    • Maybe you should've waited 6 months and saved $90? :\

      • 6 months of computer usage for 90 , thats not bad :)

  • can anyone click to buy?
i can't seem to put it in my shopping cart.

nvm: sold out at 3pm. :P

  • My local myer said they would price match - only got the XP version though. Still a bargain? Would there be any significant disadvantages with the XP version?

  • .

  • They won't price match if it's out of stock.

  • +1

didnt even ask aboutt that. Just agreed. The website doesnt say out of stock.

  • Is it really a 0.3MP webcam (ie: 300,000 pixels)
Or is that mistake in the SPECS listing and it's supposed to 1.3MP ?
Not that I plan to use it, but 300K pixels… how small is the image !!!

    • I prefer 0.3mp webcams over 1.3mp ones, as often they have better dynamic range and colour.

more mp isn't necessary for video chat!

  • Can a Mod change the title to say [Expired] or [Sold Out]?

  • great price! couldn't help myself .. bought one on impulse

  • +2

Got 2 from Myer for $299 on price match - didnt even get charged the postage. :)

    • yeah but XP =(

    • Thanks for getting one for me imp, perfect for my wife even with XP :)

    • which myer your went to, Imp? do you think i still can do it now ?

      • Fremantle, WA

      • Fremantle - They had another 3 left.

  • I tried to get OW to price match but they were basically sold out in Sydney.

  • Does anybody know another good deal for the 1001 or maybe even for the 1005? Thank you!

  • Student Win7 ? how do I get that free? I have the eepc 1000he- can i use Win7 on this?

    • 1000he will run Win 7. If you are a student, try seeing if your course allows you to join the MSDN. This will allow you to get access to Microsoft program downloads.

  • Did anyone get a 'Order Sent' notification yet? I'm still waiting on any update from DealsDirect. Order still in Packing/Pack and Dispatch stage.

    • I was in 'Approved' since the deal, but I've checked it this morning and I'm in 'Order Being Packed' now. The site's estimated time to send from dispatch is 2 business days. Just depends on how long it takes to apply masking tape to the box before those 2 business days. :P

    • Got mine already. Haven't had time to play with it. Only arrived before I left for work

      • Awesome. I can't wait to get rid of my Eee PC 701. I love it, but there comes a time…

      • WHOA that's fast. I ordered on Friday and it's not even shipped but yours already arrived. That's bloody fast.

  • My order is on Pack & Dispatch stage. I'm guessing it will take at least a day or two to get to Victoria from NSW after dispatch.

  • mine's the same, i received tax invoice on Friday 19th and today i checked, it is still packed and dispatch, order being packed… does that mean it hasn't left the factory yet?

  • Mine was pack and dispatch yesterday and is now shopping shipped 22/02/2010.

Gives a tracking number with auspost and its still in sydney.

  • Officeworks did a price match for me on the Sat morning (included delivery) but I got it for $293

    • I wish I bought from Officeworks as well. Only for the reason of getting it on the spot instead of waiting for delivery. The feeling sucks waiting for an item when some people have already received theirs.

  • Anyone else experience a very loud harddisk that keeps on searching despite no processes running?

    • I'll tell you when I actually receive it. Status on Deals Direct is still: Pack & Dispatch stage.

      • Same here… :'(

        • Mine as well. Must be some ultra high secure packing method or something. It was being packed since Monday. Send it already man!!!

          • @ragflan: No way dude. Mine received just plain cardboard box wrapped in Auspost plastic, no cushioning - anywhere! This is why I think my HDD is making the loud, intermittent noise. The unit is tossed around in the packaging without any protection.

Even my 4 yr old HDD doesn't have this problem.

            • @mr_asstight: I was just being sarcastic. But hey.. so there's no actual ASUS packaging like netbooks/notebooks usually have? Its in some random cardboard box?

              • @ragflan: I suspect that they took more orders than they had stock and probably had to get more from the distributor!

                • @shawn_low: Got a 'Sent' notification from DealsDirect today. I hope it arrives by Friday.

