Motorola Moto G 2nd Gen - Unlocked - $139 (Was $269) @ Dick Smith

980

Just popped into Dick Smiths, and saw this on special. Thought it was a pretty good deal and will be a spare phone. Prices online seem to still be hovering around the $170 to $200 plus mark. Didn't appear on Dick Smith website as I think it would be a clearance model now. Not sure on store stocks but there was only one left after I bought.

Not the latest or greatest, but a great alternative to the cheap android phones out there.

great phone … if the ram werent 1GB

  • -2

even at 139 it aint much of deal given the spec, you can buy typical octo core 3gb ram FHD china phones

    • +12

I've had my fair share of cheap Chinese no name phones and as we all know, specs don't always seem to be what they say they are. At least at this price you get local warranty and a reputable name.

      • +10

get a Xiaomi for ~200 AUD and you wont regret it

        • What model and from where?

        • @Zylam Marex:
A Redmi Note 2 Prime, or a Redmi Note 3

        • How do you find their own UI though?

        • +1

Not really sure where you are finding a Redmi Note 3 for $139, kind of makes your point a bit useless when the phones >$100 more.

        • @velcrochicken: redmi note 2 is 200 AUD delivered and redmi note 3 is 240 AUD…. not at all pointless

        • +1

It's pointless for someone with a budget of only $139. Yes if you're willing to spend 50% extra on any product you can get something better. However many people can't afford to increase their budges by 50%, and have to get the best they can afford.

        • @Makoto:
You aren't comparing an equivalent priced item so yes its pointless.

Why not compare it to an iPhone 6 or LG G4 if you aren't comparing to phones the same price.

        • +1

          @Makoto:

where can i get redmi 3 for $240

        • the stock android UI is just nice though. I haven't seen anything by any manufacturer that looks and feels as nice.

        • -1

@bti_jet: bang good has it on sale and with your coupons comes in at 240 AUD delivered

        • @Makoto:

          which code?

xmas code comes to $275 AUD

        • @Makoto:

how do we get this to come in at $240 delivered?? ??

    • +1

For the peace of mind of a local warranty and the usual consumer protections I'd rather spend a few dollars more to buy legit Australian stock than questionable Chinese gizmos.

    • For that price and being a google handset is good, vanilla Android and updates that I dare say the chines handsets will struggle to get 1 update rolled out.

      • +1

Google doesn't own Motorola anymore. The new Moto E 2015 isn't going to get an update and it's not even a year old. At least with Xiaomi you know you'll be getting them.

        • I have had two updates on my Moto G 2nd Gen since I bought it at the beginning of this year. The last one just a few weeks ago.

        • +1

@BonsaiBill: I'm aware. I'm just saying that Lenovo probably won't support it for long.

  • +2

Good price if you don't care about 4G. Still a solid reliable phone.

    • It is a really good phone for the price, especially the screen, but it's interesting how much it lags compared to my girlfriend's N4. I'll go more high end in future if I can afford it at the time.

  • +2

Clearance model. Store showing the most stock in NSW is Move - Burwood with 3 (probably 2 + display) and everyone else is 2 or less.

Would personally suggest either buying one today with the 10% off mates rates, or not bothering.

    • how do you access the 10% off mates rates? cant find the deal

      • Family & Friends (Sat/Sun)

    • Is there any stock interstate, i.e in WA? thanks in advance

      • +3

I'll check national stock for big deals, it's too much effort for small stuff.
Retail stores can only see regional stock.

        Sorry!

  • The 1GB of RAM wouldn't bother me… If this had 4G. But it looks like 3G only. Ho hum!

    • My moto g 1st gen has H+ and that seems pretty quick, is that the same as 4g, mind my ignorance regarding mobile network speeds.

      • no, thats 3G. 4g is many times faster (maybe 1000%) i think 3 g is around 1mb/s 4g is 100 or more.

        • Oh damn, never even noticed, my phone tends to stream HD YouTube fine and I never tend to do big downloads due to low limits.

        • +3

3g is fast enough for 99% of users

"3G data rates have progressively moved upward in theoretical maximums of 384kbps, 3.6Mbps, 7.2Mbps, 14.4Mbps, 21Mps and 42Mbps and (not yet implemented – 84Mbps) using HSPA and HSPA+ technology."

        • +1

3G is typically 3mb/s - 7mb/s. 4G is faster than that of course. For most people, 3G is fine.

  • -8

I honestly don't understand why people think it's a great phone.

I was being a cheap ass and bought one for my wife, the 8GB internal storage (note, only around 5GB with the Android OS) without the ability of expanding only putting me on the agony providing technical support until I bought her another phone which is way better.

    • +6

I don't know if you're comparing the right phone, but this phone has expandable memory with SD card as per specs.

