
    • live music (mellow) restaurant SE subs
    • bingo!

Take change for parking (or some have eftpos). Don't let MIL pay for any drinks/meals etc unless she bursts when insisting & tell her how wonderful she is. Always drop her off close then get a park.. I'd say she's a very lucky MIL and btw congrats on bubs!!! 💕❤

Ps. My MIL has knee probs and I'm trying to think of places we've taken her.. (obviously we haven't taken her out enuff!). eg. She loves the cafe at Ricketts Point, right on the beach.. she also LOVES the cockatoos and feeding area in the Dandenongs.

I would enjoy going to mornington Peninsula with small family. Lots of drive and not much walking. Go eat on some cafe with nice scenery

When my mother in law visited with similar issues, we hired her an electric wheelchair/scooter thing from Flinders Street Station:
    https://www.travellersaid.org.au/flinders-street
It was her first time with one of these things, and was not so keen on the idea at first, but it worked quite well and we could get around Melbourne CBD with us walking and her driving. I think it was best to book, as they only have a couple of them.

  • Carton of depends and the casino for a few days

  • Costco

  • Any serious answers? i'm interested too.

  • Melbourne Museum, then maybe an Imax movie right next door?
Melbourne Zoo is an obviously choice
DFO is probably the better choice for shopping and this is the place where I took my friends that visited from Hong Kong.
Go to Nandos or like Pieface as that's what I heard Australian's are known for in other countries.

  • A bit more info about your M-I-L interests/hobbies would be more helpful in giving advice

  • Coles

Get her a computer with internet and she can read ozbargain, specifically this page

  • Carlton brewhouse that should eze the pain that the day will bring lol

  • give her a ball of wool

its what the tv ads say to do in Melbourne

  • Sky diving

    • +2

Grannies on the go should base jump, its just more fun

Maybe wingsuit flying, but skydiving is for schoolgirls

  • Go-kart racing.

  • If you're not keen to travel too far, I reckon take her for a nice drive down to Mornington. One whole stretch of really nice beaches. Go for a stroll along any of the beaches, or you could even go to multiple scenic viewpoints and enjoy the view/sunset. It IS Summer, after all :)

  • The next ozbargs hook up?

  • docklands

  • It rubs the lotion on its skin or else it gets the hose again.

If your mother in law barely walks, I would suggest just bring her to botanical garden and just have a picnic. Enjoy the daylight, fresh air and family time.

Reality is that, she barely walks 500m and still wanted to come over means she's really keen to see her daughter (your wife) and her grandkid. All is needed is that.

Don't bother with distance that's too far for her. Long drive is tiring for you, wife and kid - not to mention MIL may have problems with that distance.