    • sorry it does not accepted for N280

      But still applyed $499's (N450 new mini10).
      it would be $399

  • wed 24th 1 pm checked dealsdirect account again, item still being pack&dispatch.. order being packed? wth.. took them 3 days just to pack?? should of gone to office work like some people in here :(

    • Yeah… my first time buying from this place.
Ordered and paid by CC at 6.30am Friday morning.
      4.38pm Wednesday… ORDER BEING PACKED.
If we ran our business this slow… we'd be gone by the end of the first week.
Still… it was cheap so I shouldn't complain too much I guess.

      • Yeah. I really hope they send it at least by Friday so I can use it by next week. The price is great but what's with the 3 day packing?

  • OK this netbook is driving me up the wall. The HDD ticks/clicks loudly every few seconds. Anyone found this with theirs?

I found other people to have problems with "ticking" sounds as well. It came as poorly packed as the reviewer described it.

    http://www.amazon.com/review/RC2NS9X3IT4OU/ref=cm_cr_pr_cmt?…

I wrote a previous review at 5 stars. However, after a hard drive issue the first week of ownership I wanted to update my review with a 2 star demotion. Don't get me wrong, this is an amazing netbook for the money. However, I am not as happy as I was when I bought the thing. When I opened the packing box when I got it I first noticed only 1 slightly filled with air "bubble bag thingie". The netbook box was sliding all over the place in the box. I thought "oh well, no biggie, they know what they're doing". Next after opening the sealed eee box and removing the 1000he, I noticed that the back cover was bowed up. Again I shrugged and pushed it back into place with hardly any pressure and thought "hmm, maybe just something at the factory". Then I unwrap the manual and it was creased like it had been opened. At this point I'm starting to get a little angry, but I'm pretty laid back. So I put the battery in and charge it all night and then write my 5 star review the next morning. I really do love this little machine! However, soon I started to notice a constant "ticking" sound every few seconds and then a very very slight "beep beep" sound (so low it's hardly audible). I realize that the hard drive is trying to "park" or do something. The ticking is about twice as loud as the normal hard drive noise. So I hit the internet. I see hdparm posts to quiet it, etc.. never tried them as I was getting really angry now after spending time installing my software, etc… And now I'm hearing a loud tick about twice a day. So I decide to contact Asus. I go to the site and follow their instructions. Looked at the forums, faqs, etc.. See on the forum that ticking could be imminent hard drive failure. That was almost the last straw. I then filled out the tech form on Asus, describing in detail my issue with the hard drive. The next day I get back a response (in broken english) regarding they are sorry about my trouble with my ram (what?!?!). Last straw there :P. So I used the "call me" feature in amazon. Got a rep who said that they will send me a replacement at no cost and that they will email me a return sticker for the exchange. That night I see the replacement order, but no email with sticker. The next morning I use the call feature again, this time they send me the email with the return authorization sticker. But I notice their "right to check for customer claimed damage and charge 15% restock fee". I'm thinking "great, somebody is not going to hear the ticks or something like that and I'm going to get hit with a 15% fee for this netbook that A) I am having my doubts was new to begin with B) Was packed really poorly and this probably caused the hard drive issue I was experiencing C)I was told would be "exchange at no cost to you". In fairness, if this new machine is fine and they don't charge me the 15% (which they shouldn't), Amazon did a really quick turn around and the replacement was free (sent the same fashion I paid for in my original order). So for now this is a 3 star based on my overall experiences, but my next review on my replacement may jump back up to 5 stars. I still think that this is the best of the netbook bunch. I just need to get one that works :P. We'll see..

    • Dude, relax. There is warranty on the machine. If it's damaged or has a problem that needs to be rectified, you'll be covered at no charged.

My last netbook from CoTD was packed in a similar fashion. The Asus box was tossed in a larger box with NO bubblewrap etc. Machine was fine.

It could be simply be a defective hard drive (could have been the packing, could have been damaged in transit etc). But warranty should cover it.

  • Got my netbook today. First netbook I've owned and it's awesome, it won't replace my desktop or laptop but it does its job as a netbook fine.

I read the above post and I put my ear right next to the netbook and I can hear the clicking noises of the hdd, but it's not as loud as the sound of my desktop or Dell XPS m1530 laptop, so it doesn't bother me at all.