      • +3

Even with sd card, normal users will find the phone very limiting, as soon as you install about 10 apps it fills up and sd card is next to useless because moving these apps to sd card require a bit of work. I have a 16gb and found myself resorting to link2sd, my apps are just daily apps like gumtree, banking and not a single game in there. The bunch of bloatware created by google already takes a fair share of the storage space

        • +1

I have this phone and started getting insufficient storage errors, but I count 90 apps in the menu now. Clearing the cache helps.

        • +1

There is an app called APP2SD or something similar. Makes the process seamless. I have this phone (4g) and whilst I have had problems with it (dropping it), its a cracking phone and was my first entry into the android os and would highly recommend it.

    • +12

      "without the ability of expanding"

The MotoG 2nd Gen has a MicroSD card slot for expanding storage. I suggest your wife goes to someone more competent for future technical support.

      • Now come to think if it I think it was the 1st gen. Every time I see moto G I lost my temper I guess.

And save the personal attack to yourself.

    • -3

I agree, this phone is unusable with 8gb internal. I install around 10 apps (not even big ones) before it runs out of internal space. It's slow and crashes with too many tabs open on chrome.

This phone is the reason why I swore to never buy another budget phone.

      • +4

        Rubbish about it being unusable.
I have multiple apps on mine and no problems. It has never crashed.

I suspect your story is BS or you're using buggy apps.

        • +1

I've never owned or used this phone, but I've used worse specs Android phones than this with only 4gb of storage, and still be able to install large games like gta sa and play them.

If this phone gets marshmallow then you can throw a 128gb sd card in it and install all the apps you want.

    • another phone which is way better

      Let me guess, an iPhone?

    • +1

As an owner of this phone, I agree. Drove me nuts. Then it developed a battery draining issue..wouldn't last 6 hours. Spend $100 more and thank me later

  • +12

DO NOT BUY THIS PHONE !!!
I'm currently using it. If you have bought it, please do NOT update it to Android 5.0 lollipop. This phone will slow down to unusable speed after updating it to Android 5.0. Even opening Facebook would take at least 10 seconds. Unless Motorola update the software to 5.1 or you want to flash a new ROM in it. I cannot be bothered.

    • +3

I must agree. I bought this phone and found the performance pretty poor, even for the price.

    • +2

Yep, I'm in the same boat. Had it for about 6 months and although it was very fast at the start, it very quickly slowed down. This could be directly as a consequence of the 1GB of ram… The storage isn't an issue as there is an SD slot.

Upgraded to an LG Flex 2 $360, much faster and doesn't have the ridiculous bottleneck of 1GB ram.

    • +8

Try resetting your cache, you wont lose your setting and apps.

      http://allaboutmotog.com/how-to-clear-cache-partition-on-mot…

      • +2

I agree. I have a 1st gen Nexus 7 that ran like a dog after upgrading to Lollipop. After doing a cache reset, it's much more usable.

    • Yes, definitely. Only way to solve is to restart the phone.

After flashing a 5.1 ROM it is much better and no restart is required etc. but for obvious reasons, this path isn't for everyone.

    • -1

Are you the bargain police? OP posted this to advise people of the savings to be had compared to its' original price. I've had one for 6 months and bought another today just because you said not to. I didn't pay any heed to your Ill informed advice.

    • Not sure whether this would help, but many people do recommend complete reset of the phone after a major update in general (Not specifically for this one, but for Android phones in general). It does get rid of potential problems with left over junk. From KitKat to Lollipop, I think a lot has been changed, so it wouldn't hurt at least.

Another candidate for the performance issue might be Google's mess up with Lollipop (I think the fix was on 5.1.1.), if that is the case it wouldn't help that much. Though I think Google's mess up with Lollipop can be alleviated with XDA's fix on the issue?

  • Great value if you want a dual sim phone. I've had mine for a year and have no intention of upgrading it yet.

  • Any stock in WA?

  • if this is 3g only i'd think again

i have the 4g version and its an ok phone, even on the latest google release but i'm guessing 4.5" is pretty old fashioned now

    • +2

      It's 5" not 4.5"

  • +1

I got the 3rd gen, 2Gb Ram , 16G; quite useable, but put in an extra 16G of microsSD , mainly for storing photos etc. (paid $268, awhile back)

    • 20% ebay discount I take it?

  • Huawei G6 was also $139 yesterday, Vodafone locked though, but cheap to unlock.
    Which one to buy ?

    • Personal preference I guess.
This Moto G does have a bigger screen and better screen resolution if that's important to you.

  • +1

Using the zte fit and for a 1.3 quade core, 1gb ram it does a very good job.

Out of the 9gb I had 4.8gb to use which is good enough.

