Samsung Galaxy Tab A 8.0" with S-Pen $301 @ The Good Guys

50

I just picked myself one of these second hand. Great little tablet. The resolution isn't great, but it's a good quality screen with good viewing angles and the resolution doesn't make that much of an issue.

The s-pen model has 2gig of ram v the 1.5gig in the standard models and the s-pen is a nice little addition. The tablet is the perfect size for drawing and note taking.

The standard one is being sold by them for $2 less! But I know the standard one has sold for around $269 at Dick Smith and JB Hifi!

Get on it!

At 1024 x 768, I'd go so far to say the resolution is terrible. Better off spending more on something else.

Not everyone needs a stupidly high res screen. Yes it's low res, but that means that you're not working the processor as hard. The main issues i have with the lower res is not showing a HD movie in native res and when drawing/writing in one note, you can't zoom out as far. Oh and email misses out on preview column.

But I'd be careful to be so judgemental of the resolution. The 4:3 aspect ration makes it very nice for general browsing and note taking.

      • Processor is not being worked as hard, but as a result they put in a cheaper processor, so it's still being worked hard.

Pay a little bit more, get a Xiaomi Mi Pad 2 64GB. Much sharper display, and better processor, premium look.

    • I have compared this screen and the screen on the Tab S2 in a store. Without looking carefully, I can't tell the difference. I'm no screen aficionado, though.

Well yeah, one is their budget line the other is their flagship.

Though imo, S1 is the better tablet.

      • The s2 screen is more vibrant. And I'm sure if I cared to look sharper.

But I beg to differ performance wise on day to day tasks, is very well optimised, and whist not the greatest processor, still very capable.

And for the price I got it for used ($200) I have no regrets.

Totally agree with @matthewperk on performance of Tab A. Very capable for the price. No noticeable lag.

  • Probably worth mentioning this is the 8.0 inch model….

    • good call. I think someone has already fixed it.

  • is this better than the Tab S 8.4? or is it just for different thigns? (4:3 low res screen and stylus more for writing/work than media consumption?

Heck no. The tab s slays this.

Kinda different things, I guess. The Tab S is vastly better in every way except for the stylus, and maybe the aspect ratio depending on your views.

      • Thanks, I guess the tab S is still a decent device then apart from the older processor (roughly snapdragon 800 equivalent) and no stylus, I suppose the Tab S2 is the upgrade direct comparison rather than the Tab A.

        • Yep the Tab S2 is the upgrade to the Tab S. Interestingly they've gone to a 4:3 ration, which I'm a big fan of - but with a much higher res screen than the Tab A, and with AMOLED rather than a TN.

    • power wise, sound and screen wise, no the Tab S 8.4 is an overall better tablet. The Tab A does have slightly better battery life though, and the 4:3 aspect ratio is preferable for some. But yeh for media consumption the 16:10 of the 8.4 is better.

The Tab A does have a stylus that some might appreciate though.

      • S2 is 4:3

hope you remember the click and collect credit!

  • Its same price over at Dick Smith at the moment:

    http://www.dicksmith.com.au/tablets-accessories/samsung-gala…

Was even better the other day with $45 off this price.. to $269

    Not really a deal..

    • If they repeat that price in the future it isn't as good a deal. But I doubt they'll do as good a repeat performance anytime soon

      • Its a better deal if you join up to their Mates rates program by $10

Never say never.. and who knows when the next $20/$50/$100 discount is going to be from a struggling company (DSE)?
