Camtasia is good, but there's plenty of good alternatives

Camstudio is too buggy and does not capture properly. Has problems with uneven capture ratios etc. Have not tried OBS though.

Almost want to neg this post because its ridiculous how much of a price gap between the Windows and Mac versions. If all things are correct, then there should be more PC users than Mac's. Given the laws of Supply/demand, how do you substantiate a 300%+ cost difference between the platforms? It is the same issue with VMWare as well with their products. Basically they are screwing PC users with this deal, regardless of the discount given in this post.

      • Also curious about the price differential. Although not really pissed off about it (don't really want to neg ANYONE, and honestly not really sure if negging any posts here is really 'punishing' the right person) - just genuinely curious about what market forces / implementation sisues have motivated them to do this.

        • Not sure if this is the whole/real reason, but the AppSumo site says "Now you might be asking, why the difference in price? Now while both products are great (I personally use Camtasia for Mac), Camtasia Studio for PC has a bunch of extra features like quizzing, screendraw, and edit presets."

        • @mdsh: Still does no substantiate 300% difference in price..

        • @mdsh:

Should have mentioned, I did have a scan of the features list but didn't really see anything to warrant such a price difference - admittedly I'm not an avid user so likely I am missing subtleties, but not convinced that it explains the 3x price

      • Camtasia Studio 8 for Windows and Camtasia for Mac 2 do not have identical features. You can compare the differences here. I've used both and I much prefer the simplicity of the Mac version but there are times where I've had to switch between the two depending on the type of video I was creating.

That said, I somewhat agree with you about how they justify the massive difference in price.

        • Granted.. they wont be the same product and I've tried the latest Camtasia recently and it has really grown up since the early days. However, they should be able to market a cheaper capture only option as oppose to packaging everything in there including the video editors, filters etc. Basically selling the Mac equivalent on Windows for the same price with the current package being the premium product.

    • Yeh camstudio just isn't worth the effort. Mucked around occasionally trying to get it to work .. then eventually I use a professional program on a 30 day trial (lucky I almost never need this sort of thing and my PC gets a good reinstall yearly). I have used Camtasia Studio for mac and PC and it's well featured but expensive (shame one license can't be used on both platforms).

Thanks for pointing out Open Broadcaster I'll have a look at it.

I think this is still true for those that just need a basic recording you can use Quicktime http://osxdaily.com/2010/11/16/screen-recorder-mac/

Also (for non mac people) I haven't moved to windows 10 yet but I hear it has screen recording built in - http://winsupersite.com/windows-10/how-use-windows-10s-scree…

  • FYI

If you have an old Camtasia licence, you can upgrade (for a little cheaper than this price).