    • +2

Yeah the mtk soc is a bit better. It's a pity the camera is so crap though.

      • +2

ZTE Fit after re partition is smooth as butter, but must agree. The camera not so good.
Well, what I could expect from $49.50 ? LOL …at least it's 4G and big battery

        • Sure is, smooth as silk even with 1gb ram.

And I picked up mine for $49.50 at office works…. Had to do the partition business but it was old stock.

        • +1

          @Hotkolbas:

          smooth as silk

Just reminded me of Thai Airways then…

        • @KaptnKaos: and the thai of some ladyboy?

      • By the tests I'm surprised the mtk soc is better in everything.

The battery life is decent but I would live to double up some batteries for the extra power

        • +1

It really amazed me how great the performance of the fit is. Tasks such as browsing fly, and you can have 5 or 6 tabs open and when you switch back to another tab it still doesn't reload. It makes excellent use of its 1gb of ram. It beats my lumia 930.:(

  • The Buzz / ZTE fit and Sony E4G are surely better for much less.

    • Ive used the Buzz and Fit. The Moto G is better subjectively. I haven't tried the Sony.
The Moto G has gorilla glass which is much nicer.

  • +1

Vodafone Huawei Mate 7 is only $145 if you can find stock. Much better phone and it's actually unlocked.

  • How did you manage to get it that cheap? Was it during a sale period?

  • -1

How did I know mobiles would get cheaper and cheaper! Aren't I just the genius! LOL but yeah you can't expect too much RAM at that price anyways. I don't know how these mobile phone companies got away with putting the price at over $500 for phones like these a couple of years ago!…?? I guess it all depends on how much people were willing to fork out their hard-earned dollars for these disposable gadgets

    • +1

Technology advancement and the fact that some of the technology has been around for so long affects cost.

HD LCD would be dirt cheap right now (at least compared to even 2 years ago), due to it phasing out and the fact that it's been a long time since HD LCD has been around (i.e. the companies would've recouped fixed cost associated with it and many companies would be able to produce it). RAM technology has advanced a lot as well as SoC department. Cost associated with it got reduced, same or similar reason as above.

Also, another factor you have to consider is, was it possible to use it few years ago? Smaller finFET allows higher density chips to be used. Better technology means the device can actually run the said components without melting (in both battery department and temperature department). Simply due to better technology usually includes better power efficiency as well.

The phone's succeeded by newer model, so I assume the price is also due to the retailers wanting to get rid of old stock.

  • I have this phone, originally from Dick Smith. It is certainly a solid performer and a good option at this price if you can't afford more, but I do find it a bit frustrating at times, and the 8 GB internal storage is an issue.

    • If you have an sd card, doesn't that alleviate the storage issue?

      • not really. some apps can't be installed on the external sd card and some apps keep part of them in the internal memory. I have this phone and 8 GB internal storage is an issue.

      • Most (but not all) apps can't be moved to the SD card on anything prior to Android 6, unless users go to the extent of rooting their phones. I do believe that Android 6 will alleviate this issue, by allowing users to combine internal storage and external storage to the point that the phone will see both as one single storage 'block'.

  • +1

I got this phone for my dad in February. Motorola has certainly dropped the ball on updates on it though. It is still stuck on Android 5.0.2.

  • +1

    Its sold out already.

    • +1

      How'd you know?

      • i checked at the dicksmith outlets at emporium and the one at bourke/swanston.

  • +1

Lag is horrible with this phone. Definitely would get a Chinese phone over this

  • My opinion is that buying any phone with 8GB internal memory and having Android Lollipop installed will leave you on the margin of using up all your storage with just 9-10 apps.

  • +1

convinced the wife to put down her windows phone and buy this, then started glitching and freezing from the lock screen after the 2nd day. Took it back for a refund, buyer beware. Google will bring up many other quality issues.

  • +2

Yeh I must say mine is almost a year old and is lagging (after last update). Have to say the reception is pretty poor to. Also touted as a dual 3G SIM phone which was a major factor to me buying it. You can not however use both Sims as 3G concurrently. So whichever SIM you have set to use your data is the one that gets 3G, the other gets 2G.

I found out that there are no actual Dual 3G SIM (active) phones so i couldn't have bought anything else but to market it as Dual 3G SIM for the unaware is false.

  • Does anyone know if dick Smith do in store transfer?

  • I can't pick an item up till weekend which is 40 min drive.

    • hi, can you please let me know if it's still available in any store at mebourne?

  • hi, can you please let me know if it's still available in any store at mebourne?

  • Probably a bit late. Anybody know if there are any left in Sydney? Thanks!

  • Not sure if this is a store special, because saw 1 in Melbourne store but was $189

  • Now available online. $132 + delivery.
    Cheaper than before :)