    • Does it tick/click every few seconds though? Cause mine does =(

      • It ticks when the hdd light flickers but I can only hear it if I put my ear up against the netbook.
Maybe you have a faulty netbook? See if you can return it.

  • 24/02/10 11.30pm received an email from dealsdirect.. item has been shipped, hopefully i can get it by Friday.. finger's cross

    • Ditto. Email with tracking number sent to me. Probably takes two days to get from Sydney to Melbourne.

      • Yeah I doubt if mine will get here by Friday. I'm guessing Monday next week at the earliest. I checked the status and it's still in Sydney.

  • Mine was shipped Monday, any chance of arriving by friday?

  • Mine arrived this morning. Had to chase the postman down the road since he couldn't bother actually coming to the door to knock, just wanted to leave that note in the letterbox. How can a 9-5'er pick up a package if the Post Offices close so early?
Anyway, it's very nice. The wrapping isn't much though, just pink plastic. Everything's working though. Can't wait to get home and actually use it for something.

    • Mine arrived at work. Probably in the warehouse. Will report back when I get to turn it on.

      Update. Got it.

Packing was nonexistent. Dealsdirect basically plastic wrapped the whole Asus box in pink plastic.

Unfortunately, the Asus box isn't very sturdy. There is minimal protection of the netbook's top shell. The sides have some cardboard around it. The bottom is shielded by the layer containing the power brick and manual…BUT the top of the netbook is only protected by the thin cardboard of the box.

And it's thin. The box isn't double walled.

Win 7 booting now. Installing devices.

      Will report back soon.

So far, no HDD clicking. Fan's not even going.

  • Mine arrived on Wednesday, there isn't much packaging but it's not needed. Swapped 2gb ram from my 701 into it and working fine. There isn't a lot of bloatware on this, there's the annoying dock up the top and bodingo wifi, that's about it. I quite appreciate the trend micro anti-virus although I think I will replace it with Microsoft essentials when it expires.

Tips: Since only windows 7 starter edition is included, there are a few missing features. The most glaring one for me is background change. This is easily fixed with a freeware program called: Oceanis Change background.

Search and start menu is also slow, so I have replaced it with a freebie called 'everything' for search and 'launchy' for app launching. Ninite.com has a list of very useful freewares and can create a custom installer batch installer from a selection.

Problems: the hard drive clicks, not very loudly but it's distracting. Not enough for me to want to go to the hassles of returning it. Battery life claimed is 8.5 hours, windows meter says 6. Not a dealbreaker either, but does anyone have battery saving tips?

All in all, very happy with this machine and amazing what it can do for $299! Even runs photoshop quite well. Best of all, it's light, quite attractive bar the ugly EEE logo and long battery life.

  • By the way is everyone else's drive already partitioned into 2? Not complaining since it makes installing a second OS easier, but just wondering.

    • Yeah mine's partitioned too. Wasn't expecting it, but I guess it's a good way to keep the apps separate from the rest of the stuff.
I'm having trouble with my wireless dropping constantly, but that's fixable.
Battery life's amazing to me. Being able to take a laptop out for the day without the charger's a reassuring feeling.
Win 7 Starter is a lot more constricted than I thought, but then again, easily fixable. You would think that background changing wasn't an 'advanced feature', but ahh well.
Happy purchase. Hope y'all enjoys yours too.

      R.I.P. Eee PC 701 4G (2006-2010)

  • I picked this up from Officeworks for $299 after a bit of a hassle.

Went in on the Friday (19/2) morning to have a look, the guy said they could do it. Went back after work but was dealing with another guy after checking with his manager said that theycan't match it as its not identical (running XP not 7; despite the cheaper one having a newer OS) after saying that I wanted to speak to the manager as the previous guy has said it wasn't a problem, they said they'd match it but wouldn't do the 5%. So I ordered it and then had trouble with an STO (stock transfer order).

Long story short … they had to get it from interstate as there was no stock in SA. So after a fortnight and overnight TNT courier, and then almost had further trouble when I went to pick it up yesterday re the price matching.

I managed to get it, albeit without the 5% which I thought is still pretty good although the whole price matching thing is still painful.
