Why does this app only work on Gen4?
Doesn't it just display various test colours/patterns with instructions for users to adjust the relevant settings?

It's a tvOS app and only the Gen4 AppleTV has the App Store.

THX has an iOS app to calibrate your TV. You can use a hdmi adapter or you could airplay it to your ATV to your TV. Not sure the quality if you airplay it but should be fine as it's all static images. If you also wanted to, you can download the test images off the internet and play them direct on your ATV. There's one section where you have to use the iphone camera and point it at your tv to calibrate colour/hue/tint iirc.

I think it's free (could have been limited) but all I see is +Download and not the price:

BTW, anyone know if it's possible to access the tvOS app store using a browser? I want to check out what's available before I make up my mind on buying an ATV. And would be nice to pre-download these types of apps.

      • @obake Thanks for your comments

The THX app has a few drawbacks, namely requires you to have an iPod or iPhone to push the calibration test patterns to your Apple TV. Arguably you also lose some image quality by doing it this way.

Calibr8 is completely self contained and delivers both instructions and professional-grade test patterns consistent with the Apple TV experience. Go on, have a go and let us know what you reckon :-)

Yep, you can search tvOS Apps through iTunes app. It's a rather fragmented experience at the moment and hopefully will improve in time.

        • "Yep, you can search tvOS Apps through iTunes app"

I would question that. I tried searching for Calibr8 in the Australian appstore on an iPad (fully updated) and in the US appstore on iTunes (v. 12.1.2.27) for Windows. Neither found your app.

        • @ob4389745:

I'm mistaken, tvOS apps are presently only discoverable through the tvOS App Store which is available through the device. Somebody mentioned it could be done through iTunes app but I should've verified that rumour before posting. Sorry for confusion.

I wasn't trying to discourage people from purchasing/downloading your app. I was just giving people without a new Gen4 ATV (systmworks?) another option. Sorry if it came across like a negative comment.

        • @Obake: No worries at all, actually it's ironic that you brought it up because I also looked into the THX app when I first purchased the Apple TV… but found it was too complicated and didn't offer a very good experience on the device - this is what prompted us to create the app specific to the Apple TV. Like most things, it will suit some and not others :-)

Did you see the Apple TV deal on Kogan ($229 for 32 GB model shipped)? Perfect time to snap one up hehe
